What's wrong with the Stag? It's large capacity, good stage and sound and most importantly available right now! If we waited for another venue we couldn't do this for a fortnight to a month? Maybe we shouldn't bother if that is the reaction of staff.

Equally divided or needs based divided amongst the ten or so people most reliant for income on the place? I'm not trying to save the fucking world here. Just think that the staff can lay a pretty large claim on all this love for the hoey. If you care about the hoey you should care about their staff who are getting fucked over right now.

It was bought well over 18 months ago and still nothing has happened with it. Sucks.

I've been hearing some industry talk about this and the story about the Hoey closure is that no one from the Sydney City Council has anything to do with the closure of the pub. There was pressure from the Surry Hills Local Area Command but at no time has the Hoey been issued with notices from either the council or the cops. There was a noise complaint recently but this was dealt with and solved. It's not as simple as blaming Clover Moore - both the council and the state government have done more than enough in the last eighteen months to make Sydney a more music-friendly town. I suspect that it's as simple as the Hoey not turning over enough money to keep operating. Any venue that concentrates solely on music is always going to be pushing the barrow uphill. Music is not necessarily a profitable exercise, and while there might be one or two nights a week when the Hoey is jammed full of drinkers, that doesn't always tip over into profit when the other five/six nights of the week are poorly attended. It's too easy to just blame the council, and the security issue is a furphy. The venue staff are more than capable of policing the joint and taking care of troublemakers, of which there are few. I can't remember the last time I saw a punch-up at the Hoey! And I've been seeing bands there since 1987. And it closed down during the 90s as well. I think the Hoey will persist, and I hope for the sake of the staff that they get back up and running soon because the truth of what is actually happening here doesn't change the fact that people's jobs and livelihoods are being affected negatively.
