oops done taa.
I'm in the market for a smallish bass combo amp (preferably solid state) that also sounds great for guitar. It's gotta pack a bit of punch for noise shows, as well as giving a great clear sound for my more poppy band. Single 12'' or 15'' speaker would be good, or maybe 2x10''.
Any suggestions, or am I asking for too much?
Keep in mind that I'm not rich!
play bass through a guitar amp!
I used to use an Abbey Sound amp, Project X model. Single 10'' speaker, 20 or 30 watts it was robust as all hell and sounded fantastic. They're down in Seaford.
20 or 30 watts, eh? Could you get a decent volume and bottom end out of that? I know you like a farty bass sound, rigid.
You could. It had a distortion switch which I had on. It's the bass on the Boogas' ''Octopus'' single, if you've heard that. Clean though, it was full and meaty.
Cool. I shall investigate.
On the cheap keep an eye out for a 1x15 100watt fender bassman combo. If you can afford a fair bit more check out Mark Bass gear for portable power.
i just bought my wife one of these:

My bass amp weighs about 2kg, almost fits in a kids lunchbox and puts out 550 watts. Don't have a lightweight cab yet though. It's an Ea Micro iAMP Sounds ultra clean (way too clean actually) so you could run a guitar through it with just a tweak of the eq knobs.
Bassman Rumble 100
Oh, and the more watts the better for bass.
I quite like the Fender Bassmans mentioned. Or maybe a Peavey TKO 75 watt
I need something robust like that.
Thanks for the link MattuS!
The Ea Micro iAMP sounds great godzilla! If you look at the gear thread i need something like that.
A quick search puts 'em around $1600, is that right?
get an 8x10'' fridge frankie!!! stop wasting your time with lill amps. MORE POWER!!!
see above
Ampeg should make a mini fridge. A bar fridge, even.
I might check out the Peavey TKO 75 that's in the swoppy next week.
Is that you in the photo, dudewolf?
frankie i would LOVE to rock a rig like that
Mine was about $600 second hand. They are currently $850 new from bassgeardirect
frankie, You should see it from the back though
Hmm, still a bit pricey. But seeing's as how my bass rig is heavy as lead, and my guitar rig is a piece of crap and this could do both...
I will have to investigate. Cheers 'zilla!
rad! who is that???
Don't know what happened to my pic, it flashes then disappears. Here it is a gain from a different link
From the pic name, I'd guess the band is names immortal.
Simon, I was running an ampeg tube preamp and a big heavy pa power amp in a rack bag. I stuffed my elbow and shoulder trying to carry it with one hand. Now I have the tiny amp and a tech 21 vt bass pedal to restore that ampeg sound. Weighs next to nothing
Still need a speaker though (wouldnt I?), and I'm looking for something I can carry.
posted this in the other thread, not a bass amp but it's what Ive found so far:
http://www.555music.com.au/brands/zt-lunchbox-amps.html
a bit expensive imo but this does have appeal
A backpack with the amp in one pocket, a 7kg 1x10'' speaker in the main part of the backpack and room for leads etc in the remaining pocket.
Yeah, that kinda thing looks very cool.
''Price $T.B.A'' Ha! Although I think $1200 is the going rate? Pricey.
They do sound ace though. I tried one at Bass Centre, couldn't believe the volume it packed.
Hm, more investigation into that ZT thing says it's more like a 15 watt amp. Not loud enough!
Im leaning more towards the EA now. Just gotta find one in Melbourne.
Shit, if I'd had that 6 years ago I'dve saved 6 years of the band moaning about dragging my rig everywhere!
man.. if I had too much money how I'd love to run an Eden Traveller or similar into the sweetest pair of 2x10 I could afford.
I think 2 x 10 is my favourite spread aside from the standard quad. 1 x 15.. just never really did it for me. I love the deep but miss the cut-through.
hahaha that pic of immortal is priceless
love em
2x10's rule, i have a sweet eden one, still weighs a bit.
i've got a 1 x 15, it will be nice when it gets out of storage.
I had a Fender Rumble 100 (1x15) when I first started playing bass. I tolerated it for the first year, but it really didn't have the bottom end I wanted. But it wasn't very heavy and was on 4 wheels, which was good. I ended up getting an Ampeg 4x10, which I love for the sound, but cost heaps more and is a total bitch to move.
Like lots of people, I assumed that a 1x15 would have more bottom than a 4x10. I was wrong
After some research I'm leaning towards buying towards buying a seperate head and cab. So, what's the deal, comparatively, with 1x15, 1x12 and 2x10 cabs. I've only ever used a 2x10 before, for both bass and guitar. Will a 1x12 give me a comparable sound?
We used a Gallien Krueger mb150e for our recording and it was the tits. Small, powerful and great sound. Check it our here
It doesnt have that bowel rumbling that a fridge will give you, but its got that sweet warm responsive tone.
I've been contemplating the Ampeg BA115 (100watt). Bloody nice amp, and not too cumbersome at 31kg. 900 bucks though :(
I've been eying of the rechargeable 30w pignose bass machines:
Downsizing could be a whole new vibe for Galactagogue.

Sweet! I could agree to that stupidity to save my shoulder.
LOL-fail. I had to re-post :(
Thankfully my url cut and paste abilities were in full swing :]
I'd you're in Melb, HellZ you should hop over to the ozbass forum. I think they have a get together coming up where everyone brings there basses and rigs for each other to try out.
I went to the Sydney one and it was very helpful
They had one of those ampeg combos at my old Uni and it sound like complete toss.
Totally go head and cab. That's my two cents.
Care to elaborate, aircrash? I need some pointers.
I want to use this amp for loud, distorted noise shit and straightforward pop sounds.
I just thought it was really floppy with no real definition.. Kinda sounded choked as well. I that makes sense.
