hiring movies

adamdmills  said about 3 years ago  or at  7:04PM on Monday, December 22 2008 in films

...is awesome!

but today we hired six movies (cabin fever, hostel, saw ii, saw iii, the texas chainsaw massacre 9the remake) and milo and otis) for twelve bucks.

i've never really done it before. when we were kids my dad wouldn't let us hire movies because he said they'd wreck the VCR. so i never really got into the habit.

but now i know how awesome it is, i'm gonna do it all the time!

It's awesome, but when the DVDs are scratched that sucks.

goldbuttons  said about 3 years ago:

You got ripped off! At Blockbuster you can get 8 weekly movies for $8. They have a good art house/foreign section too.

Block  said about 3 years ago:

Jesus, you country folk are a bit behind the times.
Nice mix, BTW- I can see how Milo & Otis fits into the program. More real life cruelty there than in all the others put together.

voxylady  said about 3 years ago:

I wouldn't mind doing it more often, when I go to the video store there are so many titles I don't recognise and look dull. I'd like to catch up on all the classics I missed out on the first time around and re watch my favourites.

ladyinred  said about 3 years ago:

you couldn't hire movies because they wrecked the VCR??? Isn't what a VCR is meant to be used for? Watching movies??

all that aside...

Hiring movies is awesome.

I want to watch Hamburger Hill

adamdmills  said about 3 years ago:

dad said that because the tapes were played on other people's VCRs all the time, they'd damage the heads.

eight movies for eight bucks? awesome! pity there's no blockbuster here in the middle of fucking nowhere.

kandos  said about 3 years ago:

how long do you think it will be before the last video hire store goes out of business?

my money's on a decade.

tadatadatada  said about 3 years ago:

haha. VCR aids...

Modi  said about 3 years ago:

Nah, Blockbuster is dodgy. They have an exclusion list of films they won't stock. Bloody censorship.

This reminds me, I have to take a DVD back to the store, now!

Guillermo del Torro's Orphanage is creepy as fuck, by the way.

really?
Like what?

iammark  said about 3 years ago:

Just get a proper amount of net and do it the new fashioned way

charlesincharge  said about 3 years ago:

and taping the 7.30 report. a friend wasn't allowed to watch PG movies, but they taped the cricket.

charlesincharge  said about 3 years ago:

don't ever waste your time with Quickflix (unless you already watch loads of movies).

mine don't get returned for months and months, and I'm too lazy to cancel. fortunately my credit card expired. still got zorba the greek though.

voxylady  said about 3 years ago:

Blockbuster have a limited stock fullstop.

questionmark  said about 3 years ago:

supposedly they edit the rude bits out of some films but I doubt they do it in australia. the new farm blockbuster has a porn section and a queer section. but blockbuster are still a bunch of cunce and I go to trash video instead.

Modi  said about 3 years ago:

Go in and ask for Anal necro-sluts 7 and see what they say.

questionmark  said about 3 years ago:

it's all r-rated anyway in qld, even the secks shops can't sell x.

Modi  said about 3 years ago:

Yeah, the editing thing probably doesn't happen here (possibly not anywhere, because I'm pretty sure it would be a copyright infringement) but I have heard they don't carry some movies due to their religious connections.

Personally, I just reckon they're cunce.

charlesincharge  said about 3 years ago:

hahahah video store porn. if you get off on such low-core material, you might as well just collect kmart catalogues.

Block  said about 3 years ago:

Will they say ''Hmm, we have it but it's well overdue back from a Mr. M. Odi''?

Modi  said about 3 years ago:

Hell no, I copy everything I hire. Fuck late fees.

reidthemighty  said about 3 years ago:

I rented tropic thunder last night. It was good for a laugh, but not as good as people said it was.

de.foxus  said about 3 years ago:

i haven't hired movies since my housie created our current tv-computer-foxtel-dvd beast.

though wandering around the dvd place last night, i was reminded of how many random strange movies i used to pick up for no apparent reason and actually enjoy from hire places. i should get into that again.

