Q&A - New Tony Jones TV show

email  said about 3 years ago  or at  10:51PM on Sunday, April 27 2008 in television

Q&A

Q&A is a new program which puts punters, pollies and pundits together in the studio to thrash out the hot issues of the week.

It's about democracy in action - on Q&A the audience gets to ask the questions.

It doesn't matter who you are, or where you're from - everyone can have a go and take it up to our politicians and opinion makers.

Energetic and opinionated - Q&A brings Australia's egalitarian and larrikin spirit into the studio - with your help.

Q&A is hosted by one of the ABC's most respected journalists - Tony Jones.

As host of Lateline, Tony is master of the political interview, but on Q&A he'll be letting you ask the questions.

Q&A is live to air - it's happening as you watch -and viewers at home and across the country can join in too - sending questions on-line and via SMS.

If you want a chance to ask the questions, register online now. Turn on and tune in to Q&A.

Starting May 22, 9:30pm Thursday nights

First guest is K-Rudd.

Q & A - with Tony Jones
Starts Thursday, May 22nd at 9.35pm

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd will be the first guest on ABC TV’s new interactive public affairs program, Q&A.

*Lateline presenter Tony Jones will host the **live, hour-long program, with the Prime Minister taking questions from the studio audience, as well as from viewers on-line and via text (sms).

Jones said Q&A would provide a chance for the PM to face the people six months after he was elected to office.

He encouraged viewers to fire in questions for the PM via the Q&A website at: www.abc.net.au/qanda

“Q&A will provide a unique opportunity for Australians everywhere to ask the Prime Minister questions they believe are vitally important to them.”

He said Q&A was an experiment in public democracy: “It’s going to be live, unpredictable and lots of fun.”

Following the Prime Minister’s inaugural appearance on Q&A, the program’s format from episode two onwards will revolve around five different panellists each week facing questions on a range of topical issues from the studio audience and viewers.

Tony Jones will be the ringmaster keeping the studio audience in line and keeping the five different panellists focused on the subjects up for discussion.

The Q&A panellists each week will generally include politicians from both sides of politics and three well-known but very different personalities that represent a cross-section of society.

Members of the public wishing to be part of the studio audience must register on the Q&A website at: www.abc.net.au/qanda

Q&A executive producer Peter McEvoy said the program’s aim was to encourage democratic participation.

“Q&A will have an urgency, immediacy and topicality not found in other public affairs programs,” he said.

“It’s an opportunity for viewers to ask political, business, social and other ‘leaders’ questions and get an instantaneous answer.

“Q&A is a program with serious intent, but that won’t stop us from having fun as well.”

*Tony Jones will continue to present Lateline twice a week.

** Broadcast live on ABC1 in Tas, Vic, ACT, NSW & Qld. Delayed ABC1 telecast in SA, NT & WA. Live streaming online available nationally.

Executive producer – Peter McEvoy; Series Producer – Lin Buckfield

Those studio audiences always remind me of the stacked studio audiences in Frontline.

Q&A will be streaming the program’s pilot episode on THURSDAY MAY 8th at 9.35pm.

100 invited audience members will gather in Studio 22 at Ultimo (with the yet to be finished set) with Tony Jones and our first panel including politicians Tony Abbott, Tanya Pilberserk, and Pru Goward.

You won’t be in the studio and you can’t watch on TV so why not go digital native and watch our live stream at abc.net.au/qanda.

AND while you’re watching why not go completely wild and sms a question or comment to the program 197 55 222 – include your first name and location (suburb/town) and we’ll try and use your question in the program.

Thanks,

The Q&A team

The other thing he was mortified by in Australia was 'Things Bogans Like', which he saw as a sick attack on poor people by the middle and upper middle classes.

I used to feel this way, but the CUB has shifted things. I'm not sure a Brit can really grasp the subtleties of the class/bogan issue in Oz. I barely can myself. I know there's a bit of a similar anti-Chav-bashing thing going on over there. Each country has their own twist on this...

montyclift  said about 4 months ago:

mona was a bit overrun on monday night, but the look on her face as sheridan starting spouting his usual nonsense was poetry.

she was great at the festival of dangerous ideas media debate on saturday - no notes, just spoke beautifully and passionate. i wish to bear her children.

and kate adey may be a great tv journalist, but in forums like that she tries to speak in slogans, headlines, and/or sound bites, and she tended to shit me both on telly and in person....

astrousersasmind  said about 4 months ago:

Nah, I love Kate Adie. She was great on Q&A and even better at the Wheeler Centre last night. She does speak in these slogans, but that's second-nature for someone who has years as a reporter I guess. Best Q&A ever since it was actually featuring smart people talking about interesting ideas. More of this! At times it was the most interesting thing I'd seen on the ABC in years.

pfinger18  said about 4 months ago:

Last week was awesome. But tonight it's back to normal with Julie Bishop and her crazy eyeballs.

NiteShok  said about 4 months ago:

Fuck this show is shit when politicians are on.

pfinger18  said about 4 months ago:

Some of the questions and comments from the audience last night made me cringe.

anonymous  said about 3 months ago:

darwin version tonight!

could contain gold.

pfinger18  said about 3 months ago:

Cool. I look forward to the panel debating the big local issues covered by the NT News.

pfinger18  said about 3 months ago:

Shit. That was depressing. Not for the usual reasons though. The crowd was lively, the questions were great, most of the panel was good and it was refreshing to hear different topics being debated. But the plight of the Aboriginal people in the NT puts us all to shame. Rosalie was right. Nothing has changed for the better.

I hope they do go back to Darwin for another Q&A. It felt like the show should have gone on for another hour.

Tony was great when he corrected that right wing loser for calling his wife a 'girl'.

probably the best and most fascinating q&a in aaages

what indeed! does he have a new young girlfriend he's trying to bond with or something? noticed that he took it off for a statement blip -- leather jackets are not lateline appropriate it seems.

TheBastard  said about 3 months ago:

I believe he lost a few kgs. Hence the leather. Doesn't *everyone *want to feel pretty after dropping a few dress sizes?

Kevin Rudd's daughter was interesting. Very idealistic.

Particularly gross given what he was saying last night about being blessed to have the love of a wonderful woman/family etc.

TheBastard  said about 3 months ago:

Turnbull's jacket and Abbot's little red speedoes I think that would be enough to turn me gay :o/

Punch  said about 3 months ago:

it was rather a turnbull / rudd love-in last night

iamthewalrus  said about 3 months ago:

Turnbull wore the leather jacket on one of the episodes last year.

I believe he's auctioning it off for charity.
