I know there's a Christmas Album thread, okay?!!
Anyways, when I catch myself listening lots to Aimee Mann it's like an early warning system - those soothing adult-oriented tales of urban alienation tell me that I must have the blues of some sort, I just haven't realised it.

I'm With Stupid is by far her best.
Love love love. Anyone got the newie?
yep - i lost everything else so it's all i got. Grew from meh to indispensable.
I'm With Stupid, really? It's all about Bachelor #2 for me. Maybe it's the first you discover that becomes your favourite, or something.
And yeah, she gets under your skin, something about her melodies seems a bit bland at first, but then they suddenly come into focus.
i agree HSH...I'm With Stupid Was the first i heard and yes, it got under my skin bigtime. last couple have been a bit bland for me.
I like a couple of songs off the last two but yeah, it seems bland. Maybe I need to give them more of a chance.
I haven't bothered with anything since The Forgotten Arm. Not interested so much.
Any Michael Penn fans too?
draw the line at Penn, sorry.Don't get me started on that dude who's Madonna's brother either.
never heard of him, having a listen now.
Yeah, Michael Penn's great - ''Try''. Such a very similar songwriter to Aimee. I downloaded a bootleg of the two of them doing a show together circa 2000, with a comedian doing the banter. Great show.
joe henry? he was ok.
penn's into the mellotron/chamberlain, eh.
aimee mann is fucking great. such simple, direct songwriting, especially lyrically.
''please save me/from the ranks of the freaks/who suspect/they could never love anyone.''
just bought Whatever @ an opshop. LOVING IT. Instant winner
penn's into the mellotron/chamberlain, eh.
Yeah, theres an awesome version of Long Way Down from letterman in 91 with a chamberlin on the stage. Its on Youtube.
Im a big fan of both. Although Aimee Mann Live is fucking boring. Like really boring. Avoid at all costs!
just the ticket for tonight.
feels sadness
for some reason i can't stop listening to bachelor no 2
it's annually making its way into fave albums of all time
I love Bachelor #2. But I think I like Lost in Space and Im with stupid even more.
I have just discovered that Aimee Mann is touring!
WITH BEN LEE
FFS
Aside from FeildingMellish who esle has seen her live? I reckon it might be boring.
i hope she does her own show then -maybe somewhere like bennetts lane- i'd go
I saw her play in London a few years ago - wasn't quite sure who she was (was at a festival killing time before Neil Young & Crazy Horse) and was vaguely expecting the ''I kissed a girl'' person for some reason - what was her name? Ani DiFranco.
Anyway, from this unpromising position I was quite won over. Terrific band, excellent songs. Probably a bit on the classically tasteful side for some tastes but never lazily so.
But I am not going into a room where Ben Lee is, so it is a bit academic.
Jill Sobule man!
i kissed a girl was jill sobule
ani di franco was fuck you
Is she supporting said precocious cunt or vice versa? But yes, with Ben Lee equals not a good sign. I got her live DVD. It's a bit too pristine. The bootlegs of her shows with her husband are grt though.
How come you wrote that sentence perfectly and then got to the word great and decided not to use vowels? Just wondering.
oops.
for a second i thought you were an enraged ani di franco fan or something there, danna.
hahaha. nah man. the ole press enter and it doesn't put the line break in trick. ani di franco? shudders
I was watching a dvd with my toddler called ''Arctic Adventure'', it's basically a doco looking at nature, and Aimee is all over the soundtrack! was a nice surprise. Queen Latifah narrating as well - Yo!
Although the concerts I saw were boring, I'll still go to this. She's a rad songwriter and maybe she won't be so boring. When I saw her, it was with a bass player and keyboardist. I think totally solo or with a full band would be great. Plus, she has about 30 really brilliant songs.
I really should attend her gig, even though it will be somehwere like Hamer Hall in melbourne. Ben Lee? Christ. Even Josh Pyke would be a more suitable support. Still, if I get a good enough seat i can piff shit at him during ''I love Pop Music''
I also saw her before Neil Young in London. She was ace. Played mainly stuff from Batchelor. And that song ''You Fucked It Up''.
Sadly any association with Ben Lee is unforgivable!
