Films/TV set in outer Sydney?

MissAustralia2003  said about 3 years ago  or at  10:03AM on Tuesday, April 28 2009 in films

someone told me that there is no mainstream focussed on suburban Sydney. In Melbourne is rife with Dame Edna, Sullivans, Neighbours, Kath and Kim, Kenny, Castle etc etc.

But Sydney ..... or Brisbane...... I came up with 'They're a Werid Mob', Wally Magoo (?) and possibly Strictly Ballroom (although that may have been Newtown?).. but nothing else, Blank.

Any ideas? Was Division 4, Matlock Police in the inner city?

Also, Love My Way.

Ohyeah  said about 3 years ago:

praise i mean, wasn't that brisbane?

Godzilla  said about 3 years ago:

footy legends was set in Yagoona

FJ Holden was set in Panania, i think

MissAustralia2003  said about 3 years ago:

Praise was Brisvegas - inner city. I'm looking at Sydney/Brisbane suburbs. So far:
- They're a Weird Mob
- Sylvania Waters
- Strictly Ballroom
- The Boys
- Little Fish
- Wildside

Fit. Not sure where Love is a Four Letter Word was set - inner or outer?

thenewmeatloaf  said about 3 years ago:

Love Is was set in Newtown - specifically, the Courty.

tinyman  said about 3 years ago:

Love is a Four Letter Word inner. Erskineville is inner, innit?

Where was Kingswood Country meant to be?

thenewmeatloaf  said about 3 years ago:

FJ was Panania/Revesby/Padstow.

MissAustralia2003  said about 3 years ago:

Muriels wedding - Porpoise Spit?

Kingswood Country was Victorian

jimmy hutspah  said about 3 years ago:

closer each day, home and away...........

__v  said about 3 years ago:

Okay. According to Wikipedia Hey Dad was set in Chatswood. I don't count that as inner city (although residents of Rooty Hill might disagree).

thenewmeatloaf  said about 3 years ago:

Kingswood Country was most definitely NOT Victorian! Sydney suburbs all the way, although no suburb was specified.

Heartbreak High was shot in and around Maroubra, including Little Bay, La Perouse ... that's pretty suburban. Um, yeah. Dame Edna has Moonee Ponds, while Kath & Kim have a fictional suburb that could be anywhere in Australia, really. What was the question again?

Godzilla  said about 3 years ago:

did Jackie Chan shoot a movie in Australia a while back?

First Strike features Chan as a CIA agent dispatched to prevent a nuclear arms deal between a former Chinese intelligence agent and the Russian Mafia. And Mr. Nice Guy has Chan playing a famous TV chef, who finds himself in the middle of a gang war after inadvertently saving the life of a reporter. Both take place in Melbourne, Australia.

__v  said about 3 years ago:

Dame Edna hasn't actually spent much time in Moonee Ponds since the 1950s, has she? Although it is certainly in her DNA.

outerspacextrapnel  said about 3 years ago:

How about He Died With A Felafel In His Hand? That's got cliches a plenty for all three cities.

MissAustralia2003  said about 3 years ago:

yeah good point - it's like Henry Lawson writing about outback Australia when he rarely left the inner city. Sounds like a lot of bands too.....

And similarly Kath and Kim creators live in South Yarra..... etc etc.

That's the next test - to identify those whose themes are suburbia and actually lives/lived there.

Reg Mombassa? Howard Arkeley?

MissAustralia2003  said about 3 years ago:

good point ___v that is

MissAustralia2003  said about 3 years ago:

He Died with A Felafel is very much inner urban. John Birmingham would get a nose bleed if he left the inner city

outerspacextrapnel  said about 3 years ago:

Even the Brisbane part?

mealzebub  said about 3 years ago:

Further research reveals Dame Edna was born in Wagga. She did start her career in Moonee Ponds, however.

The Black Balloon was set in suburban sydney I think?

sister  said about 3 years ago:

forgive this gross generalisation (or not) but doesn't sydney function as a stand-in for all of Australia?

That means the sub(urban) story doesn't have to be specifically Sydney, just Australian.

Whereas Melbourne and other cities have more of a specific regional identification - especially in opposition to Sydney's claim on Australianness.

CaptainFez  said about 3 years ago:

It's the generic Big Bad City, I think. Hence it being the site of all that hardship and drill-press-pulling in David Bowie's Let's Dance filmclip.

sushoban  said about 3 years ago:

Ozploitation flicks like Stone and Chain Reaction were set in Syd suburbs.

Godzilla  said about 3 years ago:

the majority of shows depicting Sydney show that everyone, no matter how poor, has a harbour view from their home.

shazzat  said about 3 years ago:
  • That god-awful film Garage Days - shows newtown etc.

  • I second Love My Way... that shows a lot of inner Sydney.

  • All Saints (hospital in Concord?)

  • The Matrix featured shots of Sydney

  • Mission Impossible 2

  • Underbelly...

When I was growing up I thought suburban Sydney was bland and boring and empty and the mortal enemy of art and life

When I was growing up I thought Australia was bland and boring and empty and the mortal enemy of art and life. turns out what i thought was true.

Lantana was set in northern Sydney, the abandoned car is on the old pacific hwy towards Brooklyn.
Fireflies was set in the outer northwest/Hawkesbury.
Has noone mentioned Home & Away up at Palm Beach, or is ''Summer Bay'' not counted as ''Sydney''?
East West 101 was set around Auburn/Lakemba.

Peter  said about 3 years ago:
