Drone / Ambient / Electronic

runoutgroove  said about 3 years ago  or at  9:36PM on Monday, March 24 2008 in music

There might be a bit of overlap with the Doom / Stoner / Psychidelic and Drone / Folk / Psychedelic threads but maybe something a little different is needed.

A thread for stuff like Kranky, Touch, 12k, Type etc etc

Anyone grabed the 7''s in the Touch series?

new William Basinski reissue too

the river

William Basinski - The River 2CD

From Boomkat A double-disc reissue of his 2002 AM classic 'The River', Baskinski originally sculpted his shortwave symphony back in 1983 with little more than some anonymous Muzak tape-loops and a static blighted radio - before he set about slowing down his raw material, mixed them live to cassette from two 50s Norelco reel-to-reel decks and peppered it with a coat of shifting shortwave radio static. The result? Stunning to the power of 10. With each disc containing a single extended piece (c.45 minutes), Basinski delights in stripping away the listeners notion of time or space by denying access to the accepted markers - leaving all the senses acutely focused on the ever-morphing sound excursion before you. Of the two, disc one is the more conventional; wherein a sonorous synth pulses gently over the static-couched backdrop, whilst pin-pricks of daylight are permitted through the bellicose fog in the form of antiquated, distant strings. Swapping the emphasis on the second, Basinski fully embraces the notion of static - dissolving what must have once been solid broadcast structures in an ocean of fuzz, drawing parallels with Tod Dockstader and redefining the notion of aural decay. Basinski's masterpiece; no debate.

There's a free remix album by mwvm posted up on Archive.org, by Silber Records, but the link seems to be down at the minute. Bah.Here's the blurb anyways;

''Silber Records released mwvm's debut album rotations in the fall of 2007 & now we are pleased to give you a collection of remixes & reworkings from some close friends. The remixes include a shimmering mass of complex jarring textures by the mighty Astral Social Club, pulsing layers of precision amplitude modulation from Sonicslice, & Zac Keiller doing an alt-country cover version of context. where?

Track Listing:
1. rotations remix by Astral Social Club (http://www.myspace.com/astral_social_club)
2. celestial motion remix by Sonicslice (http://www.sonicslice.org)
3. negative pole remix by Scott Solter (http://www.scottsolter.com)
4. windows remix by Moral Crayfish (http://www.moralcrayfish.com)

Tape have a new album coming out, and Hapna are reissuing their first two albums as well. Also just discovered the other day they did an album with Minamo last year. The track on Myspace is great, I'm attempting to download it with little success. Unfortunately it seems to only be available on a Japanese label that I wouldn't know how to order from.

I will definitely try and get that Basinski reissue

fastcanoe  said about 3 years ago:

I'm hoping Windy & Carl do something again soon, last album was stunning. And yah, that Basinski reissue will be well worth tracking down.

kazpatafta  said about 3 years ago:

Dedications to Flea, FC? Cos that was really great.

fastcanoe  said about 3 years ago:

Nada, The Dream House.. though I did grab the double cd version with Dedications to Flea included which I adore. Such a great way to remember their pet.

kazpatafta  said about 3 years ago:

ah cool, have to check it out. I also have the split they did with Landing, I haven't heard anything from them in a fair while too.

fastcanoe  said about 3 years ago:

Haven't heard of that one, will have to track it down for a listen. They haven't updated the news portion of their website for ages, hoping its all on the good though.

shaun  said about 3 years ago:

that Basinski (the River) isn't as stand out as his loop-based stuff. if you already own a small fraction of the Machinefabriek back-catalogue there's probably no need.

runoutgroove  said about 3 years ago:

yeah, who can keep up with those Machinefabriek releases! That is another artist who should offer MP3 discography discs along with MV&EE.

fastcanoe  said about 3 years ago:

I'd also like to add Default Jamerson in here, just had a listen again to his 3'' False Scenario #2 add it is fucking lovely. Live sets of late have been some of my most enjoyable outings in town also. Find some of his material and have a listen.

hellosQuare  said about 3 years ago:

you guys should have nabbed up the lampse 3'' compilation that machinefabriek did. it was super cheap from boomkat during their sale. bloody awesome. the freiband and machinefabriek disc on low point sounds amazing !

runoutgroove  said about 3 years ago:

i picked up a couple of machinefabriek albums during the last boomkat sale. has anyone got that 2CD remix album?

ProDelgado  said about 3 years ago:

Today I am mostly listening to Rameses III - Basilica.

Very nice indeed.

anok  said about 3 years ago:

i've been listening to steinbruchel's basis. pretty great really. damn it was amazing to experience live in brisbane's powerhouse last year!

and i'd second fasty's default jamerson call.

ProDelgado  said about 3 years ago:

I need to listen to more Basinski, all I had was the Disintegration Loops, but I downloaded some more stuff last weekend.

shaun  said about 3 years ago:

you need to get Garden of Brokeness by Basinski. it's beautiful.

Gareth Hardwick's last 3 inch on Low Point was awesome!

trafficsounds  said about 3 years ago:

not sure if it's droney enough for this thread, veers closer to IDM ... but has anyone heard the new record from porn sword tobacco? i've only just come into the last album 'explains freedom' which i like a lot, the short vignette style tracks appeal to my short attention span

trafficsounds  said about 3 years ago:

and by new, i meant last, not new new...

This thread's now eating posts in the middle, so lots of awesome recommendations are disappearing. If you know you've pimped stuff that's since disappeared, why not stick it in the new thread?

anok  said about 2 years ago:

Ø anyone?

kelele  said about 2 years ago:
