is it illegal to post money?

fulton girls club  said about 3 years ago  or at  8:02PM on Tuesday, November 18 2008 in chat

is it illegal to post money in australia? if so does anyone know why? i tried looking for it on the internet, but the connection i am using is slow and the australia post website is DENSE.

tinyman  said about 3 years ago:

can't you fax it to them?

poprocks96  said about 3 years ago:

Why would it be illegal? As long as you are not laundering it!

A lot of grandparents would be in trouble if it was. That sneaky $10 in your birthday card!

Lilo  said about 3 years ago:

It's not illegal, but it's inadvisable.

I've had birthday mail stolen before. Thieves look out for birthday cards and take them in the hopes that there's money in them.

ha ha, awesome, well i am selling handmade t-shirts online and i am trying to work out how to get the money and all that, how can we be sure sneaky postmen won't steal the cash?

Block  said about 3 years ago:

What tiny said.

andyr  said about 3 years ago:

in the past when i have sent cash i have used express post so it doesn't get stolen.

andyr  said about 3 years ago:

registered post would work too -- but i don't know which is cheaper.

fulton girls club  said about 3 years ago:

do you recon i'd be right if i recomended that when they mailed me the shirts they want me to draw on, they should wrap the money in the shirt? do they open and search packages like that? i mean packages that are bulky with shirts in them.

poprocks96  said about 3 years ago:

Why can't people who buy off you eft the money to you?

tinyman  said about 3 years ago:

i sold stuff thru ebay and sorting out a paypal account was dead easy.

Modi  said about 3 years ago:

Just write ''contains money, do not lose'' on the outside.

Money orders, which are available at any post office, are exchangeable for cash. Or you could have them deposit directly into your bank, or you could set up a paypal account.

Block  said about 3 years ago:

YES FULTON TSHIRTS ARE CONSIDERED CONTRABAND GOODS THESE DAYS.

fulton girls club  said about 3 years ago:

i don't have a bank account and alot of my ''fans'' don't trust the internet with their money, i trust postmen less than the internet.

fulton girls club  said about 3 years ago:

i think i might do the paypal thing, it sounds rock solid, maybe the money orders, thanks for all the ideas and stuff dudes.

Modi  said about 3 years ago:

Find a nice credit union and set up an account.

But seriously, postal money orders are your best bet.

No bank account means it's actually your only option, cos you can't clear cheques

fulton girls club  said about 3 years ago:

thanks alot modi.

FUCK! what the fuck is with that slurpee add? so much has changed on this website since i signed up here.

poprocks96  said about 3 years ago:

Why don't you have a bank account?

fulton girls club  said about 3 years ago:

i only ever had a job once, so never had much need for one. but that is changing so i better get one.

How can you not have a bank account? And you won't be able to use paypal without one anyway.

So you don't work, but you don't have a uni loan or get the dole either?

I don't think that Pops and I were trying to defend or support the banks. We were just wondering how someone gets by without a bank account in this day and age when so much of our day to day functioning requires one. Without a bank account it's very hard/almost impossible to obtain an income.

__v  said about 3 years ago:

Fair enough.

Modi  said about 3 years ago:

Yay! Shops within walking distance for all!

Mate, the government could afford to give you more than $2000 a month. No government I have ever heard of went broke because of welfare payments.

Wars? Yeah sure. Bailing out multinational companies? Obviously.

Looking after their own population? Never sends you broke.

The government could double their welfare spending and it would hardly make a ripple in the economy.

poprocks96  said about 3 years ago:

Precisely, clarebear.

It had nothing to do with corporate profit or bank fees. Just curiousity how someone gets by on a day to day basis. If you try to deny that you are not dependent on your bank account and eftpos card then I probably won't believe you.

money taped to a piece of cardboard in an envelope>postal orders.

postal orders just cost too much to make it worthwhile unless you're sending hundreds

Modi  said about 3 years ago:

You can only get a postal order for up to $1000

email  said about 3 years ago:

lucky they aren't sending 10's of hundreds then 'eh?

oort  said about 3 years ago:

You can only get a postal order for up to $1000

or an express postal money order which can be upto $10,000 and costs $20

Block  said about 3 years ago:

Are these tshirts fulton is making $2000 each, or something?

poprocks96  said about 3 years ago:

Does a money order of $10K have to go through Austrac?

kuroneko  said about 3 years ago:

I've had money sent to me and by me in the post before (small amounts for records etc) and it's been totally fine but if the mail doesn't arrive, who's at fault? Either slap a $5 registered post option on sales or tell your buyers they send cash through the post at their own risk.

elaine  said about 3 years ago:

also: if people put coins (or keys!) in there, it breaks the mail sorting machines.

and rips up about 50 letters either side of yours.

it's one of the biggest causes of 'lost' mail.

yes, this is a fact.

theblacklodge  said about 3 years ago:

as an ex-Aust Post employee ...
NEVER send coins or keys ... or ANYTHING of value through the post (registered or express or anything). If you saw how your mail is actually treated you'd be ill. I don't think theft is the actual problem but folks there couldn't give two craps about your mail, it's just get the job done and go home after your shift, then repeat.

gabbo  said about 3 years ago:

maybe, FGC, you could barter with people, and they could also send a watch, or telephone, or some barley, or linen, or somesuch.

elaine  said about 3 years ago:

or he could just open a bank account?

in turn nobody will shop there and we'll all go back to the local fruit and veg shops.

i like the sentiment, but yuck: who here buys fruit and veg from safeway anyway?

de.foxus  said about 3 years ago:

when you work 9-5 and spend your weekends drunk and/or hungover, there's very little chance to shop elsewhere.

''Are you the annoying person that has to get a friend with a credit card to book your flights?''

haha - this made me laugh! that friend has been me on occasion!

questionmark  said about 3 years ago:

as a user of the mails for hundreds of packages (including sending cash in the pre-internet days where an international money order was the only other option) I have no complaints, I have had only three things not arrive, one was to an address in italy and two from the us, all unregistered but of no real value.

selected works  said about 3 years ago:

feh, i don't buy that argument de.foxus.
