For US$1.65 billion, or something like $2.23 billion in the local currency.
So anything that infringes copyright will be yanked now?

good profit
holy fuckoly
Probably get around it the same way they do with images on their search:
"This footage may be scaled down and subject to copyright"
not a cash deal though ... all stock
downloading bad brains @ cbgbs from youtube
wooooooooot
circle the wagons, there's a lawyers coming.
So anything that infringes copyright will be yanked now?
There goes... everything.
sorry MH but why do you say only stock like it is a bad thing?
i wasn't, ohyea
i was responding to
"good profit"
really, they haven't made any profit from this deal in cash terms ... just a shitload of really valuable stock
good ROI
google stocks better than cash!
oh, still a person profit for youtube owners.
that sentence doesn't parse
oh. still a personal profit for youtube owners.
ok, next time i add info to a thread, i'll be sure and do it in a positive manner for all involved
In the last two days, since rumours of the deal started to spread, Google's stock has increased in value to the tune of US$4 billion.
What's the next YouTube?
huh?
"What's the next YouTube?"
mono.whatevz.net
make me an offer, google!!!
poor horse always has to be contrary for the sake of the argument :(
i can't see what googles going to do with it, they already had google video, youtube never had any technologly leverage, i don't think they own the videos posted..
It's just to get the traffic, isn't it? If that many people use a site, as with Myspace, a Google or News Ltd can always find a way to profit, can't they?
they could always just dismantle it
"i can't see what googles going to do with it, they already had google video"
to stop someone else buying it
buy the competition, and you don't need to worry
and who is being contrary, i've said nothing against this deal, or anyone's statements
just adding more information, that the deal was done for stock
stop looking for malice in informative statements
It's just to get the traffic, isn't it? If that many people use a site, as with Myspace, a Google or News Ltd can always find a way to profit, can't they?
thats the current thinking, who knows if it actually works.
with myspace being worth 1.5 billion in a few years as they're saying.
internet bubble 2: electric boogaloo.
Yeah, I don't think those folks understand the adblocker thing, do they.
There is no money in it, and this could all be just another bubble waiting to burst.
If traffic doesn't equal sales, advertisers will stop paying for space, surely. And I can't see how smileys and ringtones make any money to begin with...
Snap, anon.
nony said: "i can't see what googles going to do with it".....
they're launching youtuboogle.com very soon
other rumours suggest gootube.com
"Yeah, I don't think those folks understand the adblocker thing, do they."
a lot of people don't adblock google ads, since they're non-intrusive, targeted, and mostly useful
Yep, text ads mostly get by.
Most people will put up with banners, but you've already lost a few.
Anything that makes a noise and it's not cubicle-safe.
Pop-ups are blocked by all modern browsers.
It's a sliding scale of obnoxiousness.
gosh i wonder how long until someone stupid like Fairfax does its dough buying mess and noise or the in the mix empire.
it makes a big difference when the google ads are gone though..
haha buying inthemix.. haha
gosh i wonder how long until someone stupid like Fairfax does its dough buying mess and noise or the in the mix empire.
Destra bought thescene (general dance site) and tranzfusion (er, trance site) recently. For stock, though.
gootube.com will be reserved for the adults only version, T_F.
Even so, it's not just a case of not seeing them. I just ignore ads.
I don't think I've ever "clicked on our sponsor" in the history of internerding.
So where's the revenue come form?
gootube.com 's already taken, though it looks like by squatters.
"I don't think I've ever "clicked on our sponsor" in the history of internerding.
So where's the revenue come form?"
the remarkably large percentage of internet users who are not modi
Modi, someone is. They measure clickthrough rates and all.
Also, advertisers are getting in front of eyeballs anyway - think about how many print ads you ignore. Same thing.
our competitors have adworded the google search for our company.
i find it funny.
The revenue comes from the less savvy folks that haven't been exposed to so much bullshit.
"ooh, I can work from home and make lots of money"
"ooh, I'd love an american visa"
And I can't see how smileys and ringtones make any money to begin with...
You haven't seen the hundreds of thousands of kids walking around flicking through ringtones?? Geezus.
Good ROI
I always forget to factor in the "Idiot Quotient"
Obviously.
Heard this a few days ago and have been waiting for it, really. I heard ages ago that apparently youtube was set up by a bankrolled group specifically to sell off, and if you think of the bandwidth & server costs, it would have cost a mint to run.
I think they even have that little clause that what gets put up on youtube can be sold by youtube?
I reckon its a good buy, well, a better buy than myspace at any rate. Youtube has the better UI over Google (IMO), the better branding, the better exclusive "celebrity youtuber" content, and in terms of content copyright Google can keep all the bootleg stuff as they have a pretty good legal team already defending similar turf.
"I don't think I've ever "clicked on our sponsor" in the history of internerding.
I know plenty of companies spending big bucks (justifiably) on SEM, including mine :)
And I can't see how smileys and ringtones make any money to begin with...
blueskyfrog (aussie company) have been turning over seven figures for 8 years now, you only need to look at the back 10 pages of tabloid mags to see someones got enough money to advertise ringtones. And there are few overheads other than data transfer and some licensing. Lowest common denominator stuff.
google video has the same crap youtube does anyway.
wasnt youtube next on the hit list after kazaa/sharman networks?
yes, this was quite the shock. so i won't have to look up stuff on google video now as well.
wasnt youtube next on the hit list after kazaa/sharman networks?
for what?

