Grong Grong

yokota  said about 3 years ago  or at  11:58PM on Monday, March 23 2009 in music news

Just read via another forum, that Grong Grong are reforming to play a bush fire benefit gig this Saturday 28th in Adelaide, with 3 of the 4 original members. Anybody know more about this, and if there will be more gigs?

Seemed like as good a reason to start a topic on the band anyhow.

Fuck yeah....if only I was in Adelaide. Actualy I've never been to Adelaide but I would love to se Grong Grong

yokota  said about 3 years ago:

Yeah if I lived closer I'd consider going to Adelaide for this. This is pretty pathetic, and i can't remember if i needed to take a detour, but I had lunch in Grong Grong whilst traveling through the guts of NSW, and even took photos of the town sign and shit. For a band that released such a small amount of studio material plus the live stuff including the DNA tape, I reckon they're fucking great.

LaxCharisma  said about 3 years ago:

I've just got the one record (name escapes me at the moment), but it's a good un'

yokota  said about 3 years ago:

Thats the only record that was put out, and one side of that is live. There's also at least one live DNA tape of a gig at the Princes Berkeley Hotel in 84. Plus the fucking killer track 'Japanese Train Driver' appears on the Waste Sausage comp put out by Black Eye. Not sure if any other material was comped?

LaxCharisma  said about 3 years ago:

DNA?? is that an off shoot band.
I got that Waste Sausage comp. Took me awhile to find it.

anonymous  said about 3 years ago:

is that the self titled record? remember reading about it in unbelievably bad #5.

yokota  said about 3 years ago:

Nah, DNA was a fanzine out of Adelaide in the 80s/90s, that also put out tapes

anonymous  said about 3 years ago:

and it talked about a comp that was spose to come out in 2007, but i guess it hasn't.

LaxCharisma  said about 3 years ago:

Self titled? Grong Grong? I guess so...I can't go look through the ecords right now cause I'll wake the missus. As for the compilations there was Wastes Sausage & Leather Dougnut.

I remember reading about DNA now.

round the mag issue upstairs.

yokota  said about 3 years ago:

Yeah that's the record, it was put out by Alternative Tentacles, after they supported the Dead Kennedy's on an Aust tour.

anonymous  said about 3 years ago:

says there was also a local release with a slightly different tracklisting.

LaxCharisma  said about 3 years ago:

Yep that makes sense. I remember it has the Alternative Tentacles logo on the label and it's splatter vinyl. Purple I think.

yokota  said about 3 years ago:

i think there was/is supposed to be some sort of discography release with some live footage, that was maybe mentioned in unbelievably bad.

LaxCharisma  said about 3 years ago:

Cheers anonymous. Thats the one.

yokota  said about 3 years ago:

Yeah the local release was put out by 'aberrant' and doesn't have the purple on the cover.

LaxCharisma  said about 3 years ago:

OK...yeah...that makes sense.

I know what I'll be dusting off tomorow.

anonymous  said about 3 years ago:

local release doesn't have a mc5 cover.

yokota  said about 3 years ago:

You can still get old copies of DNA plus some of the tapes via ozmusicbooks, The author was Harry Butler, who I think is now maybe a comedian?

anonymous  said about 1 year ago:

i'm slightly annoyed now, thats a awesome lineup.

LaxCharisma  said about 1 year ago:

Well...it's been 3 years since I made the trek to Melbourne.
This was enough to draw me back.

Hellzapoppin  said about 1 year ago:

I'm still undecided.. if Grong Grong do another show somewhere else I'll probably just end up at that.

FrankieTeardrop  said about 1 month ago:

Two of the best gigs I've seen in ages.

I loved how Charley only had 2 strings left on his guitar at the end of Sunday night, but still managed to play a killer version of 'Whole Lotta Love'.

Come back soon, Grongers!

LaxCharisma  said about 1 month ago:

Maaaan I wish I'd seen that. I hope they get to Sydney again. Better still I hope they do another album. Those newer songs are great.

FrankieTeardrop  said about 1 month ago:

The Old Bar set with Paul Kidney Experience and Bodies was phenomenal. All bands were ear-bleedingly phenomenal, but Grong Grong took the cake for sheer repetitive brutality that still made made people wiggle their hips in orgiastic ecstasy. Simple, beautiful, perfect.

Ben  said about 1 month ago:

yep... the Old Bar gig was stellar
