Greedy Bands and their Tickets

timewaster  said about 2 years ago  or at  4:20PM on Tuesday, November 10 2009 in chat

Inspired by the thread about Them Crooked Vultures...

This thread is about bands who are charging WAY TOO MUCH MONEY for their headline gigs.

It seems that these days, the average teenager virtually has to take out a mortgage to see their favourite international band. Even Australian acts are charging as much money as tickets to the Australian Opera!

As PT Barnum said, there's a sucker born every minute.

Discuss.

don't blame the bands, blame the promoters. well, that's what i reckon, if TCV are only charging 30 pounds for shows in england.

Really? I just checked Ticketek for tomorrow night's show:
Opera Australia - Aida
the Arts Centre, State Theatre, Melbourne, VIC
Wed 11 Nov 2009, 07:30 PM
Description BALCNY C 8 - 9
PENSIONER/FULL TIME STUDENT Ticket Price AU $92.00
ADULT RATE Ticket Price AU $102.00

What Australian bands are charging $102.00?

kellyclarksonisgold  said about 2 years ago:

I am. 102 dollars to see me at the old bar.

Mo  said about 2 years ago:

i paid 130 bucks for iron maiden - but for that show i would have happily paid twice as much

Goal attack  said about 2 years ago:

Blame Muscles and Tim Rogers.

kellyclarksonisgold  said about 2 years ago:

if I ever do a show at the tote I'll charge 145 dollars. think I'm joking? I aint.

timewaster  said about 2 years ago:

''Supply and demand''. Ha ha. Yes, but elementary economics does not excuse this heinous practice. If only the concert industry were properly covered by the Fair Trading Act....

kellyclarksonisgold  said about 2 years ago:

how much does genius cost though? a good rock show is a life long xperience.

timewaster  said about 2 years ago:

$130 for Iron Maiden or AC/DC is reasonable. They have an enormous show, special effects and they're the all-time great bands.

Now Lily Allen is charging $90 - $100 for her tickets. She's not a living legend and she wouldn't have exploding cannons either.

Goal attack  said about 2 years ago:

PM Eddie Vedder, he'll sympathise.

outerspacextrapnel  said about 2 years ago:

Of course it's unfair, but what are you going to do?

Timmmay  said about 2 years ago:

Well if they're not making any money from CD sales and people are willing to pay for it why not?

outerspacextrapnel  said about 2 years ago:

SOOK ABOUT IT ON THE INTERNET WHY DON'T YOU?

timewaster  said about 2 years ago:

Ha ha ha ha ha ha.

That's the reaction that I expected.

djblxs  said about 2 years ago:

I guess that's the thing, if artists aren't making money from record sales anymore they have to try and make a living somehow.

timewaster  said about 2 years ago:

Ha ha ha.

I'm not referring to struggling artists 'trying to make a living'.

I'm referring to the Lily Allens, charging $100 from the teenage girls who want tickets to her gig. I'm surprised that so many music fans happily accept this naked greed.

Someone said that 'genius' justifies high-ticket prices. Of come on. A lot of people consider Rowland S. Howard a genius. But the tickets to his gigs are cheap (and they feature two fifths of the Birthday Party).

Nope. It's just people getting ripped off. It's akin to a cartel.

Who's Matt Church? I don't read his threads.

I don't do bonelesses - I'm not a fossil from the 80s! Selling a kid some shoes is not a big deal.

Anyway, this thread is NOT about me. It's getting way off-topic. It's meant to be about the bands who are ripping off their fans.

Isn't Ladyhawke charging $50 - $60 for her Enmore show? Fucking gross.

I'm still waiting to find out who this refers to.

John Farnham?

tangy_zizzle  said about 2 years ago:

Farnham's recent tour was $100, and that's the cheap seats at the back.

How much is your book gonna RRP for?

Just a general question. Haven't read a ripper in a while.

slothman  said about 2 years ago:

remember how expensive tickets to see eminem lip-synch were? paid about half as much at the same time (2001-2002) to see Fantomas at the old Palace in St. Kilda (approx. $60). Earlier this year it was about $80 to see them play support for Serj at the new Palace (in the city). I'd say that seems like just about the industry baseline of inflation (not involved in the industry at all).

that being said i've felt pretty dirty about how much i agreed to spend to see TCV after hearing only 30 seconds of their music. at festering hall no less.....

timewaster  said about 2 years ago:

Nah, I'm not answering questions about my book , blah blah blah...this thread is about the bands who are charging $40 too much for their tickets. Keep the mud-slinging to that topic.

shaun  said about 2 years ago:

I dunno, I never pay for three-digit tickets cause I rarely have any desire to see the larger bands (Fleetwood Mac being a massive exception, but the tickets are too expensive). Maybe it's a trend that will continue, seeing as bands aren't making as much money on records anymore?

timewaster  said about 2 years ago:

Yeah, but there must be a limit.

So record sales are down. Boo hoo. That is not a valid excuse for bands to rip off their fans. If you want to make money, then get a real job instead of being in a band.

I agree with this, in theory.

However, and I do apologise for harping on it, but when the publisher approached you - was your first thought 'fuck this, I'm going to hawk chapbooks on a street corner. no fucking publisher is sinking their grotty mits into my art.'

I highly doubt it.

If you wanted to make money, you should get a real job. Investment Banker. As it turns out, you're probably going to be able to do something you love and make some money. I'm not going to buy your book but, as someone said above, but whoever does has made it their prerogative to give away their money for whatever fills the shelves between Angels and Demons and Marley and Me. Or if they wanna see Britney.
I may be out of touch though, I thought Joanna Newsom at $50 was incredibly cheap. I'm used to paying a lot more to see bands. Even shitty ones.

shaun  said about 2 years ago:

Well yeah, $50 is cheap. I'm willing to pay anything up to about $70 for a touring artist, depending on stage show etc.

Look at Flaming Lips set up. Massive. Tickets were a little less than $80! How does Lily Allen justify her stage show/ticket price?

fishandfingerpie  said about 2 years ago:

Norgs.

__v  said about 2 years ago:

I seem to recall that Radiohead at the Entertainment Centre last tour was very reasonable compared to other shows at that venue. $80 or so? A few years ago admittedly, but at a time when top-flight internationals had begun to regularly charge over $100.

__v  said about 2 years ago:

Who is this Lily Allen anyway?

Jsweat  said about 2 years ago:

The tickets for TCV haven't sold out - wouldn't mind betting that they would have by now if they were only charging $80 - $90.

Just saw on the Festival Hall website that Short Stack are charging $50 - $65 for tickets... Now THAT is a rip-off.

Not sure, but I saw her performing on Lost Boy's broadcast on Pirate Net on Neighbours this week
She was alright (still)
