these threads always begin with 'i can't believe there's not a thread about insert your favourite band.' but seriously dexys are so fantastic, their albums are motherfucking majestic. kevin rowland is a killer vocalist, spread some dexys love!

No!
have you listened to any of the albums? this is blue-eyed soul at its finest.
No I've only heard Come On Eileen and seen em dressed as bums on the Young Ones. I don't beleive you! Dude sounds likek Robert Smith if he was more annnoying can you imagine that!
i've heard its trendy to yell out 'you've lost your soul kevin'
Did he sell out or something. Did he used to sound like James Brown or Spencer Davis before Come On Eileen?
i think rowland has definitely got his own vocal style happening, he's definitely influenced by punk as well as soul. in my opinion, he probably sounds most like van morrison, which is probably the reason the cover of jackie wilson said works well.
they released 'projected passion review' last year. was a bbc radio concert from just before rowland sacked the horns and went for the tramp look with fiddles (ie, come on eileen). its fabulous.
It is slightly disappointing to me that many people only know of Dexy’s as the band that did Come On Eileen when they offered so much more.
Searching for Young Soul Rebels is a seriously brilliant debut album – one of my all-time favourites. Geno, Burn It Down, Seven Days Too Long….every track is great! The horn section is fantastic!!
Rowland’s’ genius is arguable but he is definitely talented, without doubt eccentric, and smart enough to surround himself with quality musicians for each Dexy’s incarnation.
If there’s one band I wish I could have seen live it’s the Dexy’s, Searching for Young Soul Rebels line-up.
These words could be incorrect – I hope you are less confused.
agreed 100%
now to google some pictures of rowlands missing septum...
thirded on searching for the young soul rebels.
one of the great red wine drinking albums of all time.
rowland was a very strange man. he refused to speak to the rock press in the early 80s and used to take out ads in the NME and others instead.
you'd fall about laughing listening to such self-important crap but the music was so good.
come on eileen is okay but only passable when compared with the first album.
I recently read Young Soul Rebels, which Rowland refused to have anything to do with, and suprisingly it mentions little about about his use of drugs. In fact it spends more time on his refusal to allow band members to drink before or during shows.
Although Rowland is not involved several band members were interviewed. It's a good read.
Dexys Midnight Runners - Young Soul Rebels by Richard White:
Dexys Midnight Runners were one of the most misunderstood and overlooked groups of the 1980s. At the centre of it all, their front man and originator Kevin Rowland, with a reputation for maintaining control and domination over Dexys at all costs.
In the first comprehensive history of the band, author Richard White has conducted in-depth interviews with former members on the experience of being a Midnight Runner. He sheds new light on the Dexys legend including the fractious period of writing and recording the classic Come on Eileen, one of the biggest selling singles in UK history and its parent album Too Rye Ay.
While celebrating their achievements on record and on stage, this book also uncovers aspects of Rowland's working methods in the studio and the latest Dexys re-invention, championed on a triumphant tour in 2003.
never read it, but I've seen the movie.
i must have a look at it.
i've tried to sing come on eileen on singstar and it's nigh on impossible for ordinary mortals.
never stopped packs of inebriated pommy travelers
i'm now going to go to the library and get them to find this bio.
Good luck, drugshakehands. I had to order my copy through Amazon.
Several members from the Searching for Young Soul Rebels era of the band went on to form The Bureau (remember 'Only for Sheep'?), and whilst not as good as Dexy's, their album is well worth a listen – even though the production hasn’t dated well.
i just bought a $10 cd of the young soul rebels.
here's a rare breaking of the silence on kevin's days with the killjoys
This is the look of theirs that I like- fuck that ragtag gypsy shit.

ah yes, that dark irish rebel look.
Kevin had a keen interest in fashion and ruled with an iron-fist when it came to the look each incarnation of the band was to adopt.
He was a hairdresser before he became a working musician.
Did Mick Talbot's fleeting presence have any tangible effect on the band?
I don’t think so, bames.
Though he did go on to be a part of The Bureau - where it appears, to my ears anyway, he had more impact.
His best work was with The Merton Parkas.
geno is an awesomely fantastic song.
will anyone ever work out what he was thinking here?
It's clear from the photo that this guy has got balls!
the album is actually quite a good listen...i think alan mcgee used it as a fuck you to sony when creation got swallowed up by them
an outrageous sense of fashion to be sure...
i got home, poured a glass of red wine and put this record on.
I refuse to break up with you
i've tried to sing come on eileen on singstar and it's nigh on impossible for ordinary mortals.
i kicked ARSE on this one.
you must have big lungs foxus.
seven days are too long, without you baby, come on back to me...
baha bhahahahh bahahahhahahahhh (insert horn section here)
On a whim I'm checking out non-come on eileen songs and yes, Kevin Rowland is indeed an amazing vocalist, if a little Robert Smith-ish. Can't abide the dungarees or panties comeback.
bump.
discuss how you can go from the genius of 'thankfully, living in yorkshire, it doesnt apply', to the commercial success of the eileen overalls, to the self-indulgent shitfight of 'don't stand me down'....
WOW, there actually is a thread!
*Mess and noise please delete all other threads; this is the only one I’ll ever need to post on again.
*Statement may be a lie.
cocaine
possibly a contributing factor, but he was a nutjob egomaniac even before success.
Kevin Rowland
Oh, and this is great if you haven't seen it: Kevin Rowland resurrected
Hell of a drug
Are these the people you pay to get you dexies in the middle of the night?
I love this photo:
and the coke didn't become that much of a big deal for him until after the split (if you consider going broke and being homeless to be a big deal, and not justified funtimes)
Love that duffel coated docklands look above. Interferon mentioned The Bureau a whiles back, and I really dug their album as well. Some ex-dexy's guys complete with Mick Talbot (later to join Style Council) on keys. Watch ''Only For Sheep'' on Youtube - killer.
btw - anyone recognise
a couple of familiar faces in this snappy bunch?
still regret not buying the one and only copy I ever saw of that, in Ashwoods that time someone obviously got fired from Sony and sold the entire Creation discography in promo form
I bet filterfeed got it
I've heard intersting things about that album. I'll have to check it out one of these days.
I still say that the gear he's wearing on the cover looks a damn sight better than the goddam overalls.
Are their albums any good?
when he says 'now you have grown' is this to indicate he has been lecherously eyeing her since she was toddling around or is he saying now that you are 'our mothers' he wants to dick her up and down? or is it just that she really fills out that dress?
