Or ''The end of Martin Scorsese''.
Sure, M-Sco has done some awesome genre exercises in the past (De Niro raping Illeanna Douglas in *Cape Fear * MkII ? Yes, please) but this looks like a truly unmitigated turd.
2009 - the year Scorsese and Tarantino hit the skids (although really Scorsese has been debatable for quite some time now).
I can't link but the trailer is out and about. Peter Bradshaw must be weeping a single, slow tear from the eye of his penis in anticipation at the shellacking he will give this.

are you crazy, it looks fucking awesome
yeah, i'm looking forward to it too. scorsese's recent career basically consists of dressing up hackjob scripts with red shoes references, and somehow that's not a bad thing
trailer here
Looks like it might be one of the films he does for the studio, rather than himself.
All the cliches are there, let's hope it's OK.
I thought The Aviator was a fantastic period film, and The Departed was a sweet as fuck crime thriller. That said, Gangs was quite boring.
This looks decent - but you can never judge his films by the trailer. They typically seem quite user-friendly.
Hmmm.
is that a ''hmmm'' that's a damn good film?
or a ''hmmm'' my god scorsese has big eyebrows?
Very ludicrous, very enjoyable. If it's a choice out of serious Scorsese (Kundun) and genre buff Scorsese (Shutter Island), I'll take the latter.
Also, stick around for the full closing credits. Robbie Robertson put together a mash-up - a classical piece and a Dinah Washington vocal - that's incredible.
I completely agree and acknowledge my severe error.
Peter Bradshaw still blasted it, however.
more like shitter island. amiright or amiright?
It's a ''hmmm'' the trailer for this is a damn good film.
The film itself sucks.
I actually can't believe it's been so divisive.
It's up there as an easy to enjoy Scorsese-film (ala The Departed) but it's nowhere near as frivolous as that film and it's bereft of most of the dramatic/narrative problems that made the Aviator and Gangs of New York underwhelming (for me - I know some people loved them. I'm more partial to the Aviator than Gangs. Gangs just feels like it could have been great.).
I think the key difference is that Shutter Island is a twist film. It's apparent from early on that one is coming, it sets the tone and at a certain point you're just waiting for the explanation. People are a bit shocked that Scorsese is doing an M Night Shyamalan gimmick.
I wasn't shocked that Scorsese did a twist film. I was just annoyed by it. And such an obvious yet preposterous twist at that.
I am seeing this on the weekend. Can't wait.
Look, I enjoyed the ride, up until the point where I realised that all of the awesome-ness could only lead to one of many possible bad endings.
As an aside, I look forward to my next ecstasy experience.
Gonna turn the lights off and run around with some matches, devil ?
Make the missus wear a Michelle Williams mask?
Anyone who needs drugs to enjoy flicking matches at a semi-naked caged man while he shouts ''everything is your fault!'' isn't doing it right.
Great LA Times article on the soundtrack.
Feldman! Ligeti! Penderecki! Scelsi! Eno!
thought this was pretty good, but not genius.
also, the plot is far from straight-forward - nazi concentration camp subtexts for instance. I wont go into spoilers here, but seriously this film had loads of depth. totally not a matter of a simple twist playing out in front of you.
the scene where ben kingsley uses a blackboard to explain part the shyamarevelation was hilarious

Finally got 'round to watching this one last night and fucken' loved it.
It's one of those nice, chewy films that's half about the act of observing and constructing narratives. Daniels/Laeddis starts taking on the role of both the audience, trying to construct a narrative from the information given, and the camera, the device when selects and rejects precisely what information is available. The ''twist'' ending was interesting in that even this big reveal can be read as revealing one of two completely different possible narratives.
I think I'll need a second viewing of this (and likely a third and a fourth...) to untangle everything. I seem to remember things like hallucinations/flashbacks containing symbols referring to events that haven't taken place in the film yet and the like. Lookin' forward to gettin' stuck back into.
Yeah, aces oundtrack as well/
I saw it last night too, really enjoyed it.
Two thumbs up from me.
Very enjoyable Scorsese film.
Still trying to figure out the ending though, which of the two 'truths' was real?
I liked that the ending was fairly predictable but the way all the pieces fit together to get to that point wasn't.
yeah, not a bad film. i preferred it to the departed, but of the marty/leo films i go: aviator-shutter island-departed-gangs of new york (my least favourite scorsese film, goodfellas is number one and then king of comedy)
SPOILERS.
IS it still screening? I wanna see it. Haven't got around to it yet.
Only two????
Found it really frustrating, guessed the twist in the first 10 mins. Had it's moments though.
So I finally got around to watching this just then.
whilst watching I thought ''Gee this isn't really that good'' but then at the end it just sort of clicked, I thought it was amazing.
So much thought has gone into it, especially in post. For most of it I thought I was being real smart and going ''Ahh look, more continuity problems'' and ''That green screen looks shit'' but that just paid off in the end...
8/10
Which truth makes more sense? Both!!
Now my brain explode.
It pissed me off. 1/10
we are dooly appointed feduhrol mahhshalls
I still wanna see it. Fuck yas'
Ferry? Lighthouse?
much better on second viewing. performances all shine brighter. i enjoyed it a great deal more the second time.
four mor enjoyable than cliffhanger
i hired this but was bitterly disappointed, it started ok, then became boring, then from about the point when leonardo entered the cave it went down hill
I'n tired, sick and irritable. Time for some nutso Scorsese.
