Born again Christians

ConchyMcBleed  said about 5 years ago  or at  9:30PM on Saturday, November 4 2006 in chat

Today I found out that my sister has become christian, almost without warning. I don't know how it makes me feel...she's still my sister, but I'd always seen her as being a distinctly scientific person (she is after all a research scientist). I don't think she's the type to go around trying to convert people, but, still, I just don't know what to say to her now because I'm a distinctly a-religious person.

Ham!Rap  said about 5 years ago:

Listen, this may be hard to accept, but when your sister tells you that you could have your sins washed away by the blood of jesus christ, you gotta understand that she's no longer your sister and you MUST beat her to death with her own limbs. it's tough but it's the only way...

fucks sake, its not like its a disease.

hiponion  said about 5 years ago:

i don't know

i'd probably feel the same way about my sister becoming a born-again christian as i would if she contracted leprosy and tuberculosis

i'd want to stay the fuck away and not encourage excess breathing

HEB  said about 5 years ago:

Whatever gets her through the night

As long as she doesn't become evangelical, and pester every soul she meets to become like her

LoadMyRig  said about 5 years ago:

hmmm i reckon such a thing would completely change the way i relate to my sister.

my default setting is mockery and abject disrespect for bible basher, so this would be a very difficult change to negotiate. one would have to agree to disagree with the sibling and thereafter never approach any topic of convo bordering on religion or science. but shit - that lack or respect for the other's point of view is liable to fester.

ick. i feel for you conchy.

I'd call it a mental disability at least? haha.

hiponion  said about 5 years ago:

'perpetual no accountability or responsibility syndrome'

esquared  said about 5 years ago:

Nah seriously you guys are being as fucked as your typical hardline christian who would act like their sibling was diseased if they came out or something.

devo  said about 5 years ago:

fuck off god boy

hiponion  said about 5 years ago:

Except being gay doesn't mean you're a fuckwit. Being a preachy religious twat (as all 'born-again' Christians are) does.

Apples and oranges.

LoadMyRig  said about 5 years ago:

no esquared.

yr completely naive if you think that a overnight oppositional change in the lifestyle of one of the closest people to you wouldn't affect the way you relate to them.

devo  said about 5 years ago:

What better way to reach religious enlightenment and redemption by looking down and judging all those sinners around you.

esquared  said about 5 years ago:

im not saying it shouldnt, denial is silly as well. but cant you at least try to be accepting or something?

you're all pretty clueless if you think every christian is a preachy twat. hardcore christians shit me as much as anyone else but the way you're all being pretty judgmental here. christianity is extremely diverse and has merits if its taken (in what i consider) the right way. you guys are talking utter rubbish, belief in a higher power shouldn't warrant this kind of angst and it's ignorant to just throw everybody who does in the same box and label it "preachy fundamentalist". nobody knows what's going on here and its really quite pretentious to throw so much at people who think a higher power might weigh in somehow.

LoadMyRig  said about 5 years ago:

judgementalism is the bread and butter of this site.

whaddyawant from us???

but quite frankly, people who believe in a higher power are lesser beings in my mind....

hiponion  said about 5 years ago:

every 'born again' christian.

have you met these fuckwits? they're normally the fundamentalists, and most of them put the 'mentalist' in 'fundamentalist'. they seriously are all crazy, preachy, complete fucktards that can't let a minute go by without reminding you how they were saved, and you could be too if you accepted the lord as your god, etc.

esquared  said about 5 years ago:

So be it, i still think you should re-think it and be a bit tolerant.

not to mention nonsense like "What better way to reach religious enlightenment and redemption by looking down and judging all those sinners around you." judging a person because you think because of a belief they might be judgmental. good form.

