Flying Lotus

tangy_zizzle  said about 7 years ago  or at  2:15PM on Wednesday, June 4 2008 in music

New album ''Los Angeles'' is out next week: June 10th.

Flying Lotus is commonly identified as a hip hop producer, but his style is drawn from many genres, including jazz, electronic and Brazilian music. His hip hop beats are unique for their hazy, ambient sound, while his percussion is purposefully slightly off time, creating a messier, more organic atmosphere. Because of this, he is often likened to producers such as Madlib and J Dilla. His great-aunt is the late Alice Coltrane.

I thought there was a thread on him alreay, or perhaps some discussion in the dubstep thread. Anyway this album is pretty fine.

i may need to revisit the record. had a quick listen and found it a bit sterile actually, despite the organic nature etc.

A sample (unreleased?) track

I'm pissed off I missed his Feb tour.

djbollocks  said about 7 years ago:

This is the album that Prefuse 73 should have made after One Word Extinguisher.

tangy_zizzle  said about 7 years ago:

sympathy post. for myself!

djbollocks  said about 7 years ago:

Don't worry tangy, I'm sure the coolsie chats will be talking about it soon enough.

tangy_zizzle  said about 7 years ago:

I never really got in to Prefuse 73. Reckon I should have?

djbollocks  said about 7 years ago:

Maybe. One Word Extinguisher was an excellent album.

tangy_zizzle  said about 7 years ago:

I'll listen to it some day then. This thread rules.

shaun  said about 7 years ago:

please talk more about this album

djbollocks  said about 7 years ago:

It's very typical of a lot of the artists on warp like Clark, Prefuse 73 and Squarepusher, it has a bit more of a soul influence on it though. All the tracks on it are pretty short and catchy (probably another reason it reminds me of Prefuse 73).

shaun  said about 7 years ago:

great, thanks dj. feel like something new along these lines.

astralwerkor  said about 7 years ago:

So, uh, yeah, been meaning to check this out. Might do it now!

switchbladesisters  said about 7 years ago:

can't decide what I think yet... maybe i really like it, maybe it just reminds me of early 00s Ninja Tune stuff I enjoyed.. I get trafficsounds 'sterile' comment... I think if I was to compare it to One Word Extinguisher, that'd come out on top.

listens more

shaun  said about 7 years ago:

thanks for the recommendation tangy, i'm really diggin' it

tig  said about 7 years ago:

its good not as good as earlier releases for mine. his live show is bloody awesome...

shaun  said about 7 years ago:

this album works really really on the bus at dawn.

shaun  said about 7 years ago:

*really well

shaun  said about 7 years ago:

From Wikipedia

He is most famous (yet also uncredited) for the music in the many of the segues of Cartoon Network's Adult Swim

shit hey

Tramdriver  said about 7 years ago:

I never got into Prefuse, but I dig this. He reminds me a LOT bit of Daedelus; a bit glitchy and well more Warped. Good shit though.

maxkohane  said about 7 years ago:

Prefuse doesn't float my boat nearly as much as any Flying Lotus material. Perfect music for riding public transport.

New album leaked

hyperfuzz  said about 2 years ago:

it's quality

hyperfuzz  said about 2 years ago:

btw, polyester has LP in stock and are selling them early.

MelonHCST  said about 2 years ago:

After Cosmo it's back to more ''basic'' FlyLo which makes it sound like a bad thing. It's definitely still good but needs more listens.

percolator  said about 2 years ago:

Polyester leaked it?

trafficsounds  said about 2 years ago:

killed it last night at the hollywood bowl. outshone the headliners, animal collective. so much joy last night.

Loving this after a few listens. so glad thom yorke is barely recognisable on his track.

mrmagoo  said about 2 years ago:

just noticed he's playing that 'Let Them Eat Cake' thing at Werribee on New Years Day

interesting lineup for that

Jerm  said about 2 years ago:

Anyone go to the Werribee thing yesterday? No word of a sideshow?

MelonHCST  said about 2 years ago:

Wanted to but nah. The only other thing I saw him announced for was something in WA. Seems weird/crazy that he'd only come out for 2 shows

MelonHCST  said about 1 year ago:

$78 for the Forum show. Bit steep
