hey, my band's heading down to play in hobart in a few weeks and we thought we might do a smaller show down there as well.
any suggestions? small, quiet, folky?

anyone...?

karencarpenter  said about 3 years ago:

where are you playing so far?

the brisbane hotel have free accom if you want to play there, don't know if its small, quiet and folky exactly, but it might work somehow... in the front front bar perhaps...

are they still doing gigs at the trout in north hobart? that might be ok.

100sand1000s  said about 3 years ago:

we're playing at the republic bar.

JunkiePhil  said about 3 years ago:

They used to do gigs of a friday night at the front of the peacock theatre in salamanca, that would be perfect for folky stuff.
Republic is the main one for folky quieter stuff.
Brisbane is more smelly rock.

100sand1000s  said about 3 years ago:

peacock theatre sounds good. not too big though?

JunkiePhil  said about 3 years ago:

It's not even a venue really, it's a cafe out the front of the theatre, not even sure if they do gigs there any more.
I'll see if I can get you the name.
I used to see a mate play there every friday about 5 years back.

JunkiePhil  said about 3 years ago:

Can't figure out what it was called sorry.
Might be better off asking on the Naked Dwaf forum.
Thats were the tas-man's be at.

what about the alley cat?

Pip.  said about 3 years ago:

Alley cat might be right up your, err, alley. It caters to the more folksy, rootsy type of thing than the Brisbane does.

Also the Lark Distillery might be a good one.

Pip.  said about 3 years ago:

Oh and I'm sorry you are playing at the republic. Bleugh.

kickcat  said about 3 years ago:

the republics not that bad...especially when theres a good band on!

kickcat  said about 3 years ago:

oh i missed the quiet folky bit..... head alleycat.. or talk too butterscoth pony re the lark, and cindi tunes ( a reg gig)

Any newer news?

For experimental stuff? Not too fussed about crowd, just somewhere where I wouldn't get glassed for not playing AC/DC

Pip.  said about 1 year ago:

The Brisbane Hotel
The Alley Cat

Or find someone to talk to who is interested in putting you on a bill in someone's house, or the Peacock Theatre, or another venue that is not a pub. That's where it's at in Hobart.

SGH  said about 1 year ago:

Cheers Pip.

Just got those two recommendations from someone else too!

If any Hobartian is reading, I sound a bit like this: http://automating.bandcamp.com/ and am keen for a 22nd January show (and maybe 21 and 23 depending on what time WIRE is playing at MONA)

Pip.  said about 1 year ago:

I would recommend making your presence known on the The Dwarf. They are a tough crowd over there, but if someone likes your music you might find some friends to help you out.

Contact these guys too: http://www.myspace.com/hobartmusicyeah

and these guys: http://www.clonesandclones.com/

Having a good time in Hobart is all about having the right contacts. Which may sound like a wank, but it's true.

SGH  said about 1 year ago:

Cheers again Pip. Will send some messages around tonight.

Oh dear, it's never fun being the new guy on a message board, esp. when your first post is going to be an impassioned plea for help.
