Can people please post rumors of other acts, recomendations etc.

I've got Dylan Moran tix already but am also thinking these will be the goodens:

Danny Bhoy

Dylan Moran, What It Is

Arj Barker

Jeff Green

Fiona O'Loughlin

Nina Conti

Also, if people know of small venues doing unknown acts, ones that won't show up in a Melb Comedy Fest search - post them.

I wish Demetri Martin would hurry up and come back already.

saucyjack  said about 1 year ago:

i was about to say that I miss the MICF, but after looking at that list on their site, I'm not so sure.

Maybe check out Mike Wilmot. He was pretty good a few years back.

juicenewton*  said about 1 year ago:

Any thoughts on Tim Minchin? I've been meaning to see him for ages...

its still a good time to be wandering around the city, so much action and adventure going on.

yeah, true. the town hall bar and the festival club used to be my second (and third) homes back when i used to get a MICF media pass.

I love Demetri Martin. He has me in tears. I want Glen Wool to come back. He was fantastic.

Kez  said about 1 year ago:

Does Cheech And Chong coincide with this?

russiancaravan  said about 1 year ago:

Tim Minchin's first show was amazing, the second year not so much. And since then he's been recycling material. But I think he's got an all-new show.

tangy_zizzle  said about 1 year ago:

I'd rather cut my eyes out and sandpaper off my ears than see Minchin. But that's me.

Agreed, but he's too busy working on his TV series and movies and being famous.

I wouldn't be upset if they brought out the Comedians of Comedy, or at least Maria Bamford. I'd be falling over myself if they bring out David Cross. Mark Watson always puts on a good show, so I'll probably see him again. I wish they'd stop cycling through the same internationals, surely everyone who wanted to see Stephen K Amos has seen him by now.

Mental notes Mark Watson

love the comedy festival, ill be checkin back to this thread often

Collaterly_Sisters  said about 1 year ago:

Mmm. A lot of the same old faces so far. It's all about Trades Hall in my opinion. I'd love to see Tim and Eric do their live roadshow thing. Probably won't happen.

juicenewton*  said about 1 year ago:

That might make a good act for the Gala Tangy.

the other fact is, 50% of people probably won't like him anyway, so take those odds if you want.

philip-box  said about 10 months ago:

Brendan Burns is EXCELLENT. So worth going to see.

Kez  said about 10 months ago:

from that article:

''Commercial stations need to capture as much of an audience as they possibly can — grannies have got to like you, mums, dads, girls have to want to f--- you, guys to be your mate.''

So my guess is the 'you' is male? Or they're seeing a niche market for Celia that her talk of boyfriends is fogging...

Kez  said about 10 months ago:

I got a laugh out of this show's title, as reported:

''I Can't Sleep with David O'Doherty''

You can't? Good. More for me! Yoohoo, David, I'm over here!

soula  said about 10 months ago:

off to see kitson tonight. and andrew and lawrence tomorrow night. hope it's all good.

i've heard burns is supposed to be good. don't think i have time to see him. damn homework.

team ham sandwich  said about 10 months ago:

Went and saw Heath McIvors ''Randys postcards from puragtory'' tonight. Pretty fucking good.

gabbo  said about 10 months ago:

seeing ben lomas on saturday night.

hope i get a chance to see andrew and lawrence's time travel symposium thing.

Lilo  said about 10 months ago:

I saw Sam Simmons tonight.. not so good. There were some funny bits, but on the whole, i'm disappointed - especially since the Age gave him 5 stars.

I never thought I'd say this, but there CAN be too much hip-gyration and pelvic thrusting in one show.

Collaterly_Sisters  said about 10 months ago:

I suppose Simmons is an acquired taste, as I thought he was a highlight this year, even if he wasn't as gleefully nutty as his show last year. I honestly didn't notice any excessive gyrations in the show, or if so, there weren't enough to distract me.

Judith Lucy tonight, The Consumption tomorrow and Vigilantelope to round off my fest. I wanted to catch the 1000 Years of German Humour show on Saturday (definitely not one I would've picked at the start given the show description) but I've heard great things, and it's up for a Barry - but appears to be sold out for the rest of the week. Blast.

Also Suitcase Royale were fantastic. This was about the only time I'd forgive performers for having such utter disdain for maintaining coherent story logic and veering so wildly off subject for 70% of the performance. The Boosh have a lot to answer for this festival... Still heaps of fun though.

Pajama Men are very good!

postergirl  said about 10 months ago:

I kind of don't really wanna go to Arj tonight … I'd rather be at home in pyjamas watching Mad Men and Q&A.

TimChuma  said about 10 months ago:

Photos from the Life on Mars? benefit night here

I didn't know who was going to be on the line up either.

Morris Iemma  said about 10 months ago:

The funny thing about comediens is most of em aren't funny. But some of them make me laugh anyway.

Collaterly_Sisters  said about 10 months ago:

Wow. Busy month. Did anyone else happen to catch a young troupe at Trades called Vigilantelope? I went in knowing nothing and was preparing myself for the possibility it could be patchy and undergraduate. I came out thinking this could well have been the best show of the festival (that I'd seen anyway). And I caught the Barry winners (The Pajama Men) on the first night of the fest and was convinced there was no way anything could top them this year. I think I was proven wrong on the final night. Astonishing, face-hurtingly hilarious, utterly ridiculous (while still maintaining a coherent story - a problem that so many other acts with absurdist leanings struggle with), amazing writing and even better formation dancing. Where the hell did these kids come from? It's probably not a big call to predict they'll have their own ABC/SBS show within two years, which is slightly jealousy-inducing.

postergirl  said about 10 months ago:

Arj wasn't very funny.

But at least he's hott.

tangy_zizzle  said about 10 months ago:

so who won the various awards?

anonymous  said about 10 months ago:

pajama men won the barry.

anonymous  said about 10 months ago:

• The Age Critics’ Award
2009 Winner: Celia Pacquola - Am I Strange?

• The Melbourne Airport Best Newcomer Award: For the best newcomer at the Festival - the winner jets off to either experience the Brighton Comedy Festival or the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in the UK.
2009 Winner: Tom Ballard – Is What He Is

• The Directors’ Choice Award: Awarded by the Comedy Festival Director in consultation with other visiting Festival Directors.
2009 Winner: The Bedroom Philosopher – Songs From the 86 Tram

• The Piece of Wood: The beloved (and much bitten) comics’ choice award selected by past winners and presented to a peer literally for “doing good stuff ‘n’ that”.
2009 Winner: Lawrence Mooney - Make The Girls Laugh

• The Golden Gibbo: In memory of the late, great Lynda Gibson and awarded to a local, independent show that pursues the artist’s idea more strongly than it pursues any commercial lure.
2009 Winner: The Last Tuesday Society – The List Operators

~NipplesAhoy~  said about 10 months ago:

I agree with everything that tangyz said about Brendon Burns earlier in this thread.

I was initially concerned that I might be disappointed by his show, but it was just amazingly funny. I was crying with laughter for almost the entire performance from the moment he walked onstage. He is definitely my newest comedy crush!

All the people who didn't bother to go and see him really missed out big time.

Collaterly_Sisters  said about 10 months ago:

I'm glad The List Operators won the Gibbo as they're talented chaps and worked pretty hard during the fest, with their own show, kids shows and the Last Tuesday shenanigans.
