Erm, has anyone tried to make their own and is able to recommend a kit I could buy for making english type beer? It's for my husband so if you are talking to him, please don't tell him, its a christmas thing

thanks

ps-I don't know anything about beer, I don't drink it.

that said, I had a ex many years ago that used to make homemade vodka. it was so strong is would cure you of anything!

How serious do you want to get (or do you want him to get?)

I bought a bog-standard brigalow kit (fermenter, lock, hydrometer, etc) and it works fine for a simple brew.

But devo has the goods on the full home brewery set-up

get him the cooper's brew kit.

or, there is a brew shop on Sydney Rd, on the left just after Morelend Rd. Go and talk to them.

bamesjaker  said about 1 month ago:

That brew shop is good value. Good range, good advice. You can get some recipes involving kits and hops etc to make a 'real' English type beer.

Manhattan  said about 1 month ago:

Yeah, u-brew-it or something. In Keilor.

Block  said about 1 month ago:

Does he have the gear already, freaks?
Starter kits are about $80-$90.00

Then you just need a beer in the appropriate style.
That place on Sydney Rd is good, also a place near Vic Market.

cool, thanks everyone :)

Buy the herald sun today there is some big feature on Beer in it, best place to buy homebrew kits, drink it, bathe in it etc.

SheikYerbouti  said about 1 month ago:

Don't use a kit! Go to a homebrew shop, but all your grain, malt, etc, and do it for real. Adding sugar is cheating :)

Block  said about 1 month ago:

Sheik, are you really suggesting an all grain/full mash for a first timer?

electrichips  said about 1 month ago:

Yeah Sheik, that's like starting a kid out flying a 747 rather than sticking together a model plane.

electrichips  said about 1 month ago:

I reckon the Coopers kit is a good start for absolute beginners. You don't need to use the kit brew if you're not into lager or pale ale or whatever they've included - bigger general stores like Big W often stock various parts of the premium ranges and they don't require any more skill than using a basic brew.

Ha Ha Ha!

elaine  said about 1 month ago:

freaks is closer to the brew shop I mentioned than to a Big W/Kmart/target. But yes, I recommend the kit to start...the one they put in that is pretty foolproff if you follow the instructions and this encourages brewing fever.

Spidey  said about 1 month ago:

I love brewing fever, Lainey!!! its sooo addictive too.

Alas, ive not brewed now fer about 5 yrs.

elaine  said about 1 month ago:

I might start again once i get a place of my own. Block is brewing cider for me at the moment. he is a champion.

Spidey  said about 1 month ago:

I brewed near every weekend fer years and i just sort of got over it hehe.

Oooh, Cider from Block, lucky you. Can you savez me bottlez fer December trip? :]

Rove  said about 1 month ago:

If you want to get all grain quality but with the ease of kit I would suggest getting a fresh wort kit from grain and grape.

as per spidies suggestion.

btw devo say's hello.

I have just done my brew at ubrewit in Keilor....

http://www.ubrewit.com.au/

We went for the beer that is like Little Creatures. It's a fun process in which you gather the ingredients and they make it up for you, store it on site and you go back and can/bottle it after 2 weeks. It costs about $200 for 100 500ml cans.......good idea for Meredith. They have about 100 beers available.....

Spidey  said about 1 month ago:

Hey Rove. Say hellossss to Devo. Tell him his beers havent arrived here yet??? EEK!

Rove  said about 1 month ago:

jebus! will do.

Tango Whiskeyman  said about 1 month ago:

Go down to the brew shop on church street richmond. Think it's $99 for a nice little set up. They will point you in the right direction there.

Rove  said about 1 month ago:

stay away from brew craft.

anonymous  said about 1 month ago:

why?

they were ok when i went there, though it was a while ago now.

Tango Whiskeyman  said about 1 month ago:

I think they're good

Block  said about 1 month ago:

Stay away from those UBrewit types places, too.
That ain't brewing, that's renting a bit of factory space.

Rove  said about 1 month ago:

From experience generally over priced, very limited in brewing knowledge or what they are willing to impart and there a other superior homebrew outlets to go to before resorting to brew craft.