It's at the Palais, Goalie.
thanks Pops. Can I still piff shit at Ben Lee?
i almost don't want to know the answer to this question... but is she supporting ben lee or is he supporting her?
Inpress writes it as Ben Lee supporting her, I hope this is correct. Also says tickets via Ticketmaster, but I can't find any on there yet
heard about this today
gotta say, aimee looks damn good for her age, in fact she seems not to age
i want to know about this, too.
Dunno. Maybe I need more batteries in my keyboard, which is USB/wireless.
Is she supporting ben or is he supporting her?
I wanna see this, i love Aimee Mann. is that only 2 gigs?
It says up there that Ben lee is supporting her.
I didn't think she was Palais big. Guess I was wrong.
Ben Lee's only supporting in Melbs and Syd, and I have tickets for Brisbane. Win!
I gots my ticket for next Sat.
I don't reckon she is. I'm going though and actually really looking forward to it!
2nd row! Can't wait.
tonight
was great on thursday - just her and two dudes who mostly played keyboards. about halfway through i was a little worried that it was going to get really samey but it picked up after that. she responds to requests too, to the point of having a ringbinder with chords for all her songs on stage.
i'm expecting one or two reaaaaly big fans yelling out requests, saying ''I LOVE YOU AIMEEEE'' and laughing way too loudly at banter.
Saw Aimee last night at Enmore in Sydney - really good. After an average couple of songs on the bland side to begin, it picked up a lot. There were some nice variations and the small band (2 keyboard players/multi-instrumentalists worked well).
We actually had to split after an hour of her set, which was awesome because we walked out after Save Me, and just before Ben Lee joined her onstage for a duet. Didn't even see him! Just heard his voice trailing off behind me for 3 seconds. Mann unspoiled!
Good gig, started a bit ''samey Mann'' but four songs in I got used to the instrument setup and she seemed to loosen up. Crappy fan shout outs? Check. Unwanted singalongs? Check. Obsessive fan storming the stage at the end, only to be stopped by security? Bingo!
The two other dudes were great, and their various tones were remarkably close to the albums at times. Aimee is a dab hand at bass too. She was goofy and likeable, and played for aaaaages, top value.
Except the empire of the sun duet with ben lee, that was total flotsam.
I saw her in London a couple of years ago, and thought it was a great gig.
+1 Goalie. Amazing gig I thought - better than I expected her capable of - great performer, instrumentation setup worked really well I thought.
Bit surprised by the size of the crowd. Despite earlier statement I thought it would be at least half full, but was closer to 1/4.
Was surprised how much love in the room.
The official word (from management, while I waiting to photograph her) was only 1000 tickets sold and I think the capacity of The Palais is 3000. I was also EXTREMELY surprised only a 1/3 was sold, especially considering she has never toured Melbourne or Australia before.
Hard to explain why? Ben Folds sold out the same venue quickly after the tickets were available and maybe the punters ticket's money didn't stretch to cover both gigs? Maybe they were at Flip Out! :)
Even that or it was the other Ben factor (i.e. the support act, Ben Lee), which tends to polarise people. You ever love him or hate him. Hard to explain that also. I still think most people dislike Ben Lee because he got to go out with Claire Danes.
ATTENTION M+N READERS....START ANTI-BEE LEE RANT NOW! :P
Awesome gig. Great choice of material. I dont think she played anything off the first solo record though. ''Voices Carry'' was a nice suprise too.
The two guys were great. They did completely different arrangements, but still kept the classic parts in there. She played about a dozen of my favourites too.
Highlights were ''I Dont Even Know You anymore'' , ''Amateur'', ''Save Me'', ''Wise Up'', ''Freeway'', ''Video''. Actually, it was all really excellent. There was a lot of dicks in the audience though. There was some American woman infront of me acting all rad. (Not Aimee Mann, a different one).
Want to buy Whatever and I'm with Stupid on iTunes but no go, anyone able to gmail em?
Ah aimee.
you know it's a late night in the office when i'm harmonising nice n loud to aimee mann youtube videos
Aimee Mann!
She was in an episode of Portlandia as herself, working as a housekeeper.
