A-League 2009/10 Season

TopherPlus  said about 2 years ago  or at  1:17PM on Monday, March 23 2009 in chat

Just because we're getting more and more developments re the new teams etc.

-Rumoured that 2nd melb team to be announced within 24 hours
-Coyne and Garcia being chased by Glory and AUFC respectively
-Additionally Kevin Phillips on Glory's radar as potential Marquee

Not technically a-league but rumours of an ANZAC day clash between the Socceroos and Turkey

hiponion  said about 2 years ago:

dukes is so coming back for that second melb team

illywhacker  said about 2 years ago:

Yeah, beats playing in the Championship with Newcastle.

hiponion  said about 2 years ago:

he'd destroy the championship, but...

TopherPlus  said about 2 years ago:

Interesting article on the proposed Tassie bid.

Linky

TopherPlus  said about 2 years ago:

And dukes is coming back to play for the Melbourne Knights....everyone knows that...sheesh.

gabbo  said about 2 years ago:

would Turkey be regarded as the holders of the trophy for that ANZAC day clash?

kazpatafta  said about 2 years ago:

Jody Craddock is apparently a Glory target too.

TopherPlus  said about 2 years ago:

Just heard a rumour that the 11th and 12th licences to be announced today as

-Melbourne

-Tasmania

kazpatafta  said about 2 years ago:

I'd call bullshit but the FFA may just be dumb enough to give it to Tasmania. 11 and 14 I'd give to Melbourne, Western Sydney, Wollongong/South Coast and Canberra

jasmine.po  said about 2 years ago:

Hmmm, Ben Buckley was on the World Game on Sunday saying that their aim is to have a 20,000 crowd average in the A-League. That just isn't going to happen with teams like Tasmania or Wollongong in the competition.

Not that that should preclude their involvement in the competition. But just saying...

TopherPlus  said about 2 years ago:

Its a comp wide average though. What we need is for SFC, QRFC, GCU to draw bigger crowds to bump that average up.

As a state with no teams (bar cricket) to support in any nationwide comp, it does have that going for it.

k2  said about 2 years ago:

no announcements?

TopherPlus  said about 2 years ago:

Nope, new rumours are that old rumours were just that.

Although additional new rumours state that Melbourne2 WILL be announced in next few days...

So really....i know nothing.

anonymous  said about 2 years ago:

giving it to tasmania may not be all that bad, they may support the team just from spite of getting looked over by every other sporting code in the nation.

TopherPlus  said about 2 years ago:

Tassie supporters have turned up in decent numbers to the pre-season cup matches down there. 5k and 8k to watch MVFC play in a fairly meaningless competition.

TopherPlus  said about 2 years ago:

Heh...Ljubo is bailing on the Jets after a bust up with GVE.

Dude is obviously a dead-set wanker.

k2  said about 2 years ago:

tasmania has a cricket team. pura cup or whatever the hell it's called - the one where they have matches at the MCG and only the players wives turn up.

carlos esq  said about 2 years ago:

I dunno if I'd be digging into Ljubo just yet... this is the Jets we're talkin' 'bout. I smell another CONspiracy!

ed  said about 2 years ago:

No. Ljubo's a fuckhead.

carlos esq  said about 2 years ago:

OK. I now blame Con for signing the fuck.

The land a central-ish stadium in any major city would take up would be worth 5+ million alone.

Also, the more professional stadiums, like Suncorp, are providing uniformly the best pitch. There are compelling reasons for some clubs to move away from the shitty deals they're getting at their current stadiums (see Brisbane), but others, like Melbourne moving to Bubbledome and Adelaide's tenure at Hindmarsh seem perfect for their clubs. The main issue for the financial viability of the clubs will be the new tv rights deal due in 2011 which will ensure most clubs are operating in the black.

Technical standards have more to do with what we're teaching players when they're 9 than what they're learning when they're in the A-league, where it should be more of a tactical education (which is lacking in its own right, but slowly getting better).

columbo  said about 1 year ago:

dudes this is tough viewing - where to from here? Melb are cannon fodder tonight. yeesh...

columbo  said about 1 year ago:

it's a shame - so far Melb look reduced to longball and/or hack tactics.

excuse my ignorance but why is Muscat not playing year AFC games?

columbo  said about 1 year ago:

''year'' = ''these'' by the way sorry. iPhone spellcheck kills me every time

MrsGideon  said about 1 year ago:

Take it here, columbo.

columbo  said about 1 year ago:

John Aloisi has signed for new side Melbourne Heart. The 34-year-old striker, best known for sending Australia to the last World Cup, today revealed the club's red and white striped kit at the city's newest sports venue. Picture: Chris Scott

anonymous  said about 1 year ago:

should probably be 10/11.

MrsGideon  said about 1 year ago:

Hmm... the logo and the kit makes me think of hospitals.

The 34-year-old striker, best known for sending Australia to the last World Cup,

This really shits me. Yes he scored the penalty, but his contribution outside that was minimal.

ed  said about 1 year ago:

He won't get booed in Melbourne. Good choice.

gabbo  said about 1 year ago:

i like the strip.

k2  said about 1 year ago:

surely you jest.

ed  said about 1 year ago:

Not by his own crowd at least.

Video of Oar Zullo and Sarota signing for Utrecht. In Dutch but interview snippets with the boys in English. Tommy especially seems like a genuinely nice guy

Really glad they all managed to impress enough to get contracts. Sad though of course losing them and worried (even moreso) about how the Roar are going to go next season. Especially intrigued to see how Sarota goes. I thought he was one of the most under appreciated players in the entire league before dropping off a bit towards the end. Could end up being very similar to Jason Culina both in terms of style and ability I reckon.

kazpatafta  said about 1 year ago:

Oh yeah and slightly disappointed over the fee we got. Guess a club in the Roar's financial state can't drive a hard bargain, but hopefully at least there's some nice sell on clauses in there.

columbo  said about 1 year ago:

The 34-year-old striker, best known for sending Australia to the last World Cup,

yeah, it more all about Schwarzer for mine. and nothing ever seems to be said about how Viduka missed his penalty!

I was there that night & I must say, walking back to Concord West station through the park, it felt like we pulled off some kinda massive heist.

hang on, where am i going with this?

hiponion  said about 1 year ago:

Gutted about losing the lads - we've now got a whole squad to replace, and an absolute muppet doing the job. Not optimistic about next season even remotely.

k2  said about 1 year ago:

hiponion, get on the heart bandwagon!
