you and dance music.

tinyman  said about 2 years ago  or at  11:25AM on Wednesday, November 1 2006.

how are you and dance music getting along?

do you go to dance music parties and dance till you can't stay upright?

do you have a few mixed cds?

or do you think techno just isn't music?

can't tell the difference between trance and drum'n bass?

think dance music is the dumbest thing ever?

personally, i'd say my music collection is 70% electronic, 30% rock.

great.

yes.

no, it's some of the most vital music created in the last couple of decades.

very easy to tell.

a good proportion of it is smarter than the people who deride it.

can't bring myself round to baile funk though. it's too faddish.

blake3030  said about 2 years ago:

I've been listening to lots of dancey type stuff.

i'm not into long repetitve stuff though.

I like people that use the sounds of dance music to create catchy 'songs'. I like songs. I like structure.

Lo-Fi Fnk, Muscles, The Junior Boys, The Knife, etc. These bands are doing it well.

sister  said about 2 years ago:

well i like to dance.........................................50s and 60s r & b and 1970s disco mainly.

anonymous  said about 2 years ago:

probably should've titled the thread "you and electronic music"

hmmm....

tinyman  said about 2 years ago:

maybe, but i was also hoping for people to come out of the closet not just with songs that kidda were electronic in nature (kraftwerk, the knife), but also the more hardcore, ish-ish-ish-ish-ker-DOOF-DOOF-DOOF-DOOF-ekDOOF-DOOF-DOOF-ekDOOF-DOOF-DOOF- kinda music as well

Godzilla  said about 2 years ago:

i still play Leftfield, Prodigy and Underworld but they are all pretty dated by now.

yeah..... not keen.

I used to like drum n bass back around 2000/2001.... but it all jsut gets too samey. Could never listen to it for more than 30 mins.

tinyman  said about 2 years ago:

to my ears, Underworld is timeless. have you got into the Riverrun series?

tinyman  said about 2 years ago:

and in drum'n bass, i love downloading the Hospital Records podcast because the guy loves digging up some leftfield, original drum'n bass. some melodic stuff too.

Godzilla  said about 2 years ago:

I have the Everything Everything live album, a 7" single of Underneath the radar, and about 5 versions of Born Slippy on different compilations

PaulsGrandfather  said about 2 years ago:

how are you and dance music getting along? Not very well, I used all the hott water and now he's pissed.

do you go to dance music parties and dance till you can't stay upright? Nope.

do you have a few mixed cds? I have plenty of mixcds, none of them dance.

or do you think techno just isn't music? Techno is not music. It is the sound of Satan farting.

can't tell the difference between trance and drum'n bass? One's shit and annoying and one's shit and boring?

think dance music is the dumbest thing ever? Not ever. I mean, asbestos was pretty dumb.

tinyman  said about 2 years ago:

on the official underworld website, www.underworldlive.com , there's been a series of 5pound downloads called Riverrun where they've got half hour of new material mixed together in each one. Lovely Broken Thing is more the typcial underworld of old, the other downloads sees them pushing their more experimental, down tempo areas. look around that website and you may also find a massive, 3 hour mp3 of a fantastic radio jam they did.

KevinArnold  said about 2 years ago:

I am forced to going to dance clubs with mates because thats what they like.

To me there's good and there's bad. The bad is rotten the good is well good.

I will get up and dance but ply me with alcohol and i'l dance to a guy playign a piano accordion.

I think just about any musiccal form is valid and enjoyable.

blake3030  said about 2 years ago:

You are your mates' bitch, Kev.

KevinArnold  said about 2 years ago:

Correct.

triptolemus  said about 2 years ago:

Dance music is GREAT! How else could talentless hack computer geeks like myself break into the "music" industry?

I'm sure there's good dance music, but I've never been much of a dancer & I don't take nearly enough pills to really enjoy it.

Call me old fashioned, but I like hearing music played by people, on instruments...not programmed into a computer. It's not just dance music though...I have issues with heaps of "bands" lately for the same reason... ie. They can't actually play their instruments very well. When I was a lad...you learned how to play FIRST.

New stage added as The Hot BBQ moves to Summadayze! Future Entertainment has today announced that New Years Day event, The Hot Barbeque, will move to neighboring event, Summadayze, hosted at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl.

A scaled down Hot Barbeque will utilize a large fence line extension area at the venue – offering 2 new stages.

Future Entertainment has said that the current economic climate has hit people hard – and rather than push two events this year, it’s in everyone’s best interests to consolidate.

The addition of this area is great news for Summadayze ticket holders who will get access to additional stages and another 8 international DJ’s for no extra cost. Hot Barbeque ticket holders will also benefit by getting access to a previously sold out event with an amazing talent line up and extended hours of operation.

The multi award winning Summadayze is Future Entertainment’s most successful event and is Melbourne’s favourite electronic music festival. Despite this event selling out months ago, there is additional space and reserved tickets that will now be utilised for the Hot Barbeque amalgamation.

Future Entertainment will be freeing up Summadayze tickets originally put aside for an anti ticket scalping campaign, so that Hot Barbeque ticket holders can be looked after.

