anyone know anything about atticus or s:bahn? anyway, it's a great blog. the crow b-sides compilation is excellent etc etc. i just wish he/she would write a little about each band...

adamdmills  said about 3 years ago:

i thought about starting this thread the other day. great site.

filterfeed  said about 3 years ago:

love this site.

all i know about atticus is that they contains an atkinson (ie. brother of greg from big heavy stuff). also used to like that shovel song when i was younger. never really investigated.

SpringRain  said about 3 years ago:

cool. yeah, i just don't want to go downloading lots of stuff without knowing what they sound like at least. but i guess they have pretty good taste, so none of it could be too terrible....

Ohyeah  said about 3 years ago:

ff, greg is playing thurs night in sydders

filterfeed  said about 3 years ago:

oh good. accost him about that show they must play, ohyeah, so that i can buy me a plane ticket.

sorry about the typing errors. i suck.

Psyclops  said about 3 years ago:

Atticus featured Josh who used to man the counter at Metropolis Records when it existed. Also have a vague recollection that Matt Meyerscough who currently works at Redeye was a member as well.

adamdmills  said about 3 years ago:

a quick google search turned up this old angelfire site... it doesn't have much information, though. i'd be keen to know if scoff did indeed play in this band.

I thought this is what downloading music was for

SpringRain  said about 3 years ago:

sure. but not when you're trying to cut down and save space etc. so anyway, i checked out s:bahn (north sea clean). for anyone that is interested it's kind of like.... jangly guitars, loose/lazy drums and bass, out-of-tune male and female vocals (but sometimes in tune). quite good in places, but it hasn't grabbed me yet. they have a sense of humor too, which is nice.

FrankieTeardrop  said about 3 years ago:

S:Bahn were a pretty legendary Melbourne band. One of my favourites from the late 90s. Their first album was fairly standard math-rock, but North Sea Clean is quite amazingly jagged/tuneful in an Archers Of Loaf meets Pavement meets Shellac kinda way.

goldfoot  said about 3 years ago:

Atticus were great. My old band supported them a few times. I think a couple of them were in a band called The Templebears before they started Atticus.

Their song Lend Me An Ear got a bit of Triple J airplay back in the day and appeared on the soundtrack to an indie movie called Fresh Air that was shot around Newtown.

trafficsounds  said about 3 years ago:

what goldfoot said. in fact, i'm pretty sure the first time i saw your band play was at one of the atticus shows, probably with peabody or shnazz playing too (or maybe it was tshirt boys... my memory's failing)

also didn't s:bahn have people go onto other good bands? i don't know why but i always speak of them in the same breath as by ferry or steamer. might just be the augogo connection though. s:bahn's songs on the wonder from a quarter comp are great!

FrankieTeardrop  said about 3 years ago:

Kristian from S:Bahn moved to New York and plays in a band called Woman over there, which sounds sorta Birthday Party-ish. Not sure what the others are doing, but apart from hanging around at the same pubs at the same time, S;Bahn had very little in common with By Ferry Or Steamer.

trafficsounds  said about 3 years ago:

oh ok, thanks frankie!

SpringRain  said about 3 years ago:

speaking of by ferry or steamer, anyone know how to get their album/ep?

lafml  said about 3 years ago:

thanks for the kind words folks. to answer some questions:

  1. Atticus were Josh Morris from the Templebears on gtr/vox, Darren Atkinson from Big Heavy Stuff on drums/vx, Alex Ronayne on bass and initially also had Paul Martin on gtr/vx too. They were like a poppier Polvo in some regard (you may disagree). Well, they started out a lot more angular and ended up more poppy. They also apparently recorded (or were set to) a third album that never saw the light of day. To my recollection i don't believe that Matt Meyerscough was in the band. They are mightily missed and they were severely underrated in their day. They were at their best as a quartet, they didn't quite have that ''magic'' when they lost Paul - also his songs were killer! BTW Josh also used to work at Redeye with another ex-Templebear/Big Heavy Stuff-er Nick Kennedy.

  2. S:Bahn were a Melbourne quartet, kinda like Fugazi meets Sonic Youth or Archers of Loaf i guess. Sloppy like Tweezer could be, but a little muscular like Midget. Guitarist Kristian Brenchley also joined up with Ollie Browne (Art of Fighting) for an album under the name The Remotes, which will be uploaded on the blog maybe in the new year. vocalist/guitarist Dik (no last name!) also sang on Paul Dempsey's Scared Of Horses album (also to be uploaded soon).