YouTube deletes 30,000 files after Japanese group complains about copyright infringement
The Associated Press
Published: October 20, 2006
TOKYO The popular video-sharing site YouTube deleted nearly 30,000 files after a Japanese entertainment group complained of copyright infringement.
The Japan Society for Rights of Authors, Composers and Publishers, found 29,549 video clips such as television shows, music videos and movies posted on YouTube's site without permission, an official from the group, Fumiyuki Asakura, said Friday.
The San Mateo, California-based company quickly complied with the request to remove the copyright materials, made on behalf of 23 Japanese TV stations and entertainment companies, Asakura said.
Most videos posted on YouTube are homemade, but the site also features scores of copyright material posted by individual users. YouTube's policy is to remove such clips after it receives complaints, though some have suggested the startup eventually could be sued, especially with deep-pocketed Google Inc. about to buy it for $1.65 billion (€1.31 billion) in stock.
Asakura said the entertainment industry group may ask YouTube to introduce a preliminary screening process to prevent copyright clips from being posted.
YouTube has been negotiating with leading copyright holders and reached agreement with several letting the Web site post copyright music videos and other content in exchange for sharing ad revenue.
The company agreed to deploy an audio-signature technology that can spot a low-quality copy of a licensed clip. YouTube would have to substitute an approved version or remove the material automatically.
YouTube has licensing deals with CBS Corp. and three major recording companies — Warner Music Group Corp., Vivendi SA's Universal Music Group and Sony BMG Music Entertainment, which is a joint venture between Sony Corp. and Bertelsmann AG.
Since YouTube started in February 2005, the company has blossomed, now showing more than 100 million video clips per day.
YouTube's worldwide audience was 72.1 million by August, up 2.8 million from a year earlier, according to comScore Media Metrix.

Privacy of YouTube users under threat
By Robert Verkaik, Law Editor
Friday 4 July 2008
The Independent
The personal viewing habits and online identities of millions of YouTube users are to be handed over to an American media giant after a court rejected arguments that such a move amounted to a massive invasion of internet privacy. Under the terms of a US court judgment, Google, which owns YouTube, must now surrender the details of video-watching histories, IP addresses and usernames, to Viacom, which wants to use the data to prove that the site is hosting thousands of television and other media clips in breach of strict copyright laws.
Last night, Google said it intended to comply with the court order and confirmed the ruling would affect ''our global log''. At this stage, the company had no plans to appeal against the ruling, a Google spokesman said....
Continues
You think google will be shown as being pure evil within 2 years? They seem to be genius at mining information & selling it off by making people feel comfortable with a clean, trustworty interface, but they beleive in selling out their users for marketing fodder...
ohshit. i thought they were bound to protest. from what i understood, all viacom wanted to do was prove that pirated material was a cornerstone of the success of youtube, they don't need ip adresses for that
logs out
viacom decided the didn't need usernames, which was nice of them.
anyway, i just noticed i can view user demographics of viewers of videos i uploaded with some feature called 'Insight' it's just gender and age splits, and country of most origin
is this new?
You can't sign into Youtube any more without a Google account. I don't want a fucking Google account.
These ads are getting pretty fucking annoying. As is the Google account thing.
