Grinderman - Debut Album Out 5th March 2007

Foul-mouthed, noisy, hairy, and damn well old enough to know better, Grinderman are Nick Cave, Warren Ellis, Martyn Casey and Jim Sclavunos.

Born of babbling lyrics hatched from Bosch eggshells in the Hyde-bound apocalyptic margins of the Cave brain, the Grinderman sound is an instinctual yawlp that also resurrects the demons of each musician’s past: the trashcan proselytising of Birthday Party-era Nick; Sclavunos' late 70s New York no-wave noise wisdom; Martyn Casey’s ominous Triffids bass reverb; plus Ellis' avant-garde soundtrack work and his teenage love of Black Sabbath. Destination: Out!

Warren: "It was meant to be really open liberating thing, push those elements where we’d normally say ‘I don’t know about that’ and push on, relentless."
Nick: “We’re just searching for a bit of freedom"
Jim: "Ceaselessly banging away."
Warren: “Having Nick on the guitar changed the whole dynamic of the thing and threw us into a much more rudimentary ballpark."
Martyn: "It wasn't consciously two fingers to maturity but I remember thinking, all the way through, 'This isn’t bad for a bunch of old farts.'"

Nick Cave - Vocals, Electric Guitar, Electric Organ, Piano
Warren Ellis - Electric Bouzouki, Fendocastor, Viola, Violin, Acoustic Guitar, Hohner Guitaret, Backing Vocals
Martyn P Casey - Bass, Acoustic Guitar, Backing Vocals
Jim Sclavunos - Drums, Percussion, Backing Vocals

Grinderman sound different from everyone, including themselves. As Memphis Slim put it back in 1941, "While everything is quiet and easy/ Mr. Grinder can have his way.” It's a new day. God help you all.

that's quite a lineup. I didn't recognise Jim Sclavunos so I Googled him:

Jim Sclavunos is an American rock music drummer, percussionist and producer.

Sclavunos, who is a Greek-American from NYC ([1]),has performed with Sonic Youth, Tav Falco's Panther Burns, Lydia Lunch and was member of 8 Eyed Spy, The Cramps, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Alice Texas. Sclavunos is memorably described in the pages of The Wire as an "infamous elegant degenerate", has been a key player in Nick Cave’s illustrious Bad Seeds since 1994. During that time, James has also forged his own musical ensemble, The Vanity Set and their acclaimed debut album, The Vanity Set, is now available in the US.

Sclavunos long been a prime mover on the city’s vibrant underground music scene, helping to kick start the vital Bellmer Dolls, No Wave revolution (in Teenage Jesus & the Jerks & Eight Eyed Spy), before playing with such flaming hellions as Sonic Youth and The Cramps. He is currently performing with his own band The Vanity Set, while still performing with Nick Cave.

damn, great pedigree.

Check out Mick Turner's Exhibition, before March 31st! Mart Gallery is extremely proud to present Mick Turner from Dirty Three. To coincide with Dirty Three's upcoming Australian tour there will be a travelling exhibition of guitarist Mick
Turner's artwork. http://martgallery.com.au/exhibitions/

specialaward  said about 1 month ago:

Mick's work is also in the window of the Edinburgh Castle (Sydney Road) for the next few days..

registradus  said about 1 month ago:

What's Mick Turner got to do with Ginderman? You gettin yer Dirty Three members mixed up?

registradus  said about 1 month ago:

Also the Ginderman remix album sounds interesting. Interesting to hear Nick Cave's vocals in different context. I prefer the remixes on the Palaces of Montezuma EP to the original. Especially the Cenzo one.

untold/animals  said about 1 month ago:

It's not ''Ginderman'', it's spelled ''Grindrman''.
