Getting international band support slots...

Molly & Atiba  said about 4 years ago  or at  4:59PM on Wednesday, April 16 2008 in music

Any tricks and tips? I've tried to get SWORDS on a couple, no such luck. Should we hire a cough manager, and try and get on a ''label'', or just keep playing shows, trying to tour and self-releasing stuff?

On a semi-related note, why is The Dillinger Escape Plan / Coliseum show $71.90?!?!?!

shineslikerubies  said about 4 years ago:

bring crowds. have hype. show promoters you are prepared to work to advertise your shows, as it will maximise their faith in your ability to increase the value of the show.

How often do international bands choose their own supports? Examples please.

CNTYBOLIX  said about 4 years ago:

the short cut is to get a manager who is a promoter. Or alternatively a manager who drinks with/works in the same office/sells drugs to the promoters.

Casiopias  said about 4 years ago:

I suggest a full condiment list. A lack of condiments is a definate no no in the hod dog industry.

alicia  said about 4 years ago:

just keep trying.

shineslikerubies  said about 4 years ago:

cntybolix is not entirely wrong. there are other ways around this, but first and foremost promoters need to know who you are, and care that they do.

Slight edit - should read:
- be a fucking pile of stinking shit
- buy kneepads

...and international supports will swing your way!

that's a lot of ha's.

I give it a single ha.

Loungey  said about 4 years ago:

lots of other bands are trying to get those supports remember. bands with radio play, or big fan bases etc. or who are booked by the big guns.

Once my band got to tour with Incubus. The band told us they picked us because we had a cool website. It was cool. (the website) But it was Harbour who originally put us forward for the tour.

It helps to be slightly more crap than the overseas band. No one likes to be shown up as the half-arsed posers with no actual ideas that they are.

Ah, the irony. So my band is out-dated, but his band (assuming he is in Little Red) is playing re-hashed fifties and sixties rock?

pot. kettle etc?

ben  said about 4 years ago:

hey Swords dudes - im interested to know what support slots you are actually after? id say that being from A-town may well be at your advantage due to the fact that there aren't that many bands (or as many as here in melbs) so keep playing and people will take note.

Woollen Kits  said about 4 years ago:

All I know is, that when John Maus comes here, Dachen WILL be supporting. (h)

tig  said about 4 years ago:

I think at least in melbourne having play on local radio is a pretty important part of it, Nick got alot more supports (Caribou and Mum) after the album of the week for the shipwreck LP on Triple R.

it shows you can get asked to do supports without the coolsie record label behind you or a manager/booker!

Go Triple R! bloody legends

HeteroAsFuck  said about 4 years ago:

Shit, I reckon if your good and people come to your shows then you deserve a support slot.
Usually some sort of word of mouth buzz around town will increase your chances.

In my old (Melbourne) band, I scored a few good international supports from Sydney bookers purely cause we had a song or 2 on Dribble tray at the time. Really they didn't realise that down here we weren't exactly big pullers by any means, and half the time we fucked up and sucked a bit.

Alternatively, get a young hip well connected record label to sock cock for you. At the end of the day, who cares who you've supported anyway (Sheesh, I never used to think like that)

feralmedia  said about 4 years ago:

Molly&Atiba, I was totally joking. Sorry if I got your hopes up for an easy comeback. :-(

switchbladesisters  said about 4 years ago:

email artists directly and ask. I know a few people this has worked for.. there are a lot of international artists who like to be involved in selecting supports.

kandos  said about 4 years ago:

although it is highly questionable whether the local supports actually influence the decisions of punters, promoters are generally looking for a band with some sort of established ability to pull a crowd at their own shows.

there are, basically, two avenues available to those who are hell bent on garnering international support slots. either establish a local following significant enough to be noticed by independent promoters around the country, or swallow your pride, realise you suck and sign with premier/harbour or a similar refuge for parasites.

switchbladesisters  said about 4 years ago:

I've found the best bands to put in support slots are often smaller establishing acts I am really into- I've found more punters/friends etc will show up early to see them than if I put on a tried and true 'name' act.

also the smaller act are more likely to do their own promo.. often a larger, constantly gigging band will just see it as another show and not really bother to tell anyone

Sweat Lung  said about 4 years ago:

Fly to another country that way you are playing with peers not playing support slots, while the airfare maybe expensive the 80 bucks you get will be on par with what you would get here but the punters will be paying 10 bucks to get in not 40.

Same thing as what humanityisthedevil said 14 days ago really.

and haircuts. spend shitloads of money on haircuts.

alicia  said about 4 years ago:

ben, i don't think being in adelaide really makes it much easier. there may be less bands, but for the most part it still ends up being one or two bands that keep getting the supports until a couple more bands form and take their place.

the other thing is that a lot of tours don't even come to adelaide, so there are fewer shows to try and get on.

runoutgroove  said about 4 years ago:

I reckon you're on the money here. Even more so, these 'established' or 'flavour of the month' bands just phone in their performance on the night. I can remember seeing a few bands supporting great international bands and look like they're treating it like a rehearsal. Stick any number of other bands in the spot and not only are they more likely to do some extra promo but they'll at least make a bit of an effort on the night.

yeah, that's definitely a factor

puts hand up

An old band of mine supported a certain international act twice in a row. The first was slung to us as a favour by the promoter, an old associate of mine (although I did my share of sucking up, and it helped that I was known to some of the band already). The second time I just emailed the singer and asked. Premier were on the phone the next day....