  3. I was gonna write a little blurb for each band but decided against it. I like the ''lucky dip'' aspect of downloading - if you don't like it, delete it! you're not paying for it (except in bandwidth i guess). also what MY description of a band is may differ to YOUR description. So, dive in and experiment!

  4. Like Frankie said - no one in S:Bahn was in By Ferry Or Steamer. BFOS consisted of Milo (ex-Tweezer), Brendan Webb (ex-Sandpit), Matt Dufty (ex-soundguy for Something For Kate) and another soundguy Marcus Barczak. Ollie from AOF also guested. They only released 2 tracks on the ''Musical Identikit'' comp from AuGoGo & a super limited tour 7'' (like 10 copies made or something ridiculous). They had also recorded a track for an unreleased Quietly Suburban comp. I'd LOVE to upload some BFOS but only have the AuGoGo Comp. if anyone can help please contact me at lafml@yahoo.com.au

whatwhat  said about 3 years ago:

you should upload sandpit. such a great band.

Ohyeah  said about 3 years ago:

i apologise, greg is playing next thurs night, at the excelsior in slurry.

slothman  said about 3 years ago:

s:bahn fucking ruled! one of the guys in that band worked as a cameraman for GMA so i once saw Bert Newton plug an S:Bahn gig on ch10 before midday. it was a bit wierd.

loved sandpit too, i still give on second thought a regular drubbing. is there any BL Stryker recordings?

slant6  said about 3 years ago:

Atticus was/is a great outfit, really lovely bunch of blokes. I played pedal steel on one song on their Looks, Money, Talent album - Chalk Dust, which - if I'm not mistaken - was recorded at the old Charing Cross studios. I played on the first El Mopa album around the same time I think (Get Behind). This would be going back around 1998/1999? They're well worth hearing, y'all.

Brilliant work on the ASG stuff lamfl.

Trapped Water is one of my all-time favourite songs - great to see it part of the live set.

A life highlight of mine is seeing ASG, Big Heavy Stuff and SFK play together back in my uni days. Still one of the best gigs I've seen when all three bands were at the height of their powers.

letterbox  said about 1 year ago:

the au-go-go and mans ruin versions of i was cruel feature the same recordings of that song. the b-sides are different though. the american one has an out of tune demo of she-riff with dave thomas playing on it, i believe. they re-recorded it for the album version, but the single version remains my favourite. it is incredible.

the dirt haven't been payed any royalties for the au-go-go stuff for 10+ years so i wouldn't guilt out about sharing it. young and full of the devil is really hard to get and is my favourite album of theirs, such a shame.

if anyone has a spare sparrow 7'' they want to get rid of i'm quite happy to take it... it is the last piece of commercially released dirt vinyl i don't own.

mrs watson  said about 1 year ago:

I'll have to double-check, but I think I've got it. I'll check after work.

brosie  said about 1 year ago:

Great new post! Shame ASG aren't playing much anymore, some of the newer stuff is incredible & definetely my fave live band in perth.

Theres definetely two unreleased braving the seabed albums, the first one was recorded before the s/t came out with 7 tracks which has different versions of a few of the songs on the s/t.

The second one was recorded after the s/t, the only song which was released of that was mapped out in our thoughts on a split 7'' with deloris. Some of the tracks on this one are fabulously warm & slow, some of their best stuff. Also have a live disk kicking around somewhere with a few unreleased tracks on it, brendan from sandpit plays some gtr and bass.

How do you do that internet archive thing?

outofphase  said about 1 year ago:

I think you mean the waybackmachine

whatwhat  said about 1 year ago:

nope, still alive on google cache.

steveholt  said about 1 year ago:

What happened to this? Did it get shut down my the man?

lafml  said about 1 year ago:

sorry - should've given a warning.

no, it didn't get shut down by anyone. i killed it myself - been ignoring it too long because as of late there just hasn't been enough spare time to add updates, etc. didn't want to just ''leave it there'' if i wasn't going to be able to monitor it, so, yeah, its gone.

if anyone wants to start up a NEW library, of course they have my blessing.

and for all those amazing people who contributed stuff, a massive THANKS is due. also, apologies to those who sent stuff that never made it up to the blog. due to certain things that happen in life, i just can't maintain it any longer.

so long and thanks for all the phish.
