Blurgh.

ms moses works in fremantle - is it doable to commute to perth from fremantle every day? how long?

Which Part of Perth?

also anyone else tell me about cool stuff in perth/fremantle

The airport normally has lots of departing flights.

toadphoney  said about 3 years ago:

Oh... I forgot! After the Billions of dollars in mining royalties, Perth now has a ferris wheel down by the river. Which I should mention, they don't own but rather allow a private operator to operate.

toadphoney  said about 3 years ago:

Fremantle if good.

toadphoney  said about 3 years ago:

Fremantle is good.

freo to perf train is ~$2-3 from memory and doesn't take too long. it's pretty easy to cycle as well (less than 20k a direction) but you may find the trip home a bit windy riding along the coast. driving in will slog you hard in traffic time and parking fees.

perth is weird... culturally and socially it ranges from insular and xenophobic to inspired and unique to insipid xeroxes of elsewhere. the music scene features some great and diverse acts and there is a pretty strong community spirit. at the same time there is a big ''perf music is the awesomest thing everrr'' mentality which isn't entirely justified... sure there are cool bands, but there are cool local bands in every scene everywhere.

the beaches are sweet.

Kristy  said about 3 years ago:

Perth is ok, i grew up there.
Freo is just another suburb, its not far from perth a fairly easy commute. I hear renting is a nightmare though, the commodities boom has pushed up the prices and all the miners need units to rent out in their downtime.

Summers in Perth are great if you like the beach and like stever said, the music scene is thriving, but I always found it was kinda cliquey. The venues arn't great either, and there is a real sense of it existing in a bubble, at times you can tell its the most isolated city on the planet. Its not all bad, there is great food, down south makes a great day trip, wineries, fish&chips on the beach, it would be great to get into the lifestyle for a year or so.

I have great memories of the place, sometimes i miss it, but i left as soon as i could for Melbourne.
i suggest you move over, make her fall so in love with you that she will move back to sydney with you.
Goodluck!

Paging russiancaravan to the thread!

luke  said about 3 years ago:

I am considering moving to Perth in about 1 yr. Royal Perth Hospital seems to have a very good graduate nurse programme. What are all the suburbs near royal perth hospital like?

russiancaravan  said about 3 years ago:

RPH is just on the outskirts of the CBD, luke, so your closest decent bets would be the CBD (very boring, dead after 5pm), East Perth, Highgate and Mt Lawley. I'd recommend Highgate or Mt Lawley - they are just off Beaufort Street, with decent public transport and a few good restaurants, cafes, bars, clothing stores. The redeveloped part of East Perth is very sterile, I find. I strongly recommend going to Perth (if you haven't already) before you move there.

I think there's also a Shenton Park campus of RPH though - so it may depend on where you are posted.

russiancaravan  said about 3 years ago:

Also, apologies, moses - I missed this thread. Let me know if you want to anything more about Perf that hasn't been covered here. Although I haven't lived there in six years - some of the Perfies might be more use!

gottagetawookie  said about 2 years ago:

what is there to do other than beer barns, quokka soccer and touristy stuff?

toadphoney  said about 2 years ago:

Do you like ferris wheels?

gottagetawookie  said about 2 years ago:

only at Meredith when Bob Log is playing, i have a limited attn span

toadphoney  said about 2 years ago:

Can you fight? Scarborough beach car park is a great spot for a scuffle.

toadphoney  said about 2 years ago:

They have an arena for such things down there now.

gabbo  said about 2 years ago:

sweet! I'll be staying at Scarborough in january.

Weapons needed?

al  said about 2 years ago:

last time i was in perth there was actually some weird wrestling comp going on in that arena.. people had flown out from the USA to watch, apparently..

Little creatures is at least $2/6 pack cheaper in Perth than NSW..

Channel 7 & 9 are on Gay St

Taxi's are harder to come by in Perth than any other city on earth..

thats all the trivia i can offer.

toadphoney  said about 2 years ago:

New board shorts should suffice. If they have elements of the Australian flag on them you'll probably make heaps of new friends.

Practice saying cunt at the end of all your sentences.

Head to the brewery in freo.

IronMic  said about 2 years ago:

Perth is not as bad as the whingers make it out to be. if you are into busy busy hustle and bustle, it may not be for you. but if you like it laid back, then it will be more your thing. it's actually quite a beautiful place. it's funny, it seems people from out of town fall in love with it and move here, whereas people born here can't wait to get out. i do agree with it feeling like living in some sort of weird bubble sometimes.
fremantle is a bit hippie and trendy in parts, but very nice. scarborough is alright, just stay away from the stanford arms :-)

IronMic  said about 2 years ago:

i might as well add, i travel around australia often for my work, and IMO the perth music scene is probably the most diverse and quality>quantity in aus. and im not just saying that in a ''we rock!'' sort of way. just an observation i have made over the last 5 years.

gabbo  said about 2 years ago:

if i were to suggest a day outing for 11 guys aged 25 to 40, what would be appropriate (i assume the answer will be the breweries)?

astralwerkor  said about 2 years ago:

You could do a tour in the Valley, but that's a fairly boganish thing.

toadphoney  said about 2 years ago:

Does laid back mean not progressing from the 1950's?

I love heavily restricted trading hours.

it's funny, it seems people from out of town fall in love with it and move here

You gotta love people from Rockingham and Geraldton.

wardrobebrains  said about 2 years ago:

perth isn't the most isolated city in the world. honolulu is. you don't need a boat to look around the outskirts of perth.
here's a fun game. say to a perth person ''what is the most isolated city?''
they'll say ''perth is the most isolated city in the world.''
then you say ''perth isn't the most isolated city in the world. honolulu is.''
then they'll say ''ok. but its the most isolated capital city in the world.''
?

it's like perth is in competition with the rest of the world. but if perth went and saw the rest of the world, it wouldn't bother.

gottagetawookie  said about 2 years ago:

for a city that's too hot to ride around by pushy and people, generally well, can't drive. why is there a need for motorcycle parking and generally less 2 wheels and more 4wd's??

toadphoney  said about 2 years ago:

It isn't really too hot to ride a pushy - there is a very limited amount of routes for cyclists - and as you've touched on, car drivers will not give way nor show courtesy to anybody not in a car.

toadphoney  said about 2 years ago:

You need a 4wd if you live in the most isolated city in the world. Even If you only use if for shopping and driving to work.

gottagetawookie  said about 2 years ago:

for also reversing into garbage bins at the shops and driving in the middle of the road it seems too.

gabbo  said about 2 years ago:

sounds like a slightly bigger Bendigo

moses  said about 2 years ago:

so ive been living in fremantle for about 4 months or so now.

its pretty nice. perth cbd is pretty boring, but i havent been out to mt lawley/west leederville yet, where i hear there is some good stuff.

yeah drivers arent great, nobody indicates in perth for some reason.

Peter  said about 2 years ago:

so toady was right? i mean, it's not as if i'd have thought otherwise, but sometimes it is nice to know you're right.

toadphoney. 'nuff said.

moses  said about 2 years ago:

fremantle is so full of culture and devoid of culture at the same time, its quite interesting
