Replacing a pedal. Cheap plastic one. Anyone done this? Being that I found my bike on the street and it is a real piece of shit I can't see this being worth it.

tadatadatada  said about 2 years ago:

go find an abandoned bike with it's wheels missing chained to a pole and borrow the pedals off that. there's two size bolts, most bikes use the larger size, but some ultra cheap bmx's etc, use the smaller size.

louis  said about 2 years ago:

there's one on burke road in gardiner. been there for months.

andydepressant  said about 2 years ago:

Where's Gardiner?

cityofthechasch  said about 2 years ago:

louis  said about 2 years ago:

it's one of those funny not suburbs, between glen iris and camberwell. i used to see the bike from the 72 tram when i was staying at chez parents in glen iris and schlepping to work in hawthorn.

repost from another forum....

Hi Guys,
last night as I was riding into the city (thru Birrarung Marr) - I was jumped and attacked by a group of young males. they punched me off my bike, bottled my head - luckily i was wearing a helmet, and continued to kick and punch me on the ground for a few minutes. they have taken off with my ride..
If anybody around Melbourne see's a Black Fuji (track) frame, w, white velocity deep v rims, flat bar with black grips, black pake cranks, with mks pedals and clips, and Brooks leather saddle (seat - the b17), please if possible lock it up and contact me on 0449854895
I'm also going to be looking out for it on ebay, so if anybody see's it floating on there, flow me an email or message oliversellmers@bigpond.com
Now, I dont have a heap of money, but if anybody does find it, ill be more than happy to do some commercial photography shots of their ride or anything they may need, in my studio or out and about..
Thanks heaps
Ollie

Damn that's rough. I'll keep an eye out but that sort of bike is a dime a dozen at the moment.

tadatadatada  said about 2 years ago:

i think the most important thing is to avoid the bike paths on both sides of the yarra near fed square after dark. another guy a couple of weeks ago had a man pull a knife on him near the rowing sheds and try and steal his bike but he managed to ride away.

I got mine back with cleats on the w/e, fucking amazing!!! 30km/h up Redfern Rd, keeping up with traffic. Never going back.

A question for the bike heroes... Planning on picking up a road bike for weekends/trips to the supermarket/etc - does it really matter what type of bike I pick up? Or will most adequately cover my needs?

Hoping to spend as little as possible (less than $1k all up including accessories) - any suggestions?

littlesmoke  said about 2 years ago:

Get a commuter bike/flat bar road bike...more comfortable to ride than a true ''road bike'' if you're not after it for sport/racing. $1000 will be plenty for a reasonable one...just go see a couple of bike shops & talk to them about what you need.

I'm about to buy myself a Giant Trinity Advanced 1 time trial bike.....verrrrrrry sexy.

giant

bungle  said about 2 years ago:

you'd be able to pick up a real nice commuter for a grand.

go to some shops as littlesmoke suggested and get a feel for what's on offer.

Modi  said about 2 years ago:

stever  said about 2 years ago:

congrats l smoke!

haven't been riding as much this month; pushed 1450ks over july but i'm at about half that for august. work/life balance is bumming me out (but at least i'm getting shifts this month)

said shifts are going to fund a new frameset for my old tarck parts

littlesmoke  said about 2 years ago:

thanks stever. I've not ridden at all for weeks....& am now 10kg heavier than when I did half ironman back in February. Oops. I blame breweries for making beer so damn nice....& the entire nation of France for making food so tasty.

I already have gaiters, many months spent in the SW Tassie mud piles convinced me of their genius.

I want those wetsuit material shoe covers, or If I can steal some wetsuit material I'll make my own.

noneabove  said about 1 year ago:

I thought wetsuits trapped the water inside them?

Hellzapoppin  said about 1 year ago:

Fucks me, I hate the surf.

Hellzapoppin  said about 1 year ago:

Polychloroprene is what I need it seems. Surely they have some at Bunnings I can pocket.

noneabove  said about 1 year ago:

Ah, I see. Pretty sure wetsuits are made from polystyrene. That'd be where you got confused.

Hellzapoppin  said about 1 year ago:

I just noticed my new tube has gone flat..that's three in three days.. time to pull the wheel apart I guess... grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

noneabove  said about 1 year ago:

Maybe you should fill the tube with polystyrene?

Hellzapoppin  said about 1 year ago:

Maybe I can build a wheel out of it!

noneabove  said about 1 year ago:

Dude, that would be sweet.

Hellzapoppin  said about 1 year ago:

sweet ridin'

CryMeARiver  said about 1 year ago:

Had a great ride to and from work today, it's not too often I get the chance any more. Bought myself some sweet new tires which were stupidly expensive but damn do they make my ride enjoyable.

noneabove  said about 1 year ago:

I hope those are made from mock gators, CryMe. Like, seitan or tofu or something.

CryMeARiver  said about 1 year ago:

They may contain traces of nuts.

noneabove  said about 1 year ago:

That's fine as long as they're not peanuts.

Million-dollar fines to put the brakes on bikes

AFTER thick-rimmed glasses, a ''fixie'' bike is the hipster's ultimate accessory. With sleek lines, retro colours, no gears and often no brakes, they are the vehicle of choice for inner Melbourne's funky ''Fitzroyal'' set.
But now the feds are trying to cramp their style. Australia's consumer watchdog is threatening bike shops with fines of more than $1 million for selling brakeless fixed-wheel bikes.
Bikes must be sold with front and rear brakes, but the pedals on a fixed-wheel bike move when the wheels do, so skilled riders tend to ditch formal brakes and stop by resisting against the pedals, or turning into a skid.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has already taken action against a wholesaler for distributing the ''Surly Steamroller'' without back brakes and is urging people to dob in others who do the same.
It warned ''pedestrians and other bike riders are … at risk of serious injury or death if someone riding a fixed-gear bike loses control and collides with them''.
Melbourne bikers are more bemused than worried. ''It's like cracking down on people who pick their nose when driving,'' said Andy White, of cycling blog fyxomatosis.com.
Nick Mahoney, of Saint Cloud on Brunswick Street, ''a concept store fusing together fashion and fixed-gear bicycle culture'', said most fixie riders were safer than normal cyclists. ''You know exactly how quickly you can stop and you become much more aware of your surrounds and your limitations,'' he said.
Sasha Strickland, of Pony Bike in West Melbourne, described fixies as the purest communion between man, bike and road.
''You're more connected with the bike, and with the road; because of the constant drive of it, you can't stop pedalling.''
She said while she rode a fixie with front and rear brakes, she had built bikes for customers without brakes.

''I don't want to come across as some young punk who's going, 'yeah ride fixies' … Safety is an issue. I was hit by a truck six years ago and fractured my skull and lost my sense of smell.

''I strongly encourage all of my customers to have brakes. But ultimately, I've got to do what they want.''

ACCC's Peter Kell said it was retailers and wholesalers who were the target of the crackdown. Custom bikes are exempt from the safety standards, as are track bikes, the thoroughbred racing cycles that started the fixie craze.
Bicycle Victoria's Garry Brennan said several members had reported sales by bike shops of brakeless fixie bikes. He said would be difficult to stop people modifying their bikes. ''Just as hoons modify cars, similar personalities modify their bikes with unsafe changes and neither are desirable.''
Cyclists who broke the law by riding without safety equipment, including at least one brake, faced a fine of $149 and could be sued if they were in an accident.
Ms Strickland said the fixie craze was at least healthier than other youth trends. ''You take (fixies) away from them, they start doing graffiti, they start taking drugs … At least they're doing something physical and healthy.''
