eddy current backlash

prince  said about 3 years ago  or at  5:14PM on Wednesday, December 24 2008 in music news

wtf??? m+n's favourite band didn't win the critics poll?

looks like the aria nom was a poison chalice.

they was robbed!

I predict the next album to drop out of the top 10 altogether when NOVA plays their next single.

Then Eddy Current get embroiled in a massive controversy on pitchfork as they brawl on stage with Fleet Foxes at Us vs Them at Roxanne.

meh. it's music, just listen to it and make up your own mind.

king loser  said about 1 year ago:

I thought Tom Hawking was a film reviewer?

king loser  said about 1 year ago:

doesn't he get it? The fact that he's even reviewing ECSR for THE VINE means that the band have/are crossing over to the squares and the masses are asses! Keep it simple stupid.

bungle  said about 1 year ago:

Seemed to be a pretty fair review to me, though he seemed awfully anxious not to offend anyone.

rigid  said about 1 year ago:

i don't get the ramones, detroit cobras and dirtbombs comparisons. do these guys just pull some random garage band names out of a hat? they must think, well they sound a bit '60s, a bit '70s and a bit modern so i'll pick a few bands from each era.

king loser  said about 1 year ago:

no probs with the jist of the review, but his feeling that the band should progress in their sound when they clearly aren't willing to/don't know how is not a negative. This whole don't make an album like your last album stuff is bunk.
don't get me wrong, I have no problem with ppl bagging out bands that are supposably untouchable, but yeah

I'm a fan, don't get me wrong, love this band, have done since way back, but I felt some what weird when at the counter of JB HiFi I see a little box of the new CD sitting there.
Just felt like, Pick up your eddy cuz album on the way out - K-mart candy rack style.
Obviously not the bands doing, and not a bad thing at all, just made me feel a bit weird seeing that.

Block  said about 1 year ago:

I thought it was great to see that.
Like when I was in JB a while back and one of the staff had put a hand-written recommendation on ''Pop Crimes''.

JunkiePhil  said about 1 year ago:

Yeah, I know it's a good thing. Just somthing about it didn't sit well with me.
I'm an idiot for going into JB in the 1st place really.
$16 for White Light / White Heat LP, slashing prices indeed.

scallywag  said about 1 year ago:

i'm told that jb hifi negotiate bulk discounts with distributors, so in effect, a band will recieve less return for a copy sold at jb than at another retailer.

Ubu  said about 1 year ago:

hi scallywag!

scallywag  said about 1 year ago:

hi ubu!

how's tricks?

Ubu  said about 1 year ago:

pretty good. beat copenhagen in fifa 2003 last night. next up valencia...i'm liking my chances. i listened to that max roach cd you burnt me the other day. it's killer, particularly in the light of most jazz (cutting a wide swath here, i know) being somewhat wanky. how are you travelling?

celluloid hero  said about 1 year ago:

i gotta say what a mammoth effort it would've been to beat those first two records. i've been listening to them a lot lately and they are a couple of the best australian records i've ever heard, if not the best. edgy opinions etc.

we've been asked before our distributor entered into such agreements. that's just us though. there is of course no industry standard, there never is, even when there is.

scallywag  said about 1 year ago:

true. and a copy sold at jb hifi is one less copies under the bed

timmydodgers  said about 1 year ago:

why does everyone have a problem with this. better eddy fucking current at jb fucking hi fi than some other top 40 shithead elsewhere. funny how a bit of attention makes those looking in the first place blush and start apologising. so fair play to them, what else should we be buying right now?

tvforcats  said about 1 year ago:

I like ''the'' eddy cuz, but does ''i've got a feeling'' sound a bit like ''in the city'' by Gerling? mainly in the verse.

memphis  said about 1 year ago:

first listen, i'm digging it, though i was slightly bummed about buying it at goner super store, where they had copies laying on the counter, and i'm pretty sure they got my pin out of the garbage can

MissAustralia2003  said about 1 year ago:

backlash? i haven't been to a public flagellation in ages, where will it be held? will the lash be leather? with or without studs? will the lasher wear a black mask and tight pants and have a bit of a beer belly and hairy chest and muscular arms but underneath the mask be a gentle giant? or be a lithe catwoman-like lady with a cape? will they be tied to a stake or a cross or will they be untied but in an enclosure so unable to escape the whip tentacles but given the appearance of having some chance of escape to add to spectator thrill? will they be shirtless or shirted? who pours alcohol on the wounds post-lashing? can it be combined with a beach party and disco?

Alex31  said about 1 year ago:

I don't think it is as good as the first two...but it is pretty bloody good. They need to cut the 7 minute tracks though - Tuning Out would be a great track if it was 4 minutes shorter.

boner m.  said about 1 year ago:

i don't get the unanimous criticism of the long tracks. ''second guessing'' is my favorite song of theirs to date, and really the only one i keep coming back to on the newie... i'd be perfectly happy if they stopped making garage rock and expanded on that kraut/organ-driven sound

NiteShok  said about 1 year ago:

I spoke with Mikey from ECSR about this thread, among other topics.

You might be aware that there is a bit of a backlash about the last album, which tends to happen with almost any band who ‘outgrows their roots’.

I read one or two reviews. I think it was a Tom Hawking review [on The Vine] and then a response to that review that someone alerted me to. To be honest, I think for a band in our position we’ve gotten amazingly far without really having a strong backlash. Even if there is a backlash on the new record, it’s sort of been pretty minute. You put out three records; someone is going to like your first record better than the new one. Plenty of people whose opinion I totally trust think this is our best record. I should just be happy that anyone likes any of our records; I don’t think the backlash is for any other reason despite the music. I don’t care. I don’t like some records. Is that all that the backlash is about? You’re probably more aware of it than I am.

For example, there’s a topic on the Mess+Noise discussion boards called “Eddy Current Backlash” which was mostly about that Tom Hawking review. It currently has 178 responses.

Okay. I’m probably just guilty of Googling my own band and reviews as anyone else. I do realise it’s not the healthiest of habits. [laughs]. I’m not taking it to heart anyway, but I don’t know; that’s fine. It wasn’t a bad review. It seemed pretty genuinely thought-out, smartly written and stuff. It’s just weird for me. People think more about our records than we actually do. That’s the only thing that’s weird to me: I don’t think we’re the type of band you need to dissect that much. “We wrote ten songs in the last year, and we recorded them. Here they are.” That’s sort of how much we think about it. It’s funny to see other people analyse it when there is - it’s like other people care about it more than we do.
