The graphic novels thread.

andyr  said about 4 years ago  or at  10:05PM on Wednesday, May 14 2008 in books

there's a ''comic book'' thread around, but it was started by some pelican hater dude and i didn't want to give it extra hits

anyway i've been enjoying y: the last man lately, and it's made me remember how much i love comics / graphic novels

however i am not really much of an expert, so can some hot comic nerds please give me some suggestions on what to read next!

trafficsounds  said about 4 years ago:

are you counting manga as part of this thread? akira is an amazing series to read.

andyr  said about 4 years ago:

i've never been too fond of manga to be honest, though i have read akira

andyr  said about 4 years ago:

(but yes manga suggestions welcome)

annehelena  said about 4 years ago:

I was reading about a graphic novel trilogy in The Big Issue last week...

Can't remember what it's called. About a pacifist sent to WWII, I think...?

andyr  said about 4 years ago:

z.z i removed you from dickhead to say this

get the fuck out of my thread

re-dickheads

z.z  said about 4 years ago:

poor andyr. keep reading the comics son.

andyr  said about 4 years ago:

anne is that issue still on the streets? i'll pick it up if so

annehelena  said about 4 years ago:

Not sure, Andy. It's the ''Big Sleep'' issue.

Even if this one's not out any more, buy a copy anyway!

I'll lend you this copy if it's not there.

andyr  said about 4 years ago:

i often do buy it, i really like it to be honest

has some great writers

and ta :)

z.z  said about 4 years ago:

well that was worth a thread ramadrudge.

andyr  said about 4 years ago:

here is a link to y: the last man wikipedia entry, too

annehelena  said about 4 years ago:

Yeah, this was the first time I've bought it, because this was the first time I had any money in my pocket whilst walking to uni.

I liked it! And the seller on Glebe Point Road is really nice, so I'm going to keep a little bit of change every fortnight to buy it from him.

kuroneko  said about 4 years ago:

I've just borrowed a GN from the library - 'Rent Girl' by Michelle Tea. Looks like it involves lots of lesbian sex.

andyr  said about 4 years ago:

let us know if it's good kuroneko!

In the last few weeks I read The Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns.

I'm hungry for more. I kinda wanna read Persepolis but I don't see the point after seeing the movie.

Block  said about 4 years ago:

That Last Man looks OK.
Kuro's sounds entertaining, too...

andyr  said about 4 years ago:

persepolis looks great, i think i'll get that one next

wikipedia here

Ouliposse  said about 4 years ago:

Lone Wolf and Cub is the most incredible serial imagery and text experience I've ever had.

russiancaravan  said about 4 years ago:

Persepolis is next on my list too, andy. Movie's coming out in a couple of months too.

I've just bought Daniel Clowes' Ice Haven from amazon.

My new Chris Ware Acme Novelty Library issue Lint has just arrived... Apparently it's rather brilliant.

And whoa, it is. Some of the best work he's ever produced, I reckon. Do you concur, C_S?

Collaterly_Sisters  said about 1 year ago:

Oh my god. In-freaking-credible. That guy breaks my heart a bit every time. One of the best things I've read this year.

untold/animals  said about 1 year ago:

Anyone got Nicki Greenberg's Hamlet?

rigid  said about 1 year ago:

Charles Burns' Skin Deep arrived in the old PO box today. Can't wait to sink into it.

Collaterly_Sisters  said about 1 year ago:

Odd. I just noticed Readings has a large pile of Jimmy Corrigans. Years ago you'd be hard pressed to see one anywhere. I think both copies I've had (one to replace the loaned-out copy that was never returned) were ordered in. Did it get on a school or uni reading list, or did folks get taste?

I can't help feeling like the worst kind of music snob who gripes when her favourite band suddenly becomes wildly popular.

Kit  said about 1 year ago:

It sold something like 100,000 in hardcover and has subsequently stayed in print in paperback for eight years, this has never been what you'd call a rare or hard to find book!

untold/animals  said about 1 year ago:

A handful of good video interviews/discussions with creators of graphic novels at The Wheeler Centre:

Nicki Greenberg on Gatsby
Greenberg with Shaun Tan, talking about Hamlet
• Jonathan Walker talks about Five Wounds

just read the new Clowes. Incredible. That guy is unbeatable.

ocelotl  said about 7 months ago:

Which new Clowes, how new? He's been pretty busy with the publications lately. Mister Wonderful? Wilson? The latest is The Death Ray, but that seems to be a reprint of Eightball 23, no? Also, look, Optic Nerve is back! Sheesh, only 4 years since the last issue.

goldbuttons  said about 7 months ago:

The Death Ray, which yeah, not so new if you keep up with the eightballs. I really really liked it after first read.

raven  said about 7 months ago:

Yeah, I looked at The Death Ray, but it seemed like it maybe had just a few pages added to essentially Eightball 23, so I passed.
On the other hand, I read Mister Wonderful when it was published online (was it inserts into the New Yorker or something similar?) and bought the hardcover. That was really wondeful.

New Optic Nerve is great too! I'd read the pornstar one in Kramer's Ergot but it was changed somewhat.

ocelotl  said about 7 months ago:

NY Times - it's still online actually, though I believe the book is a little different. That and Wilson are both amazing.

pollyphonic  said about 7 months ago:

Have only ever read one graphic novel series - it's the Buddha series by Osamu Tezuka

Really liked it

ocelotl  said about 7 months ago:

Ah, I'm up to Buddha Vol 7 (of 8) right now! Pretty epic.

pollyphonic  said about 7 months ago:

Yeah it's a ripper

rigid  said about 7 months ago:

Gotta get the Mister Wonderful book, haven't read any of it yet. Has anyone read the Conversations With Clowes book? (title is something like that). It's a comp of interviews over the years, really illuminating.

Fantagraphics just released a comp of Jim Woodring's Frank. I've never read any if his stuff so I think I might pick it up.

goldbuttons  said about 7 months ago:

Woah, never heard of this! Sounds like something I might have to purchase. Just read The AV Club interview, what a guy. Also, I preferred Wilson to Mister Wonderful, but he's all great, really.

I read Comic Book Holocaust by Johnny Ryan recently, that guy is hilarious.

Singular genius. Get it!

nishiki  said about 7 months ago:

mild infatuation with fables right now. fairly consistent storyline quality-wise (have just finished vol. 8), enough to keep me reading but i can see why others may find it lacking.

also have a copy of the walking dead lying around as well that i should get into soon but every time i've got a moment spare i just don't feel mentally prepared enough.

grey.k  said about 7 months ago:

Really dug Mandy Ord's new book, 'Sensitive Creatures'.

I saw the wonderful Jim Woodring at Melbourne Writers Festival but haven't read his new one yet. Also in the same session was Peter Arkle who was new to me; very happy to discover his Peter Arkle news.
