LoadMyRig  said about 2 years ago:

''extreme weather in vic expected mon night and tues. high wind and fire risk. listen to local abc radio for emergency updates. do not reply to this msg.''

LoadMyRig  said about 2 years ago:

i mean this is awesome and scary.

how do they compile this database of numbers?

do they sent it to the ISPs and they pass it on?

MissAustralia2003  said about 2 years ago:

please refer to bushfires thread.

clarebear  said about 2 years ago:

Yep, just got mine. I think the individual mobile phone companies are sending them out on behalf of vic police

MichaelDudikoff  said about 2 years ago:

I got this directly after I received a text message from Hobbs.

I presumed they were linked.

LoadMyRig  said about 2 years ago:

i'm interested in the coverage that particular strategy just managed to get.

check in here if you received it.

anonymous  said about 2 years ago:

..and i'd just texted carl williams.

wipey  said about 2 years ago:

I thought msot of Vic has rain tomorrow

clarebear  said about 2 years ago:

I think everyone on optus probably just got it. I'm sure Telstra/Vodaphone customers will get there's soon.

MissAustralia2003  said about 2 years ago:

do loadmyrig, reidthemighty, clarebear, hobbs, and michaeldudikoff have criminal records? Is the text only going to crims? Are they the only ones they want to be saved?

jimmy hutspah  said about 2 years ago:

i havent got one. does this mean they don't care about me? do they even know I exist? damn you coppers.

JudyDickslap  said about 2 years ago:

I got one too.

LoadMyRig  said about 2 years ago:

the exceptions may prove to be more interesting than the inclusions.

basil seal  said about 2 years ago:

i didn't get one. don't live in victoria though.

thanks for letting me clutter up the internet.

MissAustralia2003  said about 2 years ago:

any vodafone users in Victoria got one?

Hazard_Man  said about 2 years ago:

Maybe its something like . . . ''potential firebugs, we know there's good fire weather on the way, and we've got our (big brother) eyes on you!''

ratz  said about 2 years ago:

I'm Vodafone and I don't have one yet.

louis  said about 2 years ago:

filterfeed  said about 2 years ago:

everyone in my office/buidling received an email suggesting the sooner we leave the office the better as the winds will really hit around 6pm. to be honest, i think i'd rather stay at work. there's some fucking huge trees in my street...

plastic  said about 2 years ago:

plus is it actually raining near any of the fires?

link maybe ...

Modi  said about 2 years ago:

Great. A millimetre.

Anyway, I think the SMS is a good idea, as long as they don't overdo it.

Block  said about 2 years ago:

Did anyone else get a ''Christine NiXXXon- she's out of uniform, and on your mobile'' text offer today?

philip-box  said about 2 years ago:
> someone at work said their husband got a text thisarvo saying the sooner people can get > out of the city, the better ???

ABC radio was reporting some dodgy msgs going around too - might have been one of these.

Mind you, the traffic is gonna be pretty bad tonight - windy, low visibility, rain, storms, so

maybe it's sage advice.

lheard driving home that public transport was running late/ tons of cancellations and expected delays. So they were urging people who could leave earlier to do so.

anonymous  said about 2 years ago:

''remember, don't jaywalk''

astrousersasmind  said about 2 years ago:

Anyone else see this from Bruce Esplin, Victorian Emergency Services Commissioner about the text messages:

''The public have responded positively to it, and it now provides us with a rich source of information about the need for the national warning system, and I'd stress this was just using commercial available SMS,'' he said.
''It wasn't the emergency warning system. That will be more complex, stronger and better again, when we finally develop it and agree on it.''
He says the idea was to encourage people to look at their plans, and the rise in use of the emergency service websites shows it worked.
''We've had a few Tasmanians SMS back with some funny messages, but by and large, we've had a very strong take-up by the community,'' he said.

Looks like Modi's 'UNSUBSCRIBE' didn't make the grade. Outdone by Tasmanians Modi.

Modi  said about 2 years ago:

I didn't actually answer it.

Barman  said about 2 years ago:

I got one of these and I was in NSW.

I had been in Melb on Monday.

versionsporadic  said about 2 years ago:

I can't believe anyone would whinge about this. unbelievable

LoadMyRig  said about 2 years ago:

i wanna know how this proximity shit works.

people who were visiting vic got them, regardless of their non-3xxx postcode.

how does it work???

postergirl  said about 2 years ago:

Probably some kind of GPS shit.

versionsporadic  said about 2 years ago:

it doesn't work very well, which is why mobile telephony is unsuitable for an early warning system

tangy_zizzle  said about 2 years ago:

why are so many people interested??

mobile towers know which phones are connected/closest. each tower send out the message to all phones in the area. the end. basically.

LoadMyRig  said about 2 years ago:

OH SHUT UP I JUST AM OK??

versionsporadic  said about 2 years ago:

it is based on proximity to signal towers, similar to how the suburb is shown on your phone

LoadMyRig  said about 2 years ago:

thanks guys for lowering yrselves to explain it to a numbskull like me...

tangy_zizzle  said about 2 years ago:

In Impress they gave a ''backlash'' to the police, wondering how they got their number, and inferring that it was an invasion of privacy.. Idiots.

versionsporadic  said about 2 years ago:

yes
