IT (hard drive) help

endtroducing...  said about 4 months ago  or at  11:49PM on Friday, July 4 2008.

hey there people who know things about computers. My laptop goes to the boot screen (toshiba logo) but then goes blank and conks out. hard drive sounds like it is spinning and doesnt die out, but it won't progress. Sometimes says something about a system file missing, other times nothing at all.

Can get to stage of booting from disc but dont want to use recovery disk and wipe everything, as I have yet to back up my mp3s (have done everything else).

Someone told me something about burning an image of the ubunto iso file to a cd and booting from that, and using it to access the hard drive, but i cant get it to boot from the ubuntu disc (unsure why or how).

any tips on how I might be able to access my hard drive and transfer files from it?>

ok, in regards to ubuntu, you have to have the version that doesn't require a hard install, i can't remember what it's called, they may have amalgamated the two cd's in newer versions, in which case you'r ok.
check the cd works in another computer, if it does, then it's possibly not your hard drive that is the problem, because the ubuntu only runs off your RAM iirc, options for getting the info off include disassembly and removal of the hard drive, then put it in an external usb case

so i got it to boot, and load the following screen but when i click to start it, a little window comes up saying loading linux kernel, and that goes up to 100% then it stops and wont go anywhere.

any ideas what this means? is it a memory problem?

reading what you are writing about here i am now positive i failed this subject last semester and with good reason i should do it again....
sorry if this gives you false hope in thinking i have offered a solution end

tried knoppix as well, same thing, both freeze in the stages of booting from the cd after loading the menu screen ok.

Any tips? really ant afford to take this to someone who charges 100 bucks an hour

it may well be a memory problem. it may be an overheating problem.

endtroducing...  said about 4 months ago:

dont think its an overheating problem. been not working for about 2 weeks, first time i turned it on and it wont load from the get go. and it freezes at the exact same point every time when i try and load ubuntu or knoppix

I was going to look for this video where this grandpa smashes up his PC. It's mildly amusing but I can't really be bothered. Hope this helps.

tadatadatada  said about 4 months ago:

it sounds like a RAM issue, but i'm no expert. but when i've had incorrectly installed or broken ram, it's got to the logo stage on bootup, and then stalled or crashed.

WOOO!!! fixed! took the plunge and opened up my laptop and took the second 512mb ram card out, and it started and i have all my data back!

tabula rasa  said about 4 months ago:

good to hear it's working! One of the menu choices on that Ubuntu start menu is Memory Test which will run your memory sticks through some diagnostic tests. That said, it looks like you've already found the faulty memory.

endtroducing...  said about 4 months ago:

yeh i tried that, and that froze up as well, which is what led me to try ripping our the ram
