harriet: world's oldest animal dead

LoadMyRig  said about 5 years ago  or at  4:46PM on Saturday, June 24 2006 in chat

harriet, the 176 yo old tortoise who, until yesterday, resided at CRIKEY australia zoo, has died.

she was collected as a sample from the galapagos islands by charles darwin in 1835.

i met her in january this year. she was a quiet type. kept to herself mostly and had a penchant for hibiscus flowers.

harriet died peacefully in her enclosure on friday june 23, 2006 of heart failure following a short illness.

176... not a bad innings

bumcheeksinthewind  said about 5 years ago:

let's not be sad, let's celebrate her wonderful life in captivity.

hiponion  said about 5 years ago:

RIP HARRIET

it was great to have met you and patted you on the head

unvisible  said about 5 years ago:

It would have been sweet if Darwin had trained her to go around biting christian funamentalists. Really give them something to whine about.

le_disco  said about 5 years ago:

that sucks. i remember meeting her as a wee lad.

muscles  said about 5 years ago:

why did they name her such a daggy name
if i had a turtle i'd call it BLAZE

hiponion  said about 5 years ago:

it was named in 1835

LoadMyRig  said about 5 years ago:

for the first 90 years of her life everyone thought she was male and her name was harry.

then they realised she was female and she became harriet.

goldfoot  said about 5 years ago:

from wiki:

"Though Darwin caught three tortoises and took them home to Britain aboard the HMS Beagle, genetic tests indicate that Harriet belonged to a sub-species endemic to one of the Galápagos Islands that Darwin never visited."

YUM HIBISCUS

Goodbye_beret!  said about 5 years ago:

I can't believe something that could've been captured by Darwin was still with us until yesterday- freaky!

redlips  said about 5 years ago:

how good are turtles?!?!? (and tortoises in this case)

no, seriously- how good are they!

Goodbye_beret!  said about 5 years ago:

I like goldfoot's pic of the kid being fed to her.

goldfoot  said about 5 years ago:

Apparently at one stage she used to roam freely around the Brisbane botanical gardens where kids would ride on her back.

Goodbye_beret!  said about 5 years ago:

That'd be cool! Imagine going out for the night and going for a ride whilst pissed before you went home. Perfect way to end a good night I'd say.

Digital  said about 5 years ago:

Goldfoot just ruined it for me, i thought it would be cool to know an animal that new Darwin anyway.

Goodbye_beret!  said about 5 years ago:

Yeah that would be cool- modi would've stolen it by now though! ;)

LoadMyRig  said about 5 years ago:

that's bullshit.

darwin picked up three tortoises and harriet was one of them.

Digital  said about 5 years ago:

I think i would have rather hung out with Wallace than Darwin anyway, he always seemed a bit pompous for my tastes.

Goodbye_beret!  said about 5 years ago:

I would've rather hung out with Harriet- not to be I guess.

Modi  said about 5 years ago:

Yeah, and he recanted on his deathbed. Wuss.

Goodbye_beret!  said about 5 years ago:

So did Bill Hicks. I thought Darwin was religious anyway?

Hey modi- $50 says Dawkins does a deaths door swithcharoo; you a gambling man? ;)

Modi  said about 5 years ago:

I'll take that bet. He was best mates with Douglas Adams, you know, the world's first radical atheist. I don't think he will throw in his defiance because of a little thing like death. I sure as fuck won't.

unvisible  said about 5 years ago:

I'm pretty sure that neither Darwin nor Bill Hicks recanted on their deathbeds.

Modi  said about 5 years ago:

Yeah, That evangelist woman was a blatant liar. But it was her job, to be fair.

Goodbye_beret!  said about 5 years ago:

Which woman?

Modi  said about 5 years ago:

Lady Hope. The bible basher who spread the story that Darwin had doubts about his theory.

Doesn't actually make any difference, the theory still stands whether or not it's author stands behind it

Goodbye_beret!  said about 5 years ago:

Look up 'Ad hominem' Lady Hope.

LoadMyRig  said about 5 years ago:
