Anyone know when the program is scheduled for release? Any particularly tasty offerings you're already aware of? Searching to see if a 2008 thread had already begun I noticed a chat said on May 21 last year they had just seen the festival schedule - anyone know if there's a particular day I should be picking up the Age?
I had such a great time at last years MIFF, unemployed with a Gold Pass and managing to see some 42-odd movies, most of which were incredible. Stewster, I'd love you to join me at a few sessions this year...
I had really looked forward to / hoped the Tote documentary would be screened this year, but sadly, I doubt it's finished yet.
No idea, but wanted to say hi.
Hi, Richie!
Hey BLOCK !!
Any tragic, junkie, muso doco's I might see you at on MIFF this year?
Hello Mr Ramone.
Games night. Yeah baby!
Absolutely mate. Talked to Jack about it tonight, and Styviy today, and another mate Symon on Thursdee. Start planning on losin' ya pants...
Consider it done.
Monday night is Games Night at the Old Bar!
Do you have the game with the little cars and the roll of the dice?
What?
I didn't know that. Unfortunately Stewster probably has to get up at ridiculous o'clock, and I only like taking his pants...
Hey Flobs!!
How did Richie's film fest thread become all about games?
Rich, post a link to the program when it's out. All I saw last year was the Gun Club doco. The year before was the ''Treasures Of Long Gone John'' doco.
Yes, I cherry pick the good docos- one a year.
You didn't really wanna talk about MIFF, did you richie...
Hey Richie!
It was Stewster's fault!
I'm sure there'll be many a chat interested in the program so yeah, hopefully someone will find and post it as soon as it's released.
Can't believe I missed the Gun Club doco - you sure it was on last year, and not part of another festival of some kind? Like I said, I saw 42 films, and the Gun Club wasn't one of 'em! (which I would of course be interested in seeing)
Although I get up early to put my pants back on I'm happy to see a good film with you Richie. I'm bookmark this thread and keep an eye out.
Umm...if it wasn't part of the festival, it was sure part of an ACMI season...lemme check.
It was ACMI, block
kicks self for not going.... did see Gun Club once though...
yeah, reckon it was an ACMI thing, and for some reason I couldn't make it.
Excellent Stewster!
Do tell flobs. about the Gun Club. When? Where?
Some smartarse has all the goods here, gents
Some 1-night festival in Düsseldorf in '89 (can't remember the name), sonic youth, phillip boa & the voodoo club, and mudhoney were all on the bill. It was in an arena...

On the topic of I was sitting behind a real wiener at Funny Games on Thursday who had obviously seen the original enough times to find the film to be a slapstick comedy. I have seen the film a few times before, and yes some scenes are darkly humorous in very subtle ways, but for fucks sake, the majority of it is confronting and quite brutal viewing.
Also I have one session left on my pass that I plan on using tomorrow. Boiled down to Johnny Mad Dog and the Ashes of Time Redux. Help? Or does anybody have any other suggestions for whats playing tomorrow and isn't sold out?

What was funny games like ackroyd. It looked like a scene for scene remake of the original.
The Order of Myths was my biggest gamble and paid off- excellent!
It is pretty much bollocks, only one or two subtle differences but it has no real effect to the story. Tim Roth kills it.
Just got back form The Death of Mr Lazarescu. I saw somewhere that this was the ''comedy of the year''. Its not a comedy really. At all. Good film though. The direction and acting was superb.
long weekend was excellent, but dead-end drive-in has to be one of the greatest films ever. fuuuuuuuuuuuck
Dead End Drive In was awful. The sort of film that would be fun to watch with some mates, some beers and some bongs, but at a film festival!!??
Saw the Roman Polanski doco this morning which despite the arctic temperature of Greater Union was fantastic, and yesterday the Hunter S Thompson doco Gonzo which was fucking brilliant.
The Tiffany stalker film disturbed me so much that I was forced to have several alcoholic drinks immediately afterwards.
In other news, I bought the DVDs of Stone and Turkey Shoot.
any good extras on the stone dvd ?
The Night James Brown Saved Boston on Friday night was totally full of superfeelgoodness, with lots of humorous juxtaposition and cued places to laugh. Weird programming choice though, since it was made by/for VH1 and at times felt a bit like watching cable TV (was only 76 minutes too). But huh a good light choice... went home and spun I Don't Want Nobody to Give Me Nothing rather loudly on the turntable all night. Neighbors were impressed...
The Ozploitation catalogue is great for getting drunk to.
i've gotta track down brian trenchard-smith's other stuff... i wonder if Leprechaun in Vegas is any good...
I saw Hunger - an acting tour de force but a very slow movie...
I'm disappointed they didn't program any shorts before the feature films this year, especially with films that run for less than 90mins.
My highlights were Boy A, and Encounters at the End of the World. Also enjoyed The Wackness, Frozen River and The Desert Within.
Bill Plympton's Idiots and Angels was pretty good.
Features 'physiognomic transmutations'
this year's festival was a bit weak i reckon, nothing stood out for me except the 'ozploitation' films. they should have included norwegian horror film rovdyr, that one looks siiiiick.
i agree with barbedwirestar. i miss the days of catching interesting shorts before the main feature.
i saw a number of 75 minute features this year, could have easily accomodated shorts.

could not agree more. this is what makes a festival experience different from just going to any old cinema to catch a movie. plus, as far as aus films go, there are more shorts out there than features to see so helps to support up and comers and show stuff that you just wouldn't see anywhere else.
steps off soap box
I concur on the shorts. Even if they're not that great, they're usually worth seeing. We were only treated to Patti Smith singing smells like teen spirit. That was worth it.
Overall I was pretty disappointed with the festival. It's ALL about the money, and the art / etc. comes a distant last. There were some good films, but they seemed pretty mainstream, there weren't enough interesting / unusual ones for my liking.
A bit belated, but:
Good Stuff: Chatting to Brian Trenchard Smith. Also, the documentaries (Anvil!, Trumbo, Hold Me Tight, Let Me Go, Song Sung Blue).
Bad stuff: Greater Union almost incapable of ever running on time, that freaking Yalumba ad, the introduction of MIFF membership - revenue-raising bullshit in order that the privileged few with an extra $70 up their sleeve don't have to stand in the cold with the riff raff.
