Where's a good place to take a turntable for repair?

tawedog said about 2 months ago:
Thornbury Records have a turntable repair service, I hear.

Although I don't know if they're good. But if I remember correctly, he's quite a nice chap.

Hellzapoppin  said about 9 months ago:

I'm eyeing off a Pro-ject turntable at the moment.. did you go the ebay method shiroineko?

There appears to be some of the cheapest in the UK. I gather due to them being 230V 50hz as well, that all I'd need would be a plug adaptor?

monoceros  said about 9 months ago:

Carlton Audio Visual do repairs. Not used 'em myself but might be worth looking at.

Thats why I did

But you could try to pick up a pro-ject speed box since most pro-ject tt are manual
these make life a lot more easier and If you can get one in Aus they will have the Aus plug on them

Hi-Fi Trader on King St (Sydney) has 15% off all turntables. Finally upgraded from my shitty, 30 year old standalone unit to one that I can whack into my mini hi-fi for $250. Get on it.

Where's a good place to get a new turntable belt? I'm pretty sure I need a new one.

flukazoid  said 8 days ago:

Help!

So, I have a Pioneer PL-6 turntable. It's been in the family for a while.

I have an issue with a fair amount of distortion on the top-end, especially on sibilance in vocals (''S'' and ''T''). I changed cartridge and stylus over the weekend (just a $45 unit), same problem - probably worse.

So I took it in to Len Wallis in Lane Cove and they had a listen and said ''well, it doesn't seem that bad'' (it is, IMHO) ''... but if you want to get rid of it you'll need to buy a $200 cartridge/stylus'' - a Garrott K1.

I'm up for doing it if that's what it takes - but is there anything else I should be diagnosing before I take this step? I don't want to spend $200 and then discover I haven't fixed the actual problem.

What do you guys reckon? Got solutions for these kinds of issues?

flukazoid  said 8 days ago:

My reason for uncertainty is that I looked into cartridge alignment protractors, which has been recommended to fix this on some message boards - but it seems like a pretty intense process (hence me going into a store to ask about it). The guys there laughed it off and said it was largely baseless. So I'm stumped.

steveholt  said 8 days ago:

I'd play around with the anti-skate and tracking force.

Does it do it with all records?

flukazoid  said 8 days ago:

Yeah it does it with all records, new or old.

I've played with the tracking force and antiskate a fair bit. Not getting heaps of improvement, subtle if at all. Frustrating...

Shortpants Romance  said 8 days ago:

Have you tried using a different amp? If so, it may be worth forking out the 200 dollars.

steveholt  said 8 days ago:

Seems odd that nothing changed even though you bought a new cartridge.

flukazoid  said 8 days ago:

I suspect the new cartridge I got was slightly cheaper than the old one. Not by a lot, but I just wanted to see if the old one was faulty.

Have you tried using a different amp?

Yeah, took it into the store and tried winding it up through one of their systems. So yeah, definitely on the source end...

Tempted to bite the bullet...

steveholt  said 8 days ago:

I just picked up a Rega P1 off eBay for $200. Sounds beautiful. Might be worth chancing your arm on a new one.

clinton  said 3 days ago:

Has anyone seen a portable, battery-operated turntable? Any info would be appreciated.

Finished yesterday, but they'll probably have them again...

VelvetDogge  said 2 days ago:

Rega P1 or Technics 1200. which to go for?

both about the same price. it's not like i'm planning to dj or anything but i'm thinking the technics is just a bit more hardy and i don't know that i really have the hi-fi gear to justify the rega.
