i'm having a discussion with esquared about syd bands right now and we pretty much concluded there are too many shitty 'post-punk' bands (think joy division apes/lifeless 'antagonistic' shit) and not enough creative bands.
i think there are a bunch of great bands around right now doing really good shit, some of them being Songs, Circle Pit, Rand & Holland, Straight Arrows etc but really not enough of these. also i feel like some of these bands could be really big in the sense that they could draw the kind of crowd My Disco or Fabulous Diamonds could.
i feel like some of the problem is that people here want to make a career out of their music instead of just having their art be free or something, and lots of people are really industry type assholes, but there's gotta be people who aren't into that right? maybe not, maybe sydney really is dead? i don't think so though.
what do y'all think
oh and feel free to turn this into melbourne vs. sydney fist fight

you forgot dead farmers
heh shut yer face
as opposed to shitty post punk bands do you think bands like 'rand and holland' are 'creative'?
i said it didn't i?
tell me what you think man, i want to hear peoples' opinions, i'm actually hoping to discover more local bands from this, rather than just bitch
I don't really care. I usually go to gigs to socialise. The last 'new' sydney bands I saw and considered to be really good were golden mean and the thaw.
Your post reads like you don't like post-punk but like artsy fartsy indie shit. I am sure there ney creative, orignal , derivative (but not necessarily bad) and plan shit sydney bands who play either artsy farsty indie shit or post-punk.
dear oh dear. too many spelling errors. time for bed.
I think most bands play it too safe. wank.
sorry, i didn't really explain it properly. i like anything/any genre, i just feel like lately there's an abundance of this particular sound and it comes with a certain lifelessness...i don't know if post-punk is the right descriptor, maybe indie or dance-punk or something. i like a lot of post-punk but not the kind that tonnes of bands in sydney are playing right now.
it's just an observation. i have more of an issue with there not feeling like there's much creativity going on, too much careerism. maybe it's always been that way here. i guess this is predictably going to turn into a sydney vs. melbourne fight.
the crabs never played it safe. but the crabs always played at sheltered workshops.
i think its more that there are so many shitty bands that follow the similar post-punk ish sound. It's an overburdened style and there's hardly any good ones.
A point i made to celluloid though is that there's also been similar at the other ends of the spectrum - not sure about now, but i remember a while ago feeling like there was a particular amount of orchid-worshipping DIY bands about, a lot of which weren't great either.
I think the current trend of sydney bands is on its way out anyway. Mercy Arms and Valentinos never really seemed to capitalize on their hype, and the new bands with that kind of hype seem a bit more of the grand, indie type (ie. seabellies, sparkadia, and to an extent recent dappled stuff). There seem to be a lot more bands like that popping up too, some good, some bad.
haha
see thats the point. cool bands..wild ones never even play gigs.
I had a band called ebb in 97'. we were so insane we wouldn't leave my house. Mick the bass player said I don't want to play gigs. it's wank. I said yeah ya right. so we didn't.
Look up wifey. We just won the usyd band comp. But then again maybe don't. The less attention we get here the better attended our gigs seem to be.
we played war music. like punk rock charges and shit. mad shit. unfit for human consumption..battlefield music.

oh, I see. A bit like the post rock epidemic that happened a few years ago.
At least greenland pushed the envelope by introducing the bass wah to post rock.
I had a shinei psychadelic fuzz machine. If I took that out now with a 60 watt golden tone and 4 x 12 I'd seriously get locked up. not booted..locked up..in jail. why? for inciting ..

you find shit music cuz you are listening in the wrong spot. REALLY!
we're all gonna hang-out in the heroin thread now?
haha. i consider the laurels one of the creative ones by the way

this is a bit of an old quote but...

