Lawrence English + Seaworthy
Thursday 16 July
Serial Space
33 Wellington St, Chippendale
8pm $10

For over a decade, English’s audio investigations have traversed a divergent path where musical and environmental sources are granted equal focus. His work calls into question the established relationships of sound and structure – field recordings and musical materials work in unison, acting as suggestive devices. Published widely on respected imprints including Touch, 12K and Winds Measure, English’s work is sculpted and overwhelmingly intricate. As label manager, he has established Room40 as an internationally influencial record label specialising in electronic and experimental music. His most recent release on 12k, A Colour For Autumn, is a tonally rich affair, sourcing much of it’s sounds from a mixture of instruments, field recordings and assorted electronics. Seaworthy recently released their second full length for 12k, 1897. Recordings for the album were made in and around a 100 year old decommissioned ammunitions bunker in western Sydney during a three month residency with the Sydney Olympic Park Authority’s Arts Program. A series of improvisations, compositions and field recordings were made within the bunkers and surrounding natural environment. After sold out shows in Brisbane and Perth, Seaworthy return to Serial Space – complete with a new set of visuals. Seaworthy myspace

The show will feature individual sets from each artist and a collaborative set to finish the night.

Serial Space is an artist run gallery and performance site supporting a diverse range of emerging artists, musicians, writers and performers in Sydney, Australia and overseas. The gallery’s program of shows focusing upon cross-art form, inter-disciplinary, collaborative and hybrid practices. Serial Space website

is anyone recording this?

The man behind the Room 40 label makes his debut on Touch with this remarkable album. Blurring sound sources (both regular instruments and field recordings) with a variety of studio techniques, this Australian has created a swirling and amorphous group of compositions. Every moment on this album is captivating. Each piece is an exercise in sound sculpting perfection and yet is not just textbook examples of audio manipulation; the music is completely aesthetically pleasing. Brainwashed.
