Mmmm, poetic.
I like what I've heard. I'm still shocked that someone who is so heavily influenced by Goran Bregovic and Kocani Orkestar is causing such a stir in indie music circles.
Is that him Glassy?

It's because he is young and pretty and his album was produced by someone who was once in Neutral Milk Hotel.
The music is good though.
yah, i likey
my workmate has just come back from beirut too.

Is it really, entirely impossible that it's simply because the music is good?
I didn't know a single thing about him until after I had decided I liked it.
It's definitely the reason why many people are liking it, but buddychizeleski's point is reasonable. Plenty of other people have made music just like this before, what is it about him that is making the indie kids love it? He's american, he's young, he's cute and he has good songs. If he was from Yugoslavia and singing in their language with the same songs, he'd probably be busking as a traditional music player in his local shopping centre. Music like this has never really been popular in indie circles before to my knowledge, he has just made it accessible for people who aren't into world music. I'm not trying to discredit him at all by saying this.
I love the album and was supposed to see/photograph him and his band last week but got to the venue late due to a scheduling fuckup. RAGH!
While where on the topic, if you dig Beirut I encourage picking up a copy of Ederlezi by Goran Bregovic. Some amazing music to be heard. Man from Reno featuring Scott Walker is on there.
got the new ep, its good

*How is there not already a thread about Beirut? *
I was thinking the same thing just the other day PG. 2nd question- how can a 19 year old have such an amazing crooner voice.
I thoroughly enjoy, but then again middle-eastern and gypsy stuff has always been my guilty world music pleasure.
New version out now through 4AD/Inertia with a bonus EP.
If you like Beirut, you might get into A Hawk and a Hacksaw . . . some of the musicians on Gulag Orkestar play on their latest album 'The Way the Wind Blows'. Great if you're into the more traditional euro folk stuff.
Was meant to see him supporting Calexico the other week, but one of the band was ill, so instead we got Hawk and a Hacksaw. There was one song played with the full band though, and that was pretty good. Very very random though, I'd be interested in hearing one of the albums.

The guy who produced the album and was in NMH is also in A Hawk and a Hacksaw.
When's someone gonna tour this guy already? Golden Plainssss?
ProDelgado, he's playing at the Luminaire on Sunday.
Gulag Orkestar is an awesome album, definitely a fave this year. A Hawk and a Hacksaw is brilliant too but I don't think the two go hand in hand. Beirut is more song orientated and not as rambunctious as a lot of AHaaH material.
sumptous new EP.
Rambunctious is certainly the word I'd use to describe the one song that they performed the other week.
I'm up at the top end of England, so no Luminaire gig for me...
Lumi is completely sold out.
Venue has a ceiling capacity of 275 - this number includes artists, barstaff, guest list, everything!
No way in...
There were about 7 of them onstage for the song before Calexico, so factor in staff and guestlist and industry people, you're not gonna be left with many tickets for punters...
