Has just been announced that we'll be getting Oz premieres of Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds and Lars Von Trier's Antichrist - the one that caused all the hoo-ha in Cannes.

I'm guessing they'll probably both get theatrical distribution but if you can't wait...

steveholt  said about 2 years ago:

i think i read yesterday that the full program is released 10th july

which seems oddly close to the starting date and not much time to buy tickets.

MREGIRL  said about 2 years ago:

i have my mini pass already!

MREGIRL  said about 2 years ago:

and i agree not soon enough to sort through a large program of films!

russiancaravan  said about 2 years ago:

I'll start a separate thread if there isn't already one, but thought there'd be lots of people interested in this strand at MIFF. From The Age's 'Sticky Carpet':

MELBOURNE's post-punk scene in the late 1970s/early '80s will be the subject of a major retrospective at this year's Melbourne International Film Festival.

Punk Becomes Pop: the Australian Post-Punk Underground will feature films, video clips, live concerts and lost Super-8 footage of bands such as the Boys Next Door, Primitive Calculators, the Models, Essendon Airport, Plays With Marionettes and Crime & the City Solution.

Highlights include a digitally restored version of Richard Lowenstein's post-punk classic Dogs in Space, featuring Michael Hutchence in a role based on Sam Sejavka from the band the Ears, fashion designer Alannah Hill and actor Noah Taylor; Lowenstein's documentary on the making of the film, Living on Dog Food; Haydn Keenan's Going Down, which has been described as ''Sex and the City for the post-punk set''; and Punkline, about fabled St Kilda venue the Crystal Ballroom.

There will also be a series of reformations taking place at Ding Dong Lounge in the city, while the Ears will play a one-off reformation show with Steve Kilbey, Sean Kelly, Nick Barker, Hugo Race, David Bridie, Brian Hooper and DJ Ollie Olsen at the Corner Hotel on August 16.

For details, check the festival guide in The Age on July 10.

Chinese Roulette was fucking killer.

Everyone Else was pretty good too, and I reckon the main character owed a lot to many of Gena Rowlands incarnations in Cassavetes' flicks, or at least reminded me of.

Zift was ok, but just not my sorta thing. I liked the line about being raped by the vulgarian bulgarians and then squatting down in the flower bed of life. When the director mentioned afterwards about how he'd gone with a more American style of editing over the Bulgarian style of long shots I kinda wish he'd just stuck with his roots but that's just me and...

Morphia was fantastic. Loved it, though why the fuck half the cinema was laughing at the conclusion was beyond me.

That's me done I reckon, unless I can drag myself into ACMI tonight for Gushing Prayer.

TimChuma  said about 2 years ago:

The Sky Crawlers was meh, The Chaser kicked arse and is being remade by the same people who did the Departed, Thirst was weird.

Ong Bak 2 was a bit of a let down, was made a bit better by some woman yelling out ''you deserved that psycho!'' and the whole audience laughing at her.

bungle  said about 2 years ago:

The Bastards was terrible.

almost wholly endless, extended long shots for no reason that I could see other than a try at 'artiness', and an attempt to ape Funny Games for all it's worth but with none of the wit or tension.

One excellent instance of makeup gore though.

Felt sorry for the director, as it didn't seem like anyone bothered with the q&a afterwards.

BlackCatWhiteCat  said about 2 years ago:

i thought the bastards wasn't too bad, the long slow shots for me highlighted the experience of the protagonists, and really served to provide a look at mundane regular life as they experienced it, and was used well as a tool to further highlight the main 'event' in the film and provide contrast.

i agree that it was a lot like funny games in that it's ultimate result is to question how we view death in film, but i also liked the way we were given more of a personal insight into the emotions and everyday life of the characters.

Antichrist was atrocious

postergirl  said about 2 years ago:

It was great to see Dogs in Space again, and on the big screen. The restored print looks great.

Michael Hutchence's performance is still shite though,

JudyDickslap  said about 2 years ago:

I think Dogs in Space is a horrible movie full stop. But like, that's just my opinion.

postergirl  said about 2 years ago:

I can see why people wouldn't like it, but it warms my cockles for some reason.

TimChuma  said about 2 years ago:

The woman in the audience who yelled out during Ong Bak 2 was funny also.

louis  said about 2 years ago:

i thought that was a man timchuma? definitely funny though. much funnier than the moron next to me in the chaser who barracked for the protagonist like he was watching the damn thing in his living room.

nyx  said about 2 years ago:

Dogtooth was amazing. Amazing in an incredibly fucked up way but still amazing.

sting-bono  said about 2 years ago:

I really want to see Inglourious Basterds again. I went into it thinking it'd be shit but I think it's Tarantino's masterpiece (as i think he might too going on the final scene). The long drawn out conversations actually served a purpose in this movie especially the suspenseful dialogue between the crafty and persuasive SS badguy, Landa, and his many suspects. Some piss funny moments too, Mike Myers is gold.

Also liked the idea of rewriting history. plus it had very intelligent undertones, Jewish suicide bombers, OSS-Nazi dealbroking, etc. Brad Pitt was amazing and the actor playing Landa deserves an oscar. So many great characters too, like Hugo Stiglitz and Donny the Bear Jew, I hope he makes a prequel to it. The ending is fucking brilliant.

potcrok  said about 2 years ago:

I must say i was a bit underwhelmed by inglorious basterds but that could be because I was falling asleep at parts due to fatigue. It had good parts but I found some the drawn out scenes quite tedious. Brad Pitt was excllent and I think the scene where they are pretending to speak Italian is a classic. I thought the casting was awsome, it was quite weird to see nerdy Neil from Freaks and Geeks gunning down Nazis. Even weirder that he looks the exactly the same as he did then.

potcrok  said about 2 years ago:

By the way. Seeing 6 films in a day is not good for your health.

TimChuma  said about 2 years ago:

The supposed protest outside the 10 Conditions of Love Screening (was two blokes yelling)

Their placards were so pissy someone in the line tipped them over to save them further embarrassment.

Collaterly_Sisters  said about 2 years ago:

I'm guessing all the media with their OB vans were pissed off that there wasn't more of a shitfight. There was probably more tension in the actual battle for seats - and in the ire of members when told there was no priority queue.

sister  said about 2 years ago:

still, this was the top pic story on the new york times website on monday afternoon.

that's still excellent pr for miff. thanks chinese govt.

Collaterly_Sisters  said about 2 years ago:

Yes - China's ham-fisted response certainly gave the film something of a publicity bonanza. And resulting limited national cinema release it may not otherwise have had (not to mention invitations to overseas festivals, reports in The Guardian, The New Yorker, The Hollywood Reporter etc). Added bonus - my name was in the credits, weee! A bit of a lovely surprise given I did stuff-all, bar a bit of transcibing that wasn't even needed in the end.

If you missed it, Nova is having a screening and Q&A with the director next Tuesday.

postergirl  said about 2 years ago:

I just interviewed Jeff Daniels (director of 10 Conditions … ) – fascinating stuff. His new film sounds pretty damn interesting as well.
