right... does anyone know what that thing circled in red is actually called? The kind of stylised line break, and is there anywhere i can get my hands on some.
I've searched a few font sites but came up with diddily squat!

get the font 'adobe wood type ornaments'
a swash
A swash is a typographical flourish on a glyph, like an exaggerated serif
putting swashes on the top and bottom of a block of text is called 'buckling'
cheers goalattack,
that seems to be the kind of thing i'm after, but diddn't really want to pay.
Know of any free equivalents?
nope.
hmmm....bugger.
might be included in this
cheers horse, looks promising
what program you using? if you're in illustrator, try WINDOW >>> BRUSH LIBRARIES >>> DECORATIVE TEXT DIVIDERS
this?
A question for the graphic designers.
If I'm sending artwork for a half page B&W ad in streetpress what file format, image size and dpi should I use?
either a press quality PDF or a jpeg (300dpi)
the streetpress should give you specifications
why didn't you justy email me you goof. but yeah, what rachel said
build your flyer in RGB mode then change to CMYK when you are ready to send it to print
OK so if I save as jpg at 300 dpi the file size is about 2MB. Does that sound about right?
yep. 2MB is about right.
if artwork is black and white - make sure the file is GREYSCALE.
and does RGB / CMYK matter with B&W?
ah, thanks lowercase. you answered my question before i even asked it.
thanks to all for your help.
rgb > cmyk for bw artwork?? jpg? yeah it'll print. the quality will suffer though. Maybe not to the average reader, but you'll notice it.
For b&w i'll chime in for the anal prepress guy here and ask that you set your images to a duotone black and white and your vectors to spot black.
go with a pdf, your type will remain crisp. Even with newsprint you will notice the difference if theres some degree of contrast. Rachel is right tho, "Press quality" is a preset thats good for most uses.
But im being anal here. The printers will print whatever you give em, sometimes they'll even fix things for you.

Can anyone tell me how to save an image so it looks good when is uploaded to facebook?
For example:
How do I stop the red colour from being mottled and blotchy? I've tried saving as a jpeg and gif at a few different sizes. All the images look fine before I upload them but they turn to shit when they're uploaded to FB.
what size is the original image? and what format?
FB has downscaled your image. What was it originally, and does FB have some upper limits on what image sizes you can upload? Looks like a low res link to your original.
Original image is 500 pixels wide. I've tried it as a gif and jpeg.
Here's what it looks like before I upload it to FB
See what the dimensions of the pic that's uploaded to facebook is, take the 'good' image and resize it to that and upload
if you're uploading it to facebook, the longest side of the image should be 600 pixels max and save it as a jpeg 85 quality. facebook will still recompress it but that's your best shot at having it not look like shit.
Yes, FB fucking shit up? Who knew? With apologies/acknowledgements to Goldfoot.
anyone know the best way to grab high-res images from HD video? i'm currently using MPEG streamclip, but was wondering if there's a better way?
• Buy 42'' plasma screen
• Connect to Mac via Thunderbolt or whatever
• Grab
…thanks.
Sorry. :(
I don't actually understand if this and this are free downloads or if you have to buy them.
VLC has a snapshot feature.
what is your source? files or disc? what's wrong with just screengrabbing?
i have very large (50gb) .mov files.. VLC takes a 72 dpi screengrab.. am wondering if there's anyway to get better quality images?
and i'm looking to get print-quality images... might just have to keep images small
How 'HD' are the videos though? Chances are you have a monitor that is larger than their true pixel-by-pixel size.
