Coolsie pub in Melbourne's Western suburbs

feralmedia  said about 3 years ago  or at  4:32PM on Friday, January 23 2009 in stupidity

Let's make it happen! Steps:

  1. Nominate pub
  2. Invite your coolest, most zeitgeisty homies to get down on it
  3. Someone eventually gets to DJ
  4. ?
  5. Profit

You forgot ''introduce new food menu''

feralmedia  said about 3 years ago:

Tapas is not a food menu, Block. Tapas is a way of loife.

outerspacextrapnel  said about 3 years ago:

Don't forget to redo the inside to make it look older, but more expensive.

CryMeARiver  said about 3 years ago:

I nominate Hardimans in Kensington for the following reasons:
1. It's my closest pub
2. It's full of cashed-up bogans

louis  said about 3 years ago:

the food guff has been done to the station hotel in foots already (and very bloody nice it is too). i reckon if you want to make a cool pub, a gig pub, you either have no food except bags of twisties or you stick with the existing parma/burgers/bangers list.

poprocks96  said about 3 years ago:

CryMe, I have always wondered who goes there. That place has sooo much potential. I have never been inside though.

feralmedia  said about 3 years ago:

Kensington's pretty much North Melbourne, though, and it's already yuppied up.

CryMeARiver  said about 3 years ago:

CryMe, I have always wondered who goes there. I've never been inside either, I imagine a lot of guys in polos and women wearing exercise clothing and large sunglasses.

CryMeARiver  said about 3 years ago:

Argh, back to the formatting thread I go...

poprocks96  said about 3 years ago:

Have you been to Vodka Locka a bit further down the way?

CryMeARiver  said about 3 years ago:

Nope, only just moved there recently. I hear that there's a decent bar that does cheap pizza on Monday nights which I will also investigate soon.

poprocks96  said about 3 years ago:

Where is that?? I have been here for two years and never had a drink in the area...haha.

CryMeARiver  said about 3 years ago:

Tonik Bar, looks a bit wanky but apparently has Mountain Goat and Little Creatures on tap.

feralmedia  said about 3 years ago:

Kensington is a fifteen minute walk to North Melbourne!

feralmedia  said about 3 years ago:

...Fail, huh?

CryMeARiver  said about 2 years ago:

White Rabbit record bar.
Looks like they do nice brekkies as well as having beers and a courtyard.

juicenewton*  said about 2 years ago:

Too much coolsie and not enough west.

You could buy this place and do it in style fezzel....

mrs watson  said about 2 years ago:

Tonik is rubbish.

CryMeARiver  said about 2 years ago:

Tonik is rubbish.

Had a beer there on Saturday night, quiet as...Kensington isn't a late night party suburb that's for sure.

looby loo  said about 2 years ago:

Hotel Spottiswoode gets my vote.

If they can kick the classy laydeez out of the Union in Brunswick, they can do it here too.

feralmedia  said about 2 years ago:

I have highlighted your errors and submitted them for your consideration!

I think The Junction Hotel in Newport has attempted to install some cool factor (some hipster hiphop DJs etc putting nights on) but ultimately it hasn't really worked..

Violet  said about 2 years ago:

I support this idea.

However, I was at an exhibition opening the other night and as I pushed my way through the crowd I heard someone saying that she was about to open a bar in Footscray. Hmm.

juicenewton*  said about 2 years ago:

ooooohhhhh violet I wonder where?

feralmedia  said about 2 years ago:

Still nothing, eh?

juicenewton*  said about 2 years ago:

settle in fez, I've been waiting 8 years.

feralmedia  said about 2 years ago:

Oh well. If you know anyone who wants to live in the nice ol' West, drop me a line.

CryMeARiver  said about 2 years ago:

Yeah, breakfast at White Rabbit was total disappointment...maybe ok as a bar but i'm not sure i'll go back.

untold/animals  said about 2 years ago:

No go eh?

CryMeARiver  said about 2 years ago:

No go eh?

If you are talking about my White Rabbit experience then no. Sadly my brekkie was a) tiny b) cold and c) about 45 minutes later than I would have liked.

Arse as a bar

CryMeARiver  said about 1 year ago:

Soon to be making the move from Kensington all the way over to Flemington.
Anyone know of anywhere decent to have a beer? Seems to be the two Irish pubs and that's about it.