Modi  said about 3 years ago:

People said Tropic Thunder was good?

kabukiboy  said about 3 years ago:

haha modi - i'm the same - hire 6 movies, rip them and take them back the next day and watch them a couple of years later!

voxylady  said about 3 years ago:

I hired that out this weekend, I am planning to watch it and return it tonight.

reidthemighty  said about 3 years ago:

People said Tropic Thunder was good?

Haha, yes they did. I'm a sucker for jack Black though, he makes me laugh out loud.

LaxCharisma  said about 3 years ago:

I've got that tonight...probably watch it tomorrow. I go to our videostore mainly because they have a thing with prepaid phones that you get a free movie everytime you recharge so I basically hire one when I need phonecredit.

Dan_Crad  said about 3 years ago:

It's great if you are always up for a movie but never get around to going to the video shop and trawling through a limited selection, trying to remember what you were considering hiring, only to find it already out. It's actually 'forced' me into taking the time to watch movies, rather than bumming around on the net etc. I've watched about 100 DVDs since I joined earlier this year - bloody tops if you ask me.

clarebear  said about 2 years ago:

A brand new arthouse/cult video shop (for some reason DVD shop still doesn't sound right) has opened up around the corner from me in Hawthorn East. There's so much cool stuff in there to hire or buy and it's run by the biggest bunch of sci fi/cult film/role playing nerds you've ever seen.

The only thing I'm not sure about is having to pay a $40 cash deposit to be a member. It's apparently refundable when you want to cancel your membership but who ever cancels their video shop membership?. If they close down in a months time or something I'll be really pissed off. It also makes me wonder if they're really tight and likely to charge you a fortune if your DVD is back a day late or something.

adamdmills  said about 2 years ago:

that sounds like bullshit, clarebear.

now that mrs adm works at video ezy, we can hire movies for free. it's even more awesome than paying for them!

anok  said about 2 years ago:

there's a video shop in nth melbourne with the same retarded policy. as if you'd join that shit!

clarebear  said about 2 years ago:

It's certainly a ridiculous policy, although the range shits all over any of the other video shops around here and the vast majority are weeklys and therefore only $2.50 to hire.

adamdmills  said about 2 years ago:

is the $40 supposed to be like a security deposit? if you don't return the videos they get to keep your cash? what's wrong with charging late/replacement fees like everyone else?

clarebear  said about 2 years ago:

I suppose the $40 is for if you bugger off and never return the dvds and never show up again. I assume they still have late/replacement fees.

clarebear  said about 2 years ago:

This way I guess they don't have to track you down to get the cash.

anok  said about 2 years ago:

i can understand why the nth melbourne one does it (they're right next to some bozo backpackers joint), but why would they bother with it in well-to-do hawthorn?

kazpatafta  said about 2 years ago:

Not getting unlimited free rentals from my pal who manages the Blockbuster 5 mins walk from here anymore is pretty much the worst thing I can think of about moving interstate next week

Gorn  said about 2 years ago:

Would be difficult to find anything worth renting at a Blockbuster

hyperfuzz  said about 2 years ago:

are you for real?

juicenewton*  said about 2 years ago:

Blockbuster has fuckall.

Adam, can you help with my question in the other thread?

Gorn  said about 2 years ago:

It's the McDonalds of video stores. Fucking bland homogenous selection store to store.

kazpatafta  said about 2 years ago:

It does the job when it's free though.

hyperfuzz  said about 2 years ago:

that's freakin' ridculous. of course, if you're looking for anything rare you're probably out of luck (like with most suburban video shops), but as if there isn't a few new release movies that are worth watching. my blockbuster has at least one copy of most major arthouse release as well.

postergirl  said about 2 years ago:

It's a bit fucked, for sure, but I will nevertheless be joining as it's right near my place and it sounds amazing.
