Has Nick Cave lost it or is he getting better?

tammy539  said about 3 years ago  or at  1:50PM on Thursday, January 15 2009 in music

Saw the Bad Seeds last week and couldn't help thinking Sir Nick was a little slow. Still a massive show but just a bit 'by numbers' for me.

songs better voice gone toilet.

djbollocks  said about 3 years ago:

I dunno but my Mum reckons that he struggles with his faith (whatever that means).

tammy539  said about 3 years ago:

He needs to kill the 'tash and grow his lovely hair back! The hair ! That's it!

can crusherman  said about 3 years ago:

What stuff did he play at ATP? Mainly new or a bit of everything?

slothman  said about 3 years ago:

he gets away with some pretty mediocre shit nowadays. his best 10% of stuff (new or old) is so much better than the remaining 90%

LoadMyRig  said about 3 years ago:

you people are insane.

dig lazarus dig is fantastic.

nick is not a 21 year old junkie any more in case you haven't noticed.

luke  said about 3 years ago:

I think he has a greater concept of quality control then Robert Smith does.

LAMF  said about 3 years ago:

Probably about 40% Dig Lazarus Dig, and 60% greatest hits. But most of the older songs seem to have been rearranged. Nick is now playing guitar, with Mick Harvey doing less guitar and more percussion and keys. Jim Sclavunos and Thomas Wydler seem to have swapped roles, with Thomas handling more of the percussion duties, and Jim taking over more of the drumming.

djbollocks  said about 3 years ago:

Dig Lazarus Dig is the worst album he has ever made (even worse the Nocturama).

LoadMyRig  said about 3 years ago:

oh fuck off djprecious.

:)

djbollocks  said about 3 years ago:

Hey that's just my opinion, and I'm a big fan of the guy.

shaun  said about 3 years ago:

i'm not sure. i think i'm just burnt out on Nick Cave. maybe if I listen to DLD in a few years and ignore everything he does until then, i'll grow to enjoy it.

Modi  said about 3 years ago:

No, he's a fifty year old fuckstick.

Did Lazarus Dig is a polished turd

anok  said about 3 years ago:

the visuals for the the title track were cutting edge.

aquatic  said about 3 years ago:

I was watching 'The assassination of Jesse James,' last night and I found the soundtrack work Nick Cave & Warren Ellis made was incredible.. the difference the music makes in the film is unbelievable.
Having said that I think I have a problem with nick cave's singing - so contrived

manklejin  said about 3 years ago:

he once walked off stage after being told he couldn't smoke. but that's no reflection on his music. nor a typical performance. it's nothing, really.

Modi  said about 3 years ago:

Ha, I can't even spell it, because it makes me crazy.

elle-zo  said about 3 years ago:

needs more frontman. lose the guitar schtick please!

will always love Nick, but the glory days of the Bad Seeds are over. The stage set up - Grinderman (Jim Sclavunos, Martyn P, Warren, Nick) on one side, and Mick, Thomas, Conway on the other side spoke volumes, I thought.

Song selections on this tour were largely weak, too. 'Nature Boy' from Abbatoir Blues?! Nah...

The Music or The Man?
I used to get wacked to 'Sing Happy Birthday, Blow Out The Candles' and then I'd blow in time with the song and get a head spin.

King_Rat  said about 2 years ago:

haha the man. Ask O Brother Where art thou. He has the digits.

JunkiePhil  said about 2 years ago:

Pretty sure I met him when I was a kid.

JunkiePhil  said about 2 years ago:

My brother that is, not The Man

CaptainFez  said about 2 years ago:

Apparantley he was very grumpy.

Cunt's got a rep to uphold, innit?

__v  said about 2 years ago:

first post-mick harvey shows in the next couple of days

i am fairly keen to see some ropey footage on youtube, i must say

CaptainFez  said about 2 years ago:

That's more for Ed than Nick?

__v  said about 2 years ago:

yeah, to see how the band sounds i suppose, and interested to hear if there is any conspicuously kuepperesque contribution

or maybe some unusual songs dredged out of the back catalogue instead of fuckin red right hand and deanna again

or a saints cover

or something

FrankieTeardrop  said about 2 years ago:

If they ever get around to writing together, I predict it will be a lot better than Dig, Lazarus. Although that wouldn't be hard...

Gorn  said about 2 years ago:

Yeah a pretty poor effort. More Conway on the next album please.

__v  said about 2 years ago:

Although since I saw it played live I feel that Night of the Lotus Eaters probably deserves a place in the pantheon...

Goodbye moustache, hello Ed!

MissAustralia2003  said about 2 years ago:

i still think there's some sort of connection that he lost the moustache at the same time as Sol Trujillo resigned......

fyi the doco sampler is here

Get Ready For Love in Stockholm. I'll pay that.

What a fucking pedigree that band has now - Triffids, Saints, Clowns, Birthday Party, Dirty Three, Teenage Jesus and the Jerks... um, Kim Salmon and STM...

If Cave had half a dick, he would have turned it down
But he's a washed up hack, now anyway.
He's the Lou Reed of Australian music.