how many venues give ANY band a go? ie band rocks up and says we wanna play, give us a date. and the venue says cool - how about this date?
a few M&N people have been to YourSpace, a couple have even had their bands play but perhaps the rest of you dont know about it.
I run a night at the Sly Fox Hotel (Enmore) called 'YourSpace Muso Showcase'
our policy is exactly the above, ANYONE can book in to play, the ONLY rule is you must be over 18. to book all you need to do is check the availabilities online & then email/msg to book in.
YS is on every Thursday night from 7pm with 10+ bands, solos, duos etc - of all different genres and often different levels of ability. plus at the end of the night around midnight we have an open stage jam session.
we have many, many acts that return to play regularly as (according to HEAPS of the act i deal with) its pretty much the only gig you can play in Sydney where you are almost guarunteed to have a crowd of people there to watch.
sydney people need to be given more credit.
although i believe there is far too much apathy and discontent (ESPECIALLY amongst musos, which just feeds back into the scene and doesnt help)
i have seen, and do see EVERY week - numerous people that make the effort to go out and see bands that they've never seen, even though they are likely to not like every single act as they range from solo chicks whinging about their boyfriends to hip-hop duos, to spoonplayers, to country folk acts to wanna be metal band to wanky softrock to experimental noise bands
running YourSpace and seeing how many people out there wanna play gigs but cant or dont know how to get them, or have the standard 'venues dont respond to their requests to play'
led to me quitting my telco job and starting my own live music booking business. i now hold regular gigs around Sydney, a lot of which featuring bands that have played YS
ironically enough most of these other gigs I hold at 'proper' venues rarely get the numbers we get at YS.
there are a bunch of people out there besides those running warehouse venues that are trying to bring the ethos of those kinds of shows (shows booked by musos themselves, shows FOR musos not for the venues wallet) that are putting on gigs at 'real venues' the guys from Unherd Productions (Jade & Mark from Derkajam), Doingitlive, the Fuji Collective boys, Floozy Entertainment + a bunch of other individual musicians that take the initiative to not just book their own shows but shows for others. people that realise they are part of a community, not a competition or a game
jesus that was a massive rant, sorry for babbling on but I just wanted to point out that there are people out there giving it a go and that its not a lack of music or bands or places to play, but often a lack of attendance at the 'real venues' that is often the problem.
fluk sorry for the novel
cool
LOL
The Exiles were fantastic at the Hopetoun last Thursday, as were Wifey
oh, so that's what it is! i wonder about it every time i pass the sly fox
you should come in next time whale :)
Question: who is the most ''influential'' Sydney band chat on here? I need to pm them.
pm wipey.
what a strange question.
dunno about ''influential'', but I can point you in the direction of an ''infamous'' chat...
pm scallywag.
pm anonymous
Sorry - typo. I meant ''pump'' not ''pm''
Anon check yr pms mate. Ta.
Sorry nothing sinister, just an innocent question from a young man trying to get by as best he can.
The Exiles are a grand band. I was stressing so hard about making up the numbers for that show and it all came together ok and that is without a large number of people I expected to see showing up. It really bums me out that the people who came to see Ernest Ellis only showed up ten minutes before he played and missed all the other bands; I don't understand why people have this assumption that the default is disinterest. I always presume their is some chance I will enjoy something I haven't seen before. The other band's crowds hung around and watched at least the first twenty minutes of their show. It's really weird though. I invited people from work and they only came in to see me play and sat outside smoking for the bulk of the night. I don't think people really have the discipline to watch bands anymore. That is why places like MUM do so well. The band aspect is just one option of the night. People really don't see dedicated music venues as very social and if they are out with friends they want to dedicate most of their night to that. Makes it hard to win over new crowds. Blah.
I think thats one of the big problems with smoking laws though andy. punters need their nicotine more than their music.
People say that but really smoking is just something to do with your hands when you feel awkward. Otherwise nicotine patches would have cured smoking by now. Off to the pub.
Oh, I thought it was music that was something to do with your hands when you felt awkward.
There are some creative ones out there. You just have to look harder
