Calexico

ProDelgado  said about 5 years ago  or at  11:44AM on Thursday, November 2 2006 in events

Went along to see Calexico last night, with support from A Hawk and a Hacksaw (who were actually busking outside the venue earlier on) and Beirut. Had a cracking night, but couldn't help but think that Calexico were a bit bland at times. Their more mariachi sounding songs were good, but some of the newer songs strayed awfully close to just being MOR americana.

They ended their main set with a wonderful cover of Alone Again Or that was really something.

we were listening to hot rail the other night and wondering what they actually have in the way of a live horn section. can you share any insight? my housemate will think i'm really cool if i come home with the answer.

jealous, by the way :)

How were Beirut?

Goal attack  said about 5 years ago:

new album suxx, but i would still have loved to be there.

ProDelgado  said about 5 years ago:

At least one trumpet on most songs, with the occasional bout of two trumpets...I was going to try to get photos, but we were sat in the front row, and it was a posh venue, photo-taking was frowned upon.

Beirut would have been mint...one of the band was ill, hence a Hawk and a Hacksaw playing when they weren't scheduled to...the remaining members of Beirut who weren't ill joined them for one song though, and it was really really good - shame they couldn't do more.

HanoiJane is STILL obsessed with this band.

jimmytrash  said about 5 years ago:

So are they doing any other dates in Aus?

I know people who would die to see them in Adelaide.

jimmytrash  said about 5 years ago:

me included.

calico  said about 5 years ago:

i love them, but their last record was boring.

jimmytrash  said about 5 years ago:

Fuckin ups to that.

it completely lost me as a fan, if i didnt love the earlier ones so much.

Spoke is an utter masterpiece. I really cant stand how bands that are so majestical in their own way, completely heaven touching, then ruin it by making such a stereotypical 'beautiful' album.

Wilco and now Calexico as well? I think all my wildest dreams are coming true! Soon Gareth from the Drones will propose to me and everything will be as it should. ^_^

ChrisBrimstone  said about 5 years ago:

Also Edith Frost!
What do you recomend re: getting into Calexico?
and i don't suppose anyone has a spare press release for this tour lying around to make my work day go down smooth and easy?

hyperfuzz  said about 2 years ago:

they played a great cover of minutemen's corona golden plains.

MissAustralia2003  said about 2 years ago:

aaah corona was on convict pool. i've played 2500 calexico songs in the last couple of years, and that's only the ones that were tracked on my computa, but i don't think i'm obsessed, just it will be super. i will now logoff before my enthusiasm gets repetitive and uncool

slothman  said about 2 years ago:

the ruled at golden plains. just really, really great music.

BigBoysSocks  said about 2 years ago:

Starting to get real excited. Walking distance to the Thornbury Theare - fuckin' loving it!

theparisend  said about 2 years ago:

thornbury theatre would be lovely for these guys

i would've liked a lot more instrumental stuff in their gp set, but then again i would

the set they performed was good fro the crowd, especially anyone who doesn't know them at all

BigBoysSocks  said about 2 years ago:

Fingers crossed for us then, tpe.

theparisend  said about 2 years ago:

yes, i have my fingers in a chinese puzzle of crossedness for you all who are going tonight

for at least 50% instrumentals

russiancaravan  said about 2 years ago:

They were incredible at Womad and even more incredible tonight at the Thornbury. I'm a happy happy girl.

sharptooth  said about 2 years ago:

yeah that was pretty amazing last night

theparisend  said about 2 years ago:

were there many instrumentals?

sharptooth  said about 2 years ago:

a few instrumentals…

that spanish depedro guy was acting like a bit of a turnip by the end of the night

but standing ovations! and an amazing version of woven birds.

BigBoysSocks  said about 2 years ago:

Took my lady who hadn't heard much of their stuff and she hasn't stopped talking about it. It really was a great gig.

SpringRain  said about 1 year ago:

I've been listening to john convertino's solo record lately, for the first time in ages. I think it's better than calexico