SGH  said about 1 year ago:

Well, I'm just moving out of there but I recommend:

Flemington/Kensington RSL. Just down from the Quiet Man. Seriously. It's also got a championship size snooker table you can play for twenty cents!

The bums that gather around the the monument on the corner of Racecourse Road and Bellair street always have lots of VB and ingenious methods of keeping it cold.

Other than that usually trek to North Melb Town Hall Hotel or Spewdence.

The cleanskin wine joint on Macaulay is getting some good beers lately.

CryMeARiver  said about 1 year ago:

And the two guys who work at that cleanskin place are characters too.
Thanks for the advice, i'll check out the RSL.

Ricko  said about 1 year ago:

Welcome to my hood. Im reasonably new to the area, so this advice is useful.

Tell me more about cleanskins... is it a wine bar of sorts?

Awesome

Block  said about 1 year ago:

Flemington Bowls Club.
Ask for Dave, the club secretary.

SGH  said about 1 year ago:

^^^Block with the good oil. My gf was there on Sunday for a friend's birthday, had good things to say.

The cleanskins joint is just a liquor shop, but they've steadily been increasing the variety of good beers in stock, now it's better than the half-arsed wine. Not actually a place to drink.

toadphoney, the main guy even looks like Kenny Rogers with long hair.

My mate reckons the Doot used to be good back in the day just to grab a beer, unfortunately that was some day ago.

Oh, the new Taco Bell just opened on Macaulay near K'ton station, half price margaritas Fri/Sat 5-7pm.

feralmedia  said about 1 year ago:

I don't suppose anybody's able to feed my cats tomorrow and Saturday in Newport...?

feralmedia  said about 1 year ago:

:(

untold/animals  said about 1 year ago:

Just going out on a limb here - has anybody got ideas for where I might print out a PDF in Melbourne's Western suburbs today? Snap and Kwik Kopy are closed.

moo-core  said about 1 year ago:

At my house. But i'm not there.
But srsly, newsagents?

untold/animals  said about 1 year ago:

Are they open? I figured they'd photocopy but as for printing from a USB/link, not so sure. Guess I'll call around!

juicenewton*  said about 1 year ago:

Officejerks on Willy rd?

untold/animals  said about 1 year ago:

Oh! Great suggestion, don't know why that never crossed my mind.

untold/animals  said about 1 year ago:

Funny that this 'coolsie pub' business has been hijacked by my printing request, too, given that there are still not any coolsie pubs in the West. Haha.

juicenewton*  said about 1 year ago:

Yes I heard there's a new sign being put up near the station underpass - Footscray non-gentrified since 1823.

In other news, I heartily recommend the lamb skewers at Dumplings and More. The Chinese owners apparently hail from somewhere close to Uyghur territory so have some good mid-east flavours coming through on the menu.

untold/animals  said about 1 year ago:

You would have been to the Station a few times, surely? Is it any good? Seems pretty Fine Dining from my drive-by appraisal.

juicenewton*  said about 1 year ago:

Only once or twice and a while ago at that. But yes - very blokey tasty, massive steaks, rich food. Can't recall prices - guessing in the 30s for a main?

untold/animals  said about 1 year ago:

Cripes! Been to the Commercial lately? Carpark always seems full well into the night, but I can't bring myself to go in. A drink at Corner Shop is still the closest there is to a coolsie experience in the inner West.

juicenewton*  said about 1 year ago:

The Commercial? Avoid avoid avoid! Been no good since the old guy sold up and moved his family out 5 years ago. Was taken over by some dick who pulled down all the vines in the beer garden and takes a cover charge so people can listen to him spin bad doof all night.

Try a drink at the Seddon Wine Store - excellent booze and a coolsie rating of 10. Although all the coolsie westies are more your Slap type young families, than uni-going single speed riders.
I still have hopes for the Buckingham, if there was ever a venue for a Standard-like hotel in the west - the Buck is it.

untold/animals  said about 1 year ago:

Seddon Wine Store. Interesting! I'll check it out some time. The Commercial I shall continue to avoid, then. Love that you reference The Slap! Haha. I'll think of them brutally fucking in their kitchens, I guess. : /

juicenewton*  said about 1 year ago:

FUUUUUUUUCCCKKKKKKKK.

This Buckingham could be The Standard of Footscray, but no, over a 100 years of drinking history about to get buried by another lot of fucking poorly build apartments.

This is Bullshit.

caseyrice  said about 1 year ago:

bump this thread. where's the place? station is great but $40 steaks arent my everyday fare...
