cinema vs home

tinyman  said 37 days ago  or at  11:18AM on Tuesday, July 22 2008.

is cinema supposed to be the absolute best quality? cos lately i think i'd been noticing my local cinema's projection isn't so crash hot. like a lot of people, after watching fight club i can't help but notice those little black marks on the corners of the screen now and then. but it's not just those, there's a bit of black dust/noise to the general cinema projection. i think my mate's high def tv is actually miles ahead of the cinema in picture clairity. and pretty damn close in effective size too, in his little lounge room. if only he'd invest in a quality sound system with subwoofer, i'd never want to fork out for cinema tickets again! i haven't even seen a movie in blu-ray yet, this is just standard dvd on an expensive new screen.

tigers  said 37 days ago:

the black marks are there no matter how good quality the cinema is.
but yeah, the picture quality at some cinemas is pretty woeful...

Cinema has cinema popcorn and choc tops, fuck what the movie looks like.

Actionralf  said 37 days ago:

and giant fuck off cokes!

tigers  said 37 days ago:

every time i get choc tops now though, i get in the cinema and only then realise that i have to eat it straight away.
i like how in gold class and drive ins you can get em half way through.
it's the only way to go...

bungle  said 37 days ago:

a good home projector can give you a 'better' quality picture than the cinema on standard dvd, but where's the popcorn? bucket seats? watered down coke in 2 litre cups?

outerspacextrapnel  said 37 days ago:

You can tell people to shut the fuck up at home with a higher possibility of people actually doing so.

tinyman  said 37 days ago:

the only thing cinema's got going for it is getting the releases first (i thought some people were experimenting with releasing to cinemas and dvds simultanously. what happened to that wonderful idea?) and 3D movies. is these new range of 3D movies technically impossible on the home widescreen? they need some kind of special polarised light?

i haven't even witnessed the new generation of 3D movies. anyone tried it? Beowolf or whatever else. worthwhile, interesting, or silly gimmick?

my neighbours' home cinema offers all of these options.

yes. i foresee in my future a lot more of bumming around at rich friends' houses watching dvds instead of going to the cinemas.

tangy_zizzle  said 37 days ago:

Film projection looks nicer to me than Blu Ray and Hi-def video even at 24p hd. Some of the hd tv jitter compensation makes film look disturbingly like video and/or ''real.''

Also, if you have a SDDS 7.1 system in an acoustically treated room in your house I'd like to listen.

Communal experience is also nice.

tangy_zizzle  said 37 days ago:

Why drink in your lounge room when you can drink at the pub? I guess some people are wired up the other way.

It's cheaper, you can choose the music and you can smoke indoors??

And wear no pants.

the cinema-going general public? they stink! i'd rather hang with my friends.

tangy_zizzle  said 37 days ago:

You don't go to the cinema with friends?

Peaches  said 37 days ago:

I hate going to the cinema, I only go when I'm invited and there's no way of watching it at home/de.foxus' house ;)

Hahaha! Yet another valid point.

tangy_zizzle  said 37 days ago:

Do you like restaurants? Meals can be more than just putting forkfulls of food in your face.

tinyman  said 37 days ago:

alright, i am neurotic or obsessive compulsive or mentally ill or whatever. like detective monk on tv. whatever happened to him? i'm not comfortable in crowds, i don't like being close to strangers, i avoid touching things other people have touched.

both fail to the awesome that is watching era defining moments like man landing on the moon and the start of the 1956 olympics with total strangers on the street staring into newfangled television shops.

no-one is broadcasting at 1080P, but they are doing 1080i.

foxtel HD is 720P.

k2  said 37 days ago:

the only things I know of that do 1080P at this point, are PS3's and Blu-ray players.

Those outdoor set ups sound just lovely.

whosgotthecrack?  said 36 days ago:

it does depend how many prints of the film the distributor invested in producing

a smaller film with fewer prints mean those are getting pretty much thrashed

a big film with a megabudget will make more prints and the quality will be better

but i've noticed that the films that work better on the big screen nowadays are either beautiful art films or blockbusters, although you can't trust people not to talk through at least the opening credits these days, probably because people are so accustomed to watching in their own homes

me, i can't wait to get a big fuck-off telly so that i can enjoy movies bigger at home

juicenewton*  said 36 days ago:

yay! My sister just installed a pool - I'm hoping it might be a summer of film watching on a lilo.

k2  said 36 days ago:

these guys get so into it - they buy real popcorn machines and discuss which oil gives the most authentic flavour. They also create an actual program, so will create a DVD for the night which includes a short film, then maybe a cartoon for the kids, then the feature - plus they even make their own Val Morgan ads!

for refreshments,, go to john's refreshment stand

I dont care how nerdy or lame you think that is - i reckon these guys fuckin rule.

whosgotthecrack?  said 36 days ago:

i love those home cinema enthusiasts :)

anyone who is willing to work out how to use older technology and embrace anachronistic culture as well... well, it almost goes without saying, but they shall inherit the earth

here you go juicenewton - get something like this happening:

I recreate the atmosphere of a melbourne backyard cinema by opening all the windows, removing my shoes and socks and setting the AC to 5 degrees.

k2  said 36 days ago:

heh - it's a summer thing, for sure. but you can always grab a doona or blankey and put it over you. and get one of those cafe gas heaters for about $150.

still I defy any of you to watch a movie at my place in summer, and NOT want to set up your own backyard cinema

Mo  said 36 days ago:

cinema - the popcorn is cold, the seats are uncomfortable, the coke is terrible, the sound is good, the big screen is good

home - the popcorn is hot, you can smoke spliffs, couches>movie seats

but i would pick gold class for the win

with home a close second

questionmark  said 36 days ago:

I will hold you to that k2. I'll ring 10 minutes before I arrive, to give you some notice.

Mo  said 36 days ago:

SheikYerbouti said yesterday:

Eh? you think it's good to do everything at home and never go out? Screw that, you need to move to a Parklea mcmansion estate then. Go to the cinema, get out in public, and have a night on the town.

OHHHHHHHHHHHH

BIG NIGHT ON THE TOWN!!!!!

why not play mini golf afterwards!!!

k2  said 36 days ago:

i like minigolf

Mo  said 36 days ago:

hey i don't mind it either....

just havin a laff

loveparade  said 36 days ago:

cinema is rubbish.....it will be redundant in a year or so, then ppl will start opening quaint little cinemas for old times sake, and the whole thing will be preserved how it should be.

charlesincharge  said 36 days ago:

nah, cinemas are just a line of business that bigger business run. as long as they're profitable (candy bar) they'll keep them chugging along.
