there is no generic thread for this band

i was watching them live @ the st kilda festival on the weekend

seriously - how fucking good is this band

every song they played was a classic

let alone how well they played as a live band - they were just absolutely killer

i always liked their songs n stuff - but what a fucking DEMON live band

montyclift  said about 3 years ago:

dave faulkner - one of the most underrated songwriters and voices in the country.

Bittervictorian  said about 3 years ago:

My Girl is such an awesome song!!! One of many.

And the clip pays some mad props to Glebe many years before Timmy Rogers. Also, is that Henry Szeps (from 'Mother and Son') in the pub in the clip???

filterfeed  said about 3 years ago:

for some reason, i've never seen them live. but so many killer, killer songs.

Mo  said about 3 years ago:

same here filterfeed

now i wish i had

fkn oath monty - i'd put him up in the paul kelly status of national treasure songwriters

voidster  said about 3 years ago:

yes

I really like kingsmill's drumming and shepherd is a very fine guitarist

the songs aren't half bad either :)

Fielding Mellish  said about 3 years ago:

Mars Needs Guitars and In Blue Cave are awesome (as are the other 5). Brad Shepherd is a guitar God!

I've seen them maybe four times. Including the St Kilda Festival in Feb. One of the better live bands I've seen.

Mo  said about 3 years ago:

dude brad shepard is a fucking gun guitarist

i soooo regret not seeing them live

montyclift  said about 3 years ago:

1000 miles away. true greatness.

littlearch  said about 3 years ago:

you'll probably get another chance, mo

i love some songs for nostalgia value. never seen them live...have i? i might have

filterfeed  said about 3 years ago:

they'll play again, mo, they'll play again.

i was tempted by st. kilda festival appearance. but then i remembered that it was in st. kilda.

Mo  said about 3 years ago:

i know this is gonna sound weird - but they were heaps heavier live too

voidster  said about 3 years ago:

i've seen them only twice..the first time was about 20 years ago or so in london. i'd never heard of them and this aussie bloke i drank with raved about them so we went and saw them.

20 odd years later i saw them at seagulls on the gold coast - they were still fucking great!

selected works  said about 3 years ago:

I saw them play a great, super heavy gig at thebby around '93, '94. They played over two hours of grinding. Fantastic.

montyclift  said about 3 years ago:

they've never really had a backlash, either. faulkner claims it was becuase they were never the biggest band in the country, but always around and being honest about what they did.

also love that built into their deal when they sold the song to the nrl were good seats at every state of origin game. true believers.

Mo  said about 3 years ago:

haha thats gold

grogblog  said about 3 years ago:

You need a frontlash for a backlash

questionmark  said about 3 years ago:

they also manage to straddle both the meathead and coolsie markets rather successfully.

Dan_Crad  said about 3 years ago:

Well put, qm - one of the rare times that both 'markets' simply 'get it'.

slothman  said about 3 years ago:

one of my all time favourite bands. stoneage romeos is an absolute classic. the trashing that stoneage cameos attempted was wholly reverted by persian rugs version of be my guru (although dan kelly's death ship is pretty cool)

seen them live a bunch of times and they ALWAYS bring it, the melbourne spit the dummy show was awesome. there is a live at the wireless version of 'Big Deal' on that 3CD pack called bite the bullet that simply thumps like fuck with an amazing noise out at the end.

bamesjaker  said about 3 years ago:

Bring back Roddy and Kendall. And James.

The facebook pages says nothing about an accident.

Ladies and gentlemen, sorry to break some bad news: we're gonna cancel the next two shows (Shellharbour and Campbelltown) so that I can recover my health and not permanently damage my voice. We'll do our best to reschedule those shows asap. Refunds will be available for advance ticket holders - please spread the word. ...I'm sorry for the inconvenience, Dave

So obviously the story got a bit embellished along the way

Does anyone know if they have any support bands playing with them on their tour at the moment (particularly in Canberra)?

Last night was The Shivering Indies and The Lazys. Kind of strange they brought two interstate supports which weren't advertised anywhere.

So it's not a Richard Ashcroft 'sore throat' then?

Sister Morphine  said about 1 year ago:

The Gurus are an awesome band. It still amazes me that Dave Faulkner is not often mentioned in the same sentences as Neil Finn and Paul Kelly as one of our truly great songwriters.

Brad is a total guitar god - always loved his Concerto For Choppers. Brad fans should also check out the Fun Things. I could never afford the very rare Fun Things EP as a teenager, though did manage to pick up an 80's French pressing which only included Lipstick and Savage. The whole EP is now available on Myspace - awesome :-)

Mark Kingsmill is a rock and hits those tubs so fucking hard! I honestly think Rick Grossman is the greatest Australian Rock n Roll Bass player of all time with a sound that is just pure liquid lead.

I think Stoneage, Mars Needs Guitars, Crank, Blue Cave and even their new one Purity of Essence are a quintessential part of any Aus-Rock collection.

I went to the Canberra leg of that tour....was one of the worst gigs I've ever been to! The gurus were strangely off, Red Kross were ok....not great though, & You Am I were awful. I'd not seen You Am I before & had heard 1 billion times how they were the best live band going around....not that night they weren't. They spent 45 minutes blaming their equipment.

was this at ANU littlesmoke? that's where i caught that tour and i remember it being pretty flat and nowhere nowhere near as good as it looked on paper

littlesmoke  said about 1 year ago:

It was indeed at ANU,,,,& yep, on paper it looked like a winner...just never lived up to it. I'd seen the Guru's many times previous to that & they had always been amazing...& have seen them several times since also without disappointment.....it was just that one night. I have a theory about bands putting in half arsed performances & how often that happens to be in Canberra.

interesting, that's the only time i've seen them and being more a fan of the james baker era on record i just figured that they were a bit plodding in the present day - funny how a single duff experience can become personally ''definitive'' - i do remember brad s was sick or something, he wasn't singing at all i don't think

slothman  said about 1 year ago:

have we already mentioned how much better they were than anyone else on the bill at both Sound Relief gigs? brad sheppard even did the splits! rock legends!

crackwhore  said about 1 year ago:

Dave Faulkner is on 'My First Gig'' musicmax now, interesting stuff.

Idratherdance  said about 1 year ago:

anyone got a ticket they want to sell for Friday @ the Corner?

Casias  said about 1 year ago:

still recovering.....fuck, what a night !

slothman  said about 1 year ago:

details!

Arthurly  said about 1 year ago:

The Gurus will be pleased to know that at the Australian Reptile Park near Gosford, they have conditioned the alligators to feed to music. When the music plays, they know it's snack time. The tune that rallies them into the lagoon before chowing down on tomahawked chicken carcasses?

''Leilani'' by the Gurus! Ahoongawe, Ahoongawa! UNgaaawaaaaaah!

slothman  said about 1 year ago:

awesome song

slothman  said about 2 months ago:

an old favourite that i've been listening to alot lately is the ''Doppleganger'' CD of live at the wireless stuff that came out in the Bite The Bullet Director's Cut. amazing band.

did anyone else hear dave faulkner singing My Girl on the conversation hour. he wasn't happy with it but it sounded ace. best australian songwriter
