Temperatures to plummet as Indian summer ends
Megan Levy
April 8, 2011 - 12:24PM

Get outside and enjoy the summery spell while it lasts - the top temperature is expected to plummet by 10 degrees over the weekend as a blast of winter arrives.

Melbourne is in the midst of a pleasant four-day warm spell, with the mercury creeping over 23 degrees each of those days and reaching as high as 26 today.

The weather is expected to hit 27 degrees tomorrow, before wet and cold conditions roll in late tomorrow afternoon and evening.

On Sunday, the Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting a chilly top of just 17 degrees with scattered showers, which are expected to persist until Wednesday.

Weatherzone meteorologist Brett Dutschke said this could be the city’s last prolonged warm burst for the season.

‘‘Melbourne is in a four-day warm spell that is almost certainly not going to be repeated until spring,’’ he said.

Bureau forecaster Peter Newham said the past four days had been several degrees above the average maximum April temperature of 20.3 degrees.

‘‘Obviously it has been quite a good spell of warm weather,’’ he said.

‘‘It’s normal at this time of year through autumn to have these settled spells, these slow-moving highs where it’s quite pleasant.

‘‘Whether or not we can get into the mid to high-20s for a run of days again [this autumn], that could be hard.

‘‘Through this period the sun quite quickly gets lower in the sky and the days get shorter but ... we do have some computer models that go out 10 days and they suggest we could get back into some slightly warmer air by next weekend.’’

Hi Winter!

And - snap - winter's here
Megan Levy
June 1, 2011 - 8:45AM

Welcome to winter. Melbourne ushered in the new season today with its coldest morning in almost a year, while other parts of Victoria shivered through sub-zero temperatures.

Remarkably, the mercury dropped to a low of 3.4 degrees in the city at dawn, almost a degree colder than at the Victorian snow resort of Falls Creek at the same time.

Getting out from under the doona was toughest at Laverton, which hit a low of -1 just after 7am, while the appropriately named Coldstream touched -0.8 degrees just before 7am.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Peter Blake said the coldest place in Victoria this morning was Ballarat, which hit a low of -2.8 degrees just after 7am.

Mr Blake said the mercury dropped to a low of 3.4 degrees in central Melbourne at 6.40am - the coldest morning in the city since July 20 last year.

But he said the day was expected heat up, with a sunny 19 for the city this afternoon. Ballarat is expected to reach 15 degrees.

Mr Blake said today's chill would be ''the last of the cold days'' for a spell.

''We're going for a top of 19 [in the city] today so the afternoon will be quiet a bit different,'' he said. '' And tomorrow morning should be warmer because we're going to have a bit of northerly wind around.

''With still conditions and clear skies you end up with a cold morning. Tomorrow we're going to have a bit of wind around so it keeps the temperature up as well.''

He said minimum temperatures were expected to be much warmer this week.

''That's the last of the really cold mornings until mid next week when we get down to forecasting a minimum of six degrees on Tuesday, so the mornings will be better from here on,'' he said.