Hot Barbeque ticket holders will have the option of a full refund (including the booking fee if purchased through Ticketmaster), or an upgraded ticket to Summadayze. This ticket upgrade also includes a VIP pass.

Parton comfort will not be compromised with the event merge.

The Hot Barbeque stages at Summadayze will feature the cream of The Hot Barbeque line up, including:

Boys Noize
Busy P
Carl Craig
DJ Mehdi
Radioslave
Oliver Huntemann
Steve Aoki and more…

Stay tuned to www.futureentertainment.com.au for further line up announcements.

Tickets:
Hot Barbeque ticket purchasers will have the option to get a full refund through their place of purchase (this includes the booking fee if purchased through Ticketmaster), or upgrade their ticket to a Summadayze ticket, costing an additional $50 + BF and service charges. This includes a VIP pass with access to both Hot Barbeque stages.

Please note that the Summadayze ticket upgrade offer is limited and expires at 6pm next Wednesday December 17.

If you are a ticket holder please email enquiries@futureentertainment.com.au and we can advise you of the next step.

chik-unn-unn.. chik-unn-unn.. chik-unn-unn.. chik-check-one

Someone pulled out their Essential Mix from Pete Tong's radio show in 1994 at a recent shindig and my golly gosh did it bang hard.

ladyinred  said 23 days ago:

I remember discovering that album in a restaurant. great moment.

2 weekends ago i got to see a genius at work.
Luciano and Robert Babicz gig at Brown Alley on the 5th. It was fucking rammed. I turned up and there was two lines both going around the Alley. Crazy shit. I haven't seen that. Inside it was more crazy. A rather weird crowd tbh. So many hangbag girls who were 'totally in love with Luciano'. Even then with so many chicks it still was a damn sausage factory.

Didn't stay at all for Luciano's set even to hear ''Orange Mistake''. The crowd was impatient, rude and fucking pushy. You couldn't even dance downstairs unless you were in the corner near the bar being blocked by a pillar. I found solace upstairs with Lance Harrison and Dave Pham. They really chugged things along nicely for the lead up to a very much anticipated liveset by thee Robert Babicz. By the time he started the top floor was already packed but i managed to pinch butts and wink my way through to the front (best trick ever!). I'm so glad i got to catch him. He smashed it. It's great seeing a artist feed off the crowd and he delivered a set quite similar to the Teadrops set thats floating around the internets. Even though this is ultra predictable Dark Flower was highlight. 6am came around and the huge sweaty crowd were begging him for one more even though he was meant to have finished at 5:30. I skedaddled with the aim to make my flight to sydney that morning.

With a long day at homebake, i managed to troop over to Chinese Laundry that night to get me a second dose of some Babicz. The cave is kinda a funny name for the downstairs area but i can see it. The industrial fans were a lifesaver because once again it was sweat in the eyes and a non-stop dance in your own world. Managed to catch up with some friends there and meet some friendly randoms. The set wasn't as intense as Melbourne's gig (maybe it was the atmosphere that made it more intense?) but it was quite similar. To the following DJ's credit he stayed off turning up for a bit so everyone could be treated to some babicz gold.

I left dazed, dazed enough to turn up at F4 in Melbourne the following Thursday night to see the encore performance. This was where Babicz in June 2007 made his debut performance in Melbs. From what they say, it was the inspiration for a track he created not long after that visit called ''A Night In Melbourne''. I could NOT miss this... ahahaha JOEY PERONNE was a guest vocalist for one of his tracks on the night!!! It wasn't the best song tbh but it was still a wicked night considering the promoters got this gig up and running within one day!! For a Thursday night it was insane.

I kinda felt odd fangirling it up at the front with the rest of the rather male dominant crowd but me and the techno were good friends that night. It was great because it was a journey between genres during this set. At times is got so soundscapey i just needed to be on a loungechair with a G+T in hand relaxing.

To his credit I don't think i would have gone to three of his gigs to begin with... but each time you took something new away.

Ahhh top bloke. I hope he comes out annually now.

did i write too much?

onamission  said 23 days ago:

God damn woman I haven't been capable of that kind of schedule since about 1996! Respek is due!

Main room at Chinese Laundry's normally chock full of lagered and alcopopped dorks in my experience but the Cave makes the best of it so glad you enjoyed. Keen to check Boys Noize, A Guy Called Gerald & Carl Craig over the festive hiatus..

tinyman  said 19 days ago:

i'm going.

ladyinred  said 17 days ago:

Kinda of agree with you frank, Brown Alley as a venue has lots of access areas. When they appear to have gone beyond capacity that's when it can be a nightmare. Only aware of two times that would have happened. The Luciano/Babicz gig recently and a girltalk one a year or two back. I went last Friday to a xmas party called Clarity (Newish night officially started about a year ago) which is run by a bunch of mates and it was quite busy but comfortable.

C2 would be awesomo if he played with Jonson. I recall something about that but i thought it was pulled? Been listening to his Sessions CDs and looking forward to the shimmy action in January. hoefully i'll catch you there tig.

Moo-core: no Good Vibes for me.
