Everett True disses Aus street press.

andyr  said about 10 months ago  or at  12:29PM on Tuesday, August 12 2008.

has this been posted / argued about?

from the guardian:

Rock critic Everett True has relocated to Brisbane and, in his first weekly blog, he explains why he's not happy with the local music press

Australians don't have much respect for the music press - it runs counter to their culture. Australian rock is all about ''Good on ya, mate - well done for getting up on stage and switching that amplifier on''. The idea of anyone actually daring to criticise musicians for the sound they make is almost heresy. Everyone is treated equally, which means no knocking anyone back, however great the temptation. (That'll be why Australian rock is best known to the outside world for such musical abominations as Silverchair, the Vines and Savage Garden.)

then he goes on to say how good he is for founding plan b.

The current British street press tradition is working so well at pumping out astoundingly awesome music. Ahem.

< I don't actually know what i'm saying, but it's right.

postergirl  said about 10 months ago:

Haha. Everett True. Remember him in Melody Maker? All he could talk about was how was the BFF of Kurt and Courtney.

Jerry don't know shit.

DANNA  said about 10 months ago:

I agree with the person that wrote ''what would cortney love think of this? WE DESERVE TO KNOW!''

FrankieTeardrop  said about 10 months ago:

Who gives a fuck what Everett True says? The man 'discovered' Nirvana, so he's indirectly responsible for the existence of Silverchair and The Vines after all!

adam  said about 10 months ago:

I like this story better:

Here's what Noel (gallagher) did say, when asked about the Jay-Z debacle: ''If people in the fucking Observer and the Guardian wanna get on their high horse about it, there's not a great deal I can do.''

He then realises that he's overstepped the mark and backtracks with a nervous apology. Only joking. ''It really pisses me off,'' he continues, ''all these spotty herberts whose mams and dads voted for Margaret Thatcher all those years are now sitting on some moral fucking high chair.''

Modi  said about 10 months ago:

Yeah, Aussies are not known for knocking people who do well int heir field.

It runs counter to our culture.

Ohyeah  said about 10 months ago:

who?

__v  said about 10 months ago:

I thought Everett True was rubbish back when he wrote for Melody Maker, although I do like the way he championed The Laughing Clowns / Ed Kuepper. Was always on hand with a hyperbolic review of an EK album in the 90s.

He also has a blog in the Village Voice, which I've been half-following.

Angelic  said about 10 months ago:

is he a good critic dude thingo?

adam  said about 10 months ago:

SHUT IT, YOU SPOTTY HERBERTS!

Maybe, but you can't blame Nirvana.

JonBonJovial  said about 10 months ago:

Discovered Nirvana?

True is best known by many music fans as the man who introduced Courtney Love to Kurt Cobain in 1991.

Killed Kurt Cobain morelike

__v  said about 10 months ago:

keenly anticipates Everett True logging onto M+N for a good stoush

oh for fuck's sake. i think everyone is missing the point here.

it's free! we don't pay for it! what a novel concept! that's why the uk don't get it!

it's not journalism, it's work experience.

shaun  said about 10 months ago:

there is street press in the uk

the Stool Pigeon is a London music freebie and it has pretty alright content

''You get the media you deserve sometimes - or the media that a population base or market can support.''

Melbourne and Sydney are pretty big cities, with decent cultural markets to turn up advertising. Plenty of smaller American cities turn out decent alt-weeklies.

Barman  said about 10 months ago:

True. But some steaming turds of publications come from smaller cities too.

ProDelgado  said about 10 months ago:

There's free music papers in northern england too, there's a decent one for Newcastle called Narc...

He's right. How sad.

duncbot  said about 10 months ago:

Also, do we need to be told what's good or bad? Personally my wanker-alert would be sounding at an ear-splitting level if an Australian NME popped up trying to tell me who the most 'important' bands in Australia are. Who gives a shit what the rest of the world thinks our music is about?

bebop  said about 10 months ago:

Obviously we all do. Seeing as this thread has over 400 posts and Everett's blog was front page news around the countr. Australians care. An awful lot..

questionmark  said about 10 months ago:

in other words, street press.

temporarybenbutler  said about 10 months ago:

This could shake things up:

The founder of Time Out is looking to bring in external investors and considering putting the magazine's comprehensive listings on the internet and distributing a slimmed-down free copy of the publication as part of what would be the most radical shake-up in its 40-year history.

(Well, in the UK at least.)

Block  said about 10 months ago:

Did those mooted local versions of Time Out ever eventuate?

temporarybenbutler  said about 10 months ago:

They've got one in Sydney, do they not?

anonymous  said about 10 months ago:

yup, been going a year or so?

still around, dunno how well its going from a finance perspective.

spose to spread to melb once its settled in.

anonymous  said about 10 months ago:

though i've heard its doing ok because its got a way better distro network then the trad streetpress (cafes/newsagents/more artier places) and the ads sell ok, plus the bonus of the cover price/subs for people who pay it (may be a fair few comps around, but its budgeted in)

anonymous  said about 10 months ago:

and can sell a wider range of ads, so syd opera house and the restaurant trade and 'classier' pubs and more touristy places will get ads as well.

Brian O'Dwyer  said about 10 months ago:

this bit is right;

''The idea of anyone actually daring to criticise musicians for the sound they make is almost heresy''

too many kids heard godspeed and dirty three and now wanna be cool about it. whos pushing? scenes are smashing together coz we all found noise and now everyones claiming to be from the tribe that found it, just because god exists doesn't mean you should follow him.

this bit is wrong;

''Everyone is treated equally, which means no knocking anyone back, however great the temptation.''

Ha. double ha. just look at all the 'i'm to cool for you' bullshit that we're all surrounded by, soap opera punk show. we aren't treated equally. go to any sub-genre night and see how left out you are, then go start a band. 'johnny the homicidle maniac', 'lisa freakin simpson'!

the wookie defence, seriously.
