the Grandaddy thread

goingblank  said about 5 years ago  or at  4:34AM on Tuesday, September 26 2006 in music

I'm just listening to Sumday now - it's a beautiful album, particularly OK With My Decay and The Warming Sun. I figured we needed a Grandaddy thread.

blake3030  said about 5 years ago:

We do need it.

But I fear you and I will be the only ones who post on it.

Grandaddy are my favourite band ever.

voidster  said about 5 years ago:

i will join you in this thread

i have the sophtware slump and just like the fambly cat and reckon they are both ace

filterfeed  said about 5 years ago:

i'll post on it. er, they were ace. will regret not going to see them, for sure. like the second album the best.

blake3030  said about 5 years ago:

You need more!!

Under the Western Freeway and The Broken Down Comforter Collection! Sumday too.

blake3030  said about 5 years ago:

I just got Nature Anthem on green vinyl. Very pleased with that.

filterfeed  said about 5 years ago:

i think i heard it once or twice and threatened to smash my radio, blake. if it's the song i'm thinking of.

blake3030  said about 5 years ago:

Yeah, it'd be that one. Fun!

filterfeed  said about 5 years ago:

oh, so that's why i don't like it.

right.

runoutgroove  said about 5 years ago:

passed by one of those discount CD stalls at the local shopping centre today. they had sophtware slump, sumday & under the western freeway all for $5 each. made me a little sad actually.

hiponion  said about 5 years ago:

5 dollars each? GOLD!

Benji  said about 5 years ago:

I'm in on this mofo too!

Saddest Vacant lot in all the world has one of my favourite lyrics:

"He's so drunk he's
Passed out in a Datsun
That's parked out in the hot sun
In the saddest vacant lot in all the world"

One day I hope to rhyme something with datsun.

hiponion  said about 5 years ago:

that isn't 'hot sun'

runoutgroove  said about 5 years ago:

yeah, if i wasn't broke I'd have bought up a few copies of TSS just to give to friends.

hiponion  said about 5 years ago:

that 'excerpts from the diary of todd zilla' EP is quite good too

Benji  said about 5 years ago:

Its not 'hot sun'??? what is it??

blake3030  said about 5 years ago:

It is hot sun.

jonty  said about 5 years ago:

I try to sing it funny like Beck, it's bringing me dooooooooooown.

Fav G-Daddy lyric ever. I need to give Fambly another spin, out of respect.

Has anyone mentioned Earlimart yet? So good. G-Daddy sideproject but I guess main meal now (not that it's the main dude but Tremor & Tremble is the bomb).

PumpUpTheHam  said about 5 years ago:

their show at the corner a few years ago was amazing. It might've been the acid, but I had a good time nonetheless. sophtware slump is great, that song about the robot man and all that... go synth rock!

Jim Fairchild was just a stand in guitarist for a while. I don't think any grandaddy members had any input into that band aside from that. Well Jason Lytle produced. They have some good songs.

Jim has a new solo project called All Smiles. Check out his MySpace.

I went to both Corner shows. Both fucking awesome.

Jason Lytle's coming out here in early Feb for a small tour and some house shows.

:)

lekkas  said about 6 months ago:

Awesome, where are the dates??

blake3030  said about 6 months ago:

None yet. He just mentioned on his forum that it's definitely happening. I assume there'll be more details to follow.

Every few days, sometimes weeks I put on ''He's Simple, He's Dumb, He's the Pilot'' for it's first 3 minutes. Not to take away from the rest of the song or album but that first 3 minutes is colossal especially with some good circumaural headphones. That descending synth before what I guess is the chorus...

mrb  said about 6 months ago:

awesome. I gotta see this.

blake3030  said about 6 months ago:

Hmm, it's not on the Toff website anymore.

Just had my ticket refunded for the toff show via email with no explanation given. Pretty annoying.

Ralph Malph  said about 5 months ago:

Which night did you purchase for as they originally posted two dates, and the Toff site says only one. Or is it cancelled all together?

blake3030  said about 5 months ago:

I think I may have purchased for the second. Will repurchase for the first one now.

Be nice if they told you what was going on though!

Timey  said about 5 months ago:

i saw them at the corner and i thought it was a bit ''meh'' , but it was probably more me than them. not in the right head space at the time i think. i have been listenning to them a lot recently and had no idea they were touring or even still playing! will purchase a ticket for the toff show asap

Timey  said about 5 months ago:

oh, i see. just jason. still should be worthwhile attending

blake3030  said about 2 months ago:

Jason was great tonight. Really enjoyed the setlist and the way he played the songs. Always liked Grandaddy as much for their production and sonics as I did for their songs, but he did all of the songs justice in solo mode.

Setlist was something like:

El Caminos in the west
The go in go for it
?? (something I recognised, but can't remember the name of)
Chartsengrafs
Sarah 5646766
Birds encouraged him
I am lost
What can't be erased
New song that is probably called Willow Wand
The Crystal Lake
Stray dog and the chocolate shake
Jed's other poem
Hewlett's Daughter
Now it's on

Ralph Malph  said about 2 months ago:

I enjoyed the stripped back nature of last night’s gig. Hearing organic versions shone a spotlight more on great songwriting and showed a more vulnerable performer which enhanced the intimacy of the show. Jason mentioned to me he suffers from extreme nerves before any performance. No real dickheads in the crowd (which is expected with these kinds of performances. ”Play …..”) but a respectful audience helped.
Got the Aussie Tour CD which I cannot wait to hear the Aussie Slang banter. Might be funny seeing he inscribed mine “You can start laughing now”. BTW He really enjoyed last night himself.

goingblank  said about 2 months ago:

Looks like Jason's on a roll:

''California indie rock band Grandaddy, who broke up in 2005, will reunite for a string of shows this year. They have confirmed a headling slot at Dorset, England's End of the Road Festival. They perform on the last day of the festival, taking place August 31-September 2 at the Larmer Tree Gardens. It will be the band's only UK festival performance.''
