Street Press pay rates

PerryHargraves  said about 1 year ago  or at  4:26PM on Thursday, July 2 2009.

So, can anybody confirm what these publications pay?

I heard Time Off paid $35 per band interview, nothing for CD reviews and nothing for live reviews.

I'm curious for the specific breakdown? Or is it just, like, TABOO?

What's out there? Does Furst Media and SPA have the monopoly or are there other paying publications?

Ha ha.

This thread title is an oxymoron.

Rob Furst, Pay Later. Don't expect any money.

i hope this isn't privileged information. here's what drum media pay me:

half page (1100 words) - $70 (plus an extra $20 if it gets syndicated)
quarter page (750 words) - $50 (plus an extra $20 if it gets syndicated)
cover story - $90
CD review - nada (the CD is 'payment')
live review - nada (freebie tickets are payment)

ask m&n for a job. they need writers and pay apparently. you will need to scour op shops for authentic white jeans and yellow double pocket baggy shirts from the 80s yourself though.

FEATURING DJ JAY-DEAD.

wikka wikka waaaaaaah.

PerryHargraves  said about 1 year ago:

Are you paid the same as the other contributors ADM?

That's better than what I expected.

What about the other ones?

And what about my other questions?

I was also going to ask in my initial post who would be the first to make a sarcastic comment but I feared it might just encourage it more.

Timsewaster, my understanding is that Furst Media does pay? What is your understanding exactly?

What do you do for a living, Perry?

Gbus  said about 1 year ago:

noob doubtage..

adamdmills  said about 1 year ago:

as far as i'm aware, that's what everyone else is getting paid. it's the same across the SPA stable - i can't speak for furst, or anyone else.

Answer the question

PerryHargraves  said about 1 year ago:

I work in administration and study journalism, annehelena. I am interested in music writing.

annehelena  said about 1 year ago:

How much do you earn?

PerryHargraves  said about 1 year ago:

About $45k.

PerryHargraves  said about 1 year ago:

Would you like to borrow some money?

annehelena  said about 1 year ago:

Nah, I'm just interested in administration.

PerryHargraves  said about 1 year ago:

Well, if you want to know anything else, feel free to PM me. But we are trying to have a discussion about other matters here. It's best we stay focused.

If you don't get involved in it you can keep your beautiful dream.

So, we have the rates for SPA. What about the rest?

What are the rest?

Perry, none of my business really, but you sound like a twat. When M+N Mag first started off they paid nothing. But it was the coolest thing to write for, cos it was local (Oz) and they wrote about local stuff...I had a strangely good time writing for them, and wrote some decent stuff, me thinks - What I mean is...you're a twat.

Here you go.

A cover story interview I did for B Side, back in 86. Got paid nothing, which was fair enough- it was a great afternoon.
15 years this got reprinted in a book. Again, I got paid nothing. But fuck, I was happy that it got in there.

Also- I think I am the only person on earth to have interviewed Ku Klux Frankenstein.

Succint. Surely you're not a reviewer?

Monty: surely the payrate formula for other majors is this:

(what we think the other guys are paying) - (10%) + (bullshit about 'job being reward') = rate, where rate < applicable MEAA/2.

street press would look much better in inky black and white. then groups with horribly glossy press shots would probably look slightly more appealing.

Block  said about 1 year ago:

I clicked that link expecting to see pics from Stiletto.

HEB  said about 1 year ago:

Hardly street press
Only moneyed folks could afford to buy Stiletto
Poorer folks just appeared in it

andyr said 8 minutes ago: as part of drowned in sound's ''music journalism rip'' week (which, if you ask me, is a bit over the top), brisbane critic andrew mcmillen has written a good piece titled ''an australian's input'' -- at everett true's request -- that discusses some of the things in this article.
definitely worth a read.
http://drownedinsound.com/in_depth/4137403-an-australian%E2%80%99s-input
quotes:
Where does this leave the state of music journalism, in the mind of this 21-year old Australian? It’s a given, but you’ve got to do it because you love it, first and foremost. Don’t ever expect thanks in return for your writing; indeed, do your best to expect nothin’ from nobody. That way, it’s hard to be disappointed.
But do pursue passionate communities organised around a love of music and writing, such as Drowned In Sound. Do start a blog that acts as your portfolio. Do send your work to those who may gain something from it. Do write wherever you can, and do be prepared to write for free.
After all, you’re a music journalist. You love it. Don’t you?

Thought that was re-posting here. Link