LoadMyRig  said about 5 years ago:

i see yr point esquared.

i still think it would negatively affect my relationship with me sister.

and you don't know my sister or the relationship we share, so you can't understand what my reaction would be.

maybe if i was distant from them to begin with i wouldn't be affected so much.

but my sissy? as a christian? our relationship?

dude - show is OVAH !

yeah, ffs my father is one and i've been raised in the environment.
i've grown up surrounded by it and i know that the loudest ones are the worst, as well as generally the most likely to take certain scriptures out of context and pretty much be a general pain in the ass as well.

there's just as many, probably more, who quietly live their lives pretty normally, but (im gonna get technical/preachy here) also take the new-testament teachings of "love everyone and love yourself" (paraphrased) to heart.. and it's really quite harmless, if not having a fair bit of merit. they are good people and you probably won't even notice them because you think they are good dudes, and not christians (aka preachy twats who just need to shut up).

i know im probably getting preachy, and who knows maybe conchy's sister might become an annoying preachy twat. but you shouldn't throw all your eggs in one basket, and shouldnt assume the most extreme (hence stereotyped) example.

KickOutTheHams  said about 5 years ago:

doesn't anyone else empathize with me??? I might have been playing in a band with a born again christian for the last four months!!! and as for the other members, who knows what fucking weird sects they are members of....
seriously i wish i didn't have such a huge issue, but it's an automatic reaction to me, as soon as i find out there are christians in my midst i start getting paranoid that they're everywhere, and then I realise that we live in a white country and that in fact they are everywhere. unbelievers of the world unite and take over.

hiponion  said about 5 years ago:

i love the monty python sketch where the church is coming up the street to attack their house and they hit it with a missile that attacks the nearest place of worship 'right up the aisle'.

McGauz  said about 5 years ago:

dude, as long as he wasn't a preachy mofo that kept telling you your beliefs or non-beliefs were wrong and you'd go to hell, then what's the big deal? only reason I stopped seeing this christian chick years ago cos she always talked her christian nonsense. Her and her friends called me a "dreamer". Oooh I like to keep an open mind, woopdy doo

Ham!Rap  said about 5 years ago:

i dunno. i mean he's a really nice guy and he's got some great musical talent. I'm just hoping things will all come into perspective in a little while. more than anything it just showed me that you can't take people's motives for granted, and that I'm not gonna be able to rely on this outfit to take me to the top of the pops, if ya know what im saying. if it happens, well that'd be great, but i've certainly lost a fair bit of confidence, not in our potential to do big things, but in the ambitions of this dude. like if he wants to preach christian electro-pop to aboriginal communities then that's his prerogative and for sure it's not one without integrity, but i'm not in for the ride.

number none  said about 5 years ago:

get over it ia all i can say. if your sister is happy, be happy for her. Shes not hurting anyone and shes not hurt you

And ham hock, if you've know the guy and played with him a few months now i really don't think that there is going to be a problem if you haven't noticed his beliefs till now. sounds like any problem there is will come from you

If there is one thing I despise with utter hatred in this world more than limpid middle of the road rock it is limpid middle of the road christian rock.

I found this great cheap place to eat over here but everytime, as soon as I've ordered, the girl cranks this rancid shit up. I don't think I can eat there anymore. the most tepid, uninspired lyrics ever. I mean, come on.. if you need to give praise to something what's wrong with a good old fashioned hum or chant. No more limp-dick ky-lubed guitar licks.

Wonky  said about 4 years ago:

My fiancé works with this girl who's a bit of an evangelical christian. She's always sending emails out to people she knows about her upcoming bible study class/christian education seminars.

Her house was broken into and robbed last night, and she saw fit to send a group text out at 1am saying ''My house was broken into and robbed. I'm not sure what kind of lesson god is trying to teach me here. Pray for me''

These people infuriate me beyond all reason.

Psyclops  said about 4 years ago:

As a child from an aethiest family (although I was christened...go figure) I wouldn't say the church or the bible has any direct impact on my life. That's not to say I don't entertain the possibility of a higher power, I just won't pinpoint it to one god. The preachy born again element does annoy me, as it annoys a lot of people. However, I have been conferencing/msn with a guy who was working in our LA office named Ed. Ed is a born again christian, but never did he preach anything of his beliefs my way.

A while back, my baby boy was hospitalised and I was chatting to Ed one day about it. He told me a few days later that he had been praying for my son in church. I hardly knew this guy and he was sending thoughts my way. I was genuinely touched and thanked him accordingly. I guess what i'm trying to say is, if being a born again makes you a nice person, what's the fuss? Preaching/judging is one thing, but believing is fine by me.
