Hi,

I've been taking photos at a few gigs randomly for the last year but wanted to see if anyone know's the best way to get a photo pass?

Any info will be ace.

Thanks for that,

haha I actually read that the other day, great info. What kind of free publications are good at giving amateurs a go? any recommendations....

I've hassled a few but no go so far, only hifi bar for a couple of gigs.

I guess it's all down to who you know.

Have you asked M+N? They might have some work for you.

Hernandez45  said about 2 years ago:

Yeah I'm starting to realise that and being from Canberra it's a slower process.

I asked M+N but they said they don't have anything to fit in their budget. Fasterlouder is o.k but they want photos done really quickly and I only shoot on film at the moment, but in the process of getting a digital SLR soon. Also most of the gigs are taken up quickly, so wanted another outlet.

If you're starting out, then your best bet is through websites like Faster Louder or The Dwarf.

You'll have troubles shooting film though. Everyone will want digital files pretty soon after the show.

And it'll take some time to work your way up to the bigger gigs which require photo passes. Start with the shows that don't require a pass to hone your skills and gain the trust of the outlet you shoot for.

if you are in canberra, you could try hassling the venues/promoters (in a nice way) to give you a pass in exchange for giving them the images. i used to have a regular pass at my local uni bar, so i had full access every gig, in exchange for giving them photos for their publicity. i effectively became their in-house photographer.

also, if there are specific bands you want to shoot, try contacting their management. when i was first starting out, the donnas came to town, and i shot their manager an email, and he gave me a photopass as a result. was great.

shoot local bands while you are still learning, to get your eye in and build a portfolio. if you can show you can take decent shots, you are more likely to get the more coveted gigs for things like FL and others. basically, hit everyone up you can, practice lots and you will find your way.

pretty sure free would fit into their budget.. its a trade off between being well known + connected and getting paid...

Hernandez45  said about 2 years ago:

Free always, it's all about just getting more opportunities to shoot. There are only a few who can get paid for music photography. Your right about being connected though, it helps a lot.
