Ok, I will have two free days off from a work trip in USA. This is a shot in the dark but does anyone know any good gigs/tours happening in the Texas/New Mexico neck of the woods on the 15-17 of August 08?

sure feral, that's a given, but what to listen to?
i assume by texas you mean austin (at least i hope so). showlist austin is THE website for gig listings. but you can also use the austin chronicle site (as well as pick up the free weekly in town) and occasionally use the austinist website too. but then again, just head on down to the sixth street/red river junction in the downtown area for your pick of live music each night. (the legendary emo's, mohawks and stubbs are all in the vicinity).
as for things to do - plenty! it'll be pretty steamy hot in tx, so a visit to barton springs pool is a must - its in the very pretty zilker park. if you've got access to a car, a drive out to hamilton pool is recommended, waterfalls and hiking also. the area known as south congress is great for shopping, especially vintage clothes and big ass texas boots. as is the area around the uni of texas - guadalupe st.
catch a flick at the alamo drafthouse - it's a great cinema. go record shopping at end of an ear - an awesome, slightly avant garde record shop that regularly has instores, as does waterloo records - who are the super megamart of indie record stores - bewilderingly well stocked.
in all, austin is just a good town to chill out in. super laidback etc.
friends who are actually from the dallas/fort worth area don't rate it much so i don't have any recommendations for it, but i do hear san antonio is not bad (close to the alamo i think) as is fredericksburg (pretty town) and i guess if you go to houston, you could probably seek out some chopped n' screwed musics (that's all i know it for).
as for food - mexican is pretty much the default, but thankfully it's very good! though i never did get around to getting a breakfast burrito. but texas is also known for the bbq - so lots of grilled ribs etc. if meat is your thing, bbq is the go. otherwise stick the mexican - lots of vegan/vegetarian options.
bailin' on the family already boogs?
Thanks traffic sounds, I've had a look at showlist austin, and then explored myspace's of the bands playing......
hmmmm
hi footcorns, yeah just for a week and a half
boogsie, keep checking showlist though, because the live music scene is pretty spectacular and the listings will get better. cex is recommended, but on the 17th, a place to bury strangers is playing! if you like your music loud in a shoegazey jesus mary chain meets a little post-metal doom....
you're just missing witch hats by a few days
