Coconot

Coconot need their own thread. No more in El Guincho's shadow! I have translated their bio from the Spanglish.

Long before his solo project El Guincho took flight, Pablo Díaz-Reixa’s psych-tropicalia-rock band, Coconot (with Cristian Subirà and Jens Neumaier) had established themselves as leaders of Barcelona’s thriving underground music scene.

Coconot’s debut album Novo Tropicalismo Errado (2005) featured krautrock-influenced sounds with lo-fi punk sensibilites, cloaked in the rhythms and melodies of Latin America, the Caribbean and Spain. That album was recorded in three days and reflected the band’s artistic restlessness and urgency to realise a vision that had been in their minds for years.

Taking these urges to new heights, Coconot’s second album Cosa Astral (release date: November 15) is a stunning leap forwards which twists the limits of pop music into a new sphere beyond the confines of “tropicalism”, “psychedelia” and “space”.

On Cosa Astral, the band approached the songs as if they were constellations, reefs or cliffs. Their dream was to write pop songs in Spanish, applying their imagination and experimental ideas to make a new kind of pop music. Samples were eschewed for real instruments; bizarre beats were dreamed up; guitars sound like keyboards, keyboards sound like horns or woodwinds. The explosion of tastes, shapes, landscapes and natural exuberance reflect Coconot’s collective joy and faith in all the good things of this world.

Illuminated with light, like the lightning which appears in many of Pablo’s lyrics, Cosa Astral is the soundtrack to a heady, sunshiney summer.
