''under the milky way'' query (the church)

mathieson  said about 3 years ago  or at  3:21PM on Monday, February 23 2009 in music

Is the solo the product of bagpipes, an E-Bow or a synth?

I always assumed the former, but there appears to be different answers floating around.

LoadMyRig  said about 3 years ago:

def too electronic sounding for a bagpipeski.

rockin.robin  said about 3 years ago:

it'll be a dx-7 or some shit. if it aint a sample of long way to the top if you wanna rock n roll

looch  said about 3 years ago:

Its definitely an e-bow

rockin.robin  said about 3 years ago:

was the ebow invented in 1981? dunno..probably..whatever..

looch  said about 3 years ago:

dunno - but it would have been in 1988 when this was released.

rockin.robin  said about 3 years ago:

really? 1988..why have I always thought this song was older? what was the early hit..unguarded moment'? anything else..oh god. 1988?..gee whizz the mind is getting lamer..sorry.

yeah then e-bow for sure.

looch  said about 3 years ago:

hmmm - 1981 would have been ''Almost with you'' ... 1980 was Unguarded Moment

tantalized is best, anyway

elle-zo  said about 3 years ago:

what? i always thought it was bagpipes - wasn't it famously the first use of bagpipes in an aussie song or something?

__v  said about 3 years ago:

wasn't it famously the first use of bagpipes in an aussie song or something?

hm

looch  said about 3 years ago:

nup.... its e-bow. This came direct from the person who played it

elle-zo  said about 3 years ago:

maybe you could just send Kilbey a msg via his BLOG

the time being

sum1  said about 3 years ago:

Don't sound like no e-bow to me. Whatever it is is backmasked.

goldfoot  said about 3 years ago:

hm, indeed

sting-bono  said about 3 years ago:

the layers under the e-bow sound like bagpipes. strange solo to a great song.

elle-zo  said about 3 years ago:

oh, that's right - the first SINCE ac/dc.

my apologies.

__v  said about 3 years ago:

Curse my pedantry for making me post this, but Wouldn't You're The Voice also sneak into this notional oz-bagpipe-free-zone?

goldfoot  said about 3 years ago:

Yep

iamthewalrus  said about 3 years ago:

From Wiki: Unlike most of its songs, ''Under the Milky Way'' featured primarily acoustic guitar driven by a 12-string guitar melody and a solo that, although sounding like a bagpipe, was actually an EBow.

crackwhore  said about 3 years ago:

strangely enough, a song about heroin from the humourless mr kilbey.

mathieson  said about 3 years ago:

Another debate: I always thought it was a dope/hash song - the Milky Way was a joint in Amsterdam.

annehelena  said about 3 years ago:

Makes me think of montyclift every time I hear it.

Neither of us knows why.

rockin.robin  said about 3 years ago:

can someone send me a bag of good heads or some hash? ahhh HASH!

thenewmeatloaf  said about 3 years ago:

the killer bee has denied that it's about scoring or doing smack at the Melkweg. Hasn't exactly denied that it's about smack, though.

crackwhore  said about 3 years ago:

that's good enough for me meaty.

As their 25th anniversary approaches art-rock band the church, having recently returned from international touring, are continuing to push the boundaries of what a rock band should be. Rather than becoming a tame bloated parody of what they used to be, or plodding out insipid greatest hits, the band have spent the last five years making music as they desire, without regard for current trend, trusting in the traditional virtues of talent, chemistry and good taste to guide them. Voted amongst readers of Melbourne newspaper, The Age, which garnered 37,000 votes, saw the majority of votes choose ''Under the Milky Way'' as the best Australian song of the last 21 years! Now embarking on their ''So Love May Find Us'' Tour, these Australian music icons have just announced a special stripped back intimate show at the Workers Club as part of the Sundae Workers Series #3 on December 6th! They will be joined by Alexander & Thom of the critically acclaimed Oh Mercy in a special duo set. Oh Mercy have recently been recognized with a host of new music awards including Album of the Month by the Age.

**Sunday, December 6th

Doors: 4pm

Tickets: at Moshtix: http://www.moshtix.com.au/event.aspx?id=32189&ref=moshtix**
